Re:Red Flags in Software Developer Job Descriptions on Tuesday March 05, 2019 @01:14PM (#19312684)
This is a very good question, saying this as some one who just took a job with a high churn rate
Re:A Book about Qt5 on Monday March 04, 2019 @12:26PM (#19303028)
I really like QML but the licensing is kinda tough for hobbyists if you wanna do stuff outside of their opensource license. They used to have a cheaper license
lol simple vehicle? maybe a lada niva (not sold in the US I think?) nothing fancy but easy to fix
All you young wild devs, you'll be the death of me, the death of me
Would be really nice, id has been cool about this (at least while Carmack was around). Epic MegaGames could do a gpl UT99 release, lol specially since fortnite is making bank for them right now. Doesn't seem like a big loss
Re:How the Dreamcast Copy Protection Was Defeated on Tuesday December 11, 2018 @10:27PM (#18661143)
This

The Dreamcast sold well at release and some time after (in North America at least), however Sega's financial situation was bad they didn't have loads of cash like Sony or probably even Nintendo at the time. The system was selling well but not well enough for Sega to recoup it's financials. Also EA boycotted the system completely and was not publishing games for it. Add to that the hype of the PS2.

Just a perfect storm for Sega, even though they really made good console correcting a lot of their earlier mistakes.

From Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dreamcast

Moore stated that the Dreamcast would need to sell 5 million units in the U.S. by the end of 2000 in order to remain a viable platform, but Sega ultimately fell short of this goal with some 3 million units sold.

-----------------------------------------------------------

The Gamecube sold about 3.8 million first year and the PS2 9Million something first year

Re:Ask HN: Do you still prefer apt packages over Snaps? on Tuesday April 24, 2018 @11:49PM (#16918508)
Recently tried installing a snap package on ubuntu for the first time. Because of the sandbox environment in snap packages I had some trouble giving it access to mounted NAS drive. Ended up just going with the apt version of the same program
Re:Qt for WebAssembly Technology Preview on Monday April 23, 2018 @10:32PM (#16909430)
Having used QML in the past, its made the most sense to me out of all the UI/Animation setups I have ever used. This sounds amazing
Re:Electron 2.0.0 beta on Saturday February 24, 2018 @01:51PM (#16454640)
Look up QML (Qt Quick) on Qt, its the easiest UI building experience I've ever had

Funny that QML looks alot like the JavaFX script that was abandoned

Re:Silicon Valley's housing crisis, in one sentence on Friday June 10, 2016 @01:53PM (#11878374)
I live in NJ and the property taxes here are among the highest in the nation. My parents house is currently at 8k per year and that is considered "good".

Even in neighborhoods with shit schools taxes are ludicrous, an acquaintance of my family is paying 14k taxes for a small single family home in a town with a high school ranked 294 out of about 400 in the state. She wants to sell the house but due to high taxes and shit school buyers are hard to find.

Property taxes almost doubled in the past 10 years in my area, I am not looking forward to buying a house and then the property taxes doubling in another 10 years.

Proposition 13 sounds great to someone from New Jersey.

Love stuff like this, very cool, I see their also working on a "external HDMI scandoubler" for amiga. Might as remake a whole amiga and sell it patents probably expired, someone did this for the Amiga500 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Minimig although with an FPGA.
Re:The End of College Tuition Pricing as We Know It? on Thursday October 01, 2015 @02:04PM (#10313178)

Re:Games That Teach Programming: A Brief Overview on Saturday September 07, 2013 @05:58PM (#6346789)
Man I remember RunUO, it was crazy having the ability to run your own "shard" or server
Re:GameBoy Programming Manual on Monday July 29, 2013 @12:06PM (#6121959)
I think this document nowadays is more catered to embedded or micro-controller programmers. When the document was released it was common to get close to the hardware and probably most people had some experience/exposure nowadays not so much
" I didn't study CS, and if I didn't care at all about mundane concerns like "career prospects", I'd have studied history." Same here.
Re:Writing the Fastest Code, by Hand, for Fun (2005) on Friday May 11, 2012 @01:17PM (#3960240)
Old article but amazing stuff. I'm assuming everything of his is written in assembly
Re:Ask HN: Who Is Hiring? (May 2012) on Tuesday May 01, 2012 @04:03PM (#3916149)
hey fishpi, I think there might be a problem with your website. When I click software engineer I got the hardware engineer description, and when I clicked hardware engineer I got the Technical Solutions Engineer description. I tried this with IE9 and Opera Version 11.62 on Windows 7 and both yielded same result
Re:Ask HN: How to teach my young children to program? on Monday April 30, 2012 @12:43PM (#3910004)
A raspberry pi with the appropriate programs installed might be a good choice. Its what I plan on giving my nephew when its more avialable.
Re:The Dawn of Haiku OS on Sunday April 29, 2012 @09:59PM (#3907727)

Re:Incredibox - Background music for programming. on Saturday April 28, 2012 @12:02AM (#3901988)

Re:Google Code Jam 2012 on Saturday April 14, 2012 @02:56PM (#3841674)
Never seen it, its crazy though. So far around 17 thousand people are participating and less than one thousand have submitted an answer to that problem!
Re:Google Code Jam 2012 on Saturday April 14, 2012 @02:54PM (#3841671)
To every one who is participating, what language(or languages) are you using? Java here
Re:Bashar Assad emails leaked by Anonymous on Tuesday February 07, 2012 @10:07PM (#3564858)

Re:Ask HN: Quitting Job, need some outside opinions on Monday January 23, 2012 @07:27PM (#3502852)
Spoke to manager today, basically they really want me to stay since I'm the only one doing it and there is no documentation. They even said they'll move me to what ever project I want, if I just train a new guy for the role. I told them tomorrow when I come in I'll decide.
Re:Ask HN: Quitting Job, need some outside opinions on Monday January 23, 2012 @10:10AM (#3500571)
"No debt is great, but cashflow is king.", Very true, its the very reason I've been holding on so long.
Re:Ask HN: Quitting Job, need some outside opinions on Monday January 23, 2012 @09:41AM (#3500477)
That's the problem, I'm the only one supporting/coding this excel thing. Guy who was in my position before me quit the company and person who made these sheets is no longer on the project (Plus there is no documentation!). So while Im here I will be doing only VBA/support until the project ends
Re:Ask HN: Quitting Job, need some outside opinions on Monday January 23, 2012 @09:19AM (#3500408)
As in another job? No. But something to work on yes, I also went to a couple of interviews in the first week of Jan (had to take PTO days to go to some of these interviews)
Re:Ask HN: Quitting Job, need some outside opinions on Monday January 23, 2012 @07:16AM (#3500083)
Also, this is not my first job. I worked in IT for a metal company for almost 3 years before graduation also did math tutoring at a county college for 2 semesters and before that did 3 years customer service.
Re:Ask HN: Quitting Job, need some outside opinions on Monday January 23, 2012 @07:08AM (#3500072)
