Re:Moot's Canvas now public. on Tuesday September 06, 2011 @10:53PM (#2968144)
removing barriers to entry might make it easier to innovate but it also makes it easy to copycat and beat ideas to death. the first rage comic might have been funny but they just get worse and worse with each new iteration.

they tried to pass reform, but the office in charge of it keeps getting its funding blocked by congress.
Re:Linux is now hosted on GitHub on Monday September 05, 2011 @02:47AM (#2961424)
in this case, saying "there's a chance" is the same as saying it's impossible to prove either which way.
you care way too much about what other people think
Re:Which one is more likely to succeed: clojure or arc? on Monday August 22, 2011 @10:44AM (#2912603)
java is the most used language right now and using the jvm gets you access to all of that infrastructure. it also makes it really easy to port code to linux, macs, windows, phones, tablets, etc. practicality is one of the stated goals of clojure and the jvm adds a lot of it. aside from the lack of tail-call recursion, it doesn't really bring any real downsides.

on topic: theres no reason that only one can succeed. it's like asking whether linux will beat windows or whether hamburgers will beat hot dogs. they both bring different things to the table and target different people. scala has more common territory and thus more at stake with clojure than arc does. the only thread of commonality between arc and clojure is that they are both lisps and that is hardly the most important thing about either of them.

Re:Functional Programming Is Hard, That's Why It's Good on Sunday August 21, 2011 @07:51AM (#2909020)
the little schemer series was very good. you can safely skip the first 5 chapters if you're comfortable with recursion. learn scheme in fixnum days is good too for learning the language right away.

what programs do you use to do things that emacs cant?
everyone should just become a computer scientist. problem solved

" a .torrent file pointing to thousands of scientific papers has just been uploaded to the pirate bay" doesnt really fit into a headline
Re:Why I will never pursue cheating again on Monday July 18, 2011 @07:43PM (#2778905)
not really. people who do the work are usually pressured to share it, and are ostracized if they don't. I don't really think its fair to punish a victim unless there's some kind of evidence that they played a more insidious role.
Re:Nearly Half of All College Grades Are A's on Saturday July 16, 2011 @02:16PM (#2771292)
I wish it was at least a little more standardized across schools and majors. A little variance is fine but i went to a school where evreryone, not just me, had to study into the night to maintain barely passing grades in any technical subject while kids at other schools and "easier" majors maintained 3.5+ without cracking open a book.
Re:You Weren't Meant to Have a Boss on Thursday July 14, 2011 @02:40AM (#2762006)
didn't the prehistoric groups of our ancestors probably have some kind of leader or hierarchy?
Re:I Did What I Loved and Nearly Destroyed Myself on Sunday July 10, 2011 @08:27PM (#2749016)
This is a pretty terrible argument for a guy whose main passion in life is philosophy.
Re:I Did What I Loved and Nearly Destroyed Myself on Sunday July 10, 2011 @08:23PM (#2749004)
I'm pretty sure it applies more to some jobs then others. I know you're being facetious but the main difference between prostitution and sex is that sex is generally with people you want to have sex with and prostitution is not. The difference isn't just that you're doing it for money so it suddenly becomes boring, although that can probably happen with some jobs.
i use mplayer with smplayer and it is amazing. I couldn't watch high res HD on any of my computers with VLC and now i can run it on my old, shitty netbook. I've also heard good things about potplayer but i've never used.

happened for me since 4. i had to switch to chrome on my netbook :*(
Re:How to improve your programming skills on Thursday June 30, 2011 @01:59PM (#2715058)
i always hear about how many jobs there are for cobol programmers to maintain legacy code. i've never actually met any though. maybe they all commit suicide.
Re:Sal Khan has started videos about Python on Thursday June 30, 2011 @01:58AM (#2712830)
exactly. if the viewers of these videos intend to become serious software developers then they can just correct whatever wrong shit they learn. if they don't care about best practices then it is still better that they know how to do the basics to automate mundane tasks then not know any at all.
Is this the one where he talks about how his experience at intel was analogous to steve wozniak's experience at hp? The idea that there were people just as smart and determined as them but weren't able to do anything interesting because of the environment really amazes me. reminds me of the talk richard feynman gave about the myth of some special talent or miracle that allows scientists to understand quantum mechanics. fuck, i need to get back to work
Re:Why Nerds Succeed‎ on Sunday June 26, 2011 @12:05AM (#2697342)
why would anyone want to do that?

you are light years ahead of everybody else. you could fall asleep for 5 years and you'd still be ahead.
Re:All these Brilliant People at Facebook Make Me Sad on Sunday June 12, 2011 @05:55PM (#2647506)
i turned down my friends' startup offer to go work in finance. 3 years later, they are multi-millionaires and i am not. that doesn't really bother me though. what bothers me is that they are happy and doing exciting work and i am not.
that doesn't seem to be a very good criticism at all. he completely misses Lustig's point, skews the argument and tries to obfuscate his own lack of expertise with buzzwords and shallow analysis.
