Yep, like technicians. Especially technicians that work on, well, everything. Every industrial machine, robot, PLC, industrial vehicle, mining equipment, power plant, etc etc.

We really don’t.

And shouldn’t.

Re:US boy names that became girl names and vice versa on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:46PM (#50342598)
Why would anyone make their kids legal name include “Junior”.

How does that work when they’re 60 with grandkids?

Re:US boy names that became girl names and vice versa on Monday November 02, 2026 @02:42PM (#50342531)
> the same pattern held in the opposite direction.

That seems like a really awkward way to describe the observation.

Wouldn’t the “same” pattern be if the increase was due to greater uptake in the opposite sex.

Re:Ask HN: Which TV do you recommend for privacy? on Sunday November 01, 2026 @07:36PM (#50331551)
The last TV I bought was a Kogan, and at first power up, or after a factory reset, it let you select where you wanted it to be a dumb screen with inputs only, or run the Google TV OS.

Did the TCL not have this option?

Re:Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament on Saturday October 31, 2026 @03:31PM (#50319276)
At this stage, one would have to be intentionally ignorant of the history of academia and its current trajectory to believe that, or lying.

Rural farmers are responsible for whatever the fuck this is supposed to be:

Course name at Melbourne University:

Global Intersections: Gender, Race, Class - What is the relationship between gender, globalisation and identity?

Queering Europe -investigates the social and linguistic contexts, cultural production, and representation of LGBTIQA+ communities in Europe.

Gender, Care and Everyday - How do we care for ourselves, others and our environment? What are the dynamics of gender, race, sexuality, class, ability, and citizenship in relation to care?

Have you bothered to look at the literature the whack jobs who take these courses put out?

This redacted is paid for, supported by, and student loans granted by our governments here in Australia.

The worst marriage of government and academia modern democratic society has seen.

This is probably a much better way of putting it than mine.

However, scorn and ridicule are also reasonable at times. And it started a conversation.

Re:Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament on Saturday October 31, 2026 @03:17PM (#50319154)
Seems entirely congruent.

The first sentence seems to suggest: you are naive.

The second sentence indicates the writer believes many academics are naive.

Where is this contracts you allude to?

Re:Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament on Saturday October 31, 2026 @03:08PM (#50319078)
Yes, this was, obviously, my intended usage.

Not the wet lettuce straw man usage posited by the other comment.

Yes, very STEM oriented indeed.

Re:Serbia just elected the world's brainiest parliament on Saturday October 31, 2026 @07:48AM (#50315176)
Maybe for the first two weeks.

And then there’ll be the inevitable “I have to work with that person for how long!?” And the fiefdoms will be set up, and the back stabbing will begin.

That’s before we even consider the effect of the unelected bureaucracy and the power of the lobby groups and foreign interests.

Diverse? Over-educated university graduates is possibly the least diverse set of thinkers one could hope to find.

Lord help up. This is going to be demonstration of hubris and an exercise in arrogance.

If it doesn’t act to fix the politically Left biased perennial sources list, it will continue to be a propaganda machine.

Peripherals not included.

Dial #lever and say “cut off”.

Lots of ‘phones’ have a camera wart on the back. Why not several other warts for additional functionality.

So long as it does effect the perceived thinness at the edges, I suppose.

> The manufacturing process for engineered quartz is now being interwoven with silicosis through the legal system, leading to manufacturers marketing “low silica” quartz at a cost premium. This premium is closing the cost gap with porcelain. This is the main economic and legal reason as jurisdictions- Australia and maybe soon California look to ban these products forcing the market towards natural stones.

This is wrong, and the response to it was misguided.

The problem never was the manufacturing process, as manufacturers, especially in Australia, are well aware of occupational hazard.

The problem was people cutting engineer stone dry and without respiratory protection. You can’t really dry cut anything that vaporises or aerosolises without creating some kind of hazard. There was one 26 year old guy here in Australia who’d been cutting engineered stone on site, dry, with no or insufficient respiratory protection, and was expected to check out before turning 30.

The response, banning the products is misguided, because natural stones present approximately the exact same risks. Namely, you can aerosolise any stone and deliberately hoof the particles and expect good outcomes.

The correct response was to ensure the people working with the product follow the correct safety protocols.

But this being Australia, next time something like this happens, Anika Wells will just ban us from talking about it, if the toxic Labor-Greens federal government get their way.

The two most important fundamentals are agreements (contracts) and the ability to enforce them (that is, to seek redress) - as in: law enforcement.

A high trust society. Everything else is downstream of that.

Enough with your facts and data.

Obviously my feelings about things I know little about, games I have no skin in, are important.

If you say anything to the contrary the group-think will downvote you.

Shut up bigot.

It’s just government intervention in business it knows little, and can only know little, about.

Only a few years earlier none of that existed. Then it did, proved highly successful, then government, which knows not what it is doing, nor can it, comes along and gets involved in something it had no interest in, and contributed little to nothing to.
