i'd not heard of Slowly; googled, etc.

how sort of perversely lovely (i say it in an admiring manner), to meet in a gloriously old-fashioned manner on such a modern platform!

love it.

Re:Show HN: I've built a nice home server OS on Friday April 24, 2026 @08:03PM (#47897293)
if this is Cloud Run for my home lab, i am SO in.

first read looks good, excited to try.

powershell:

Stop-Process -Id (Get-NetTCPConnection -LocalPort 1234).OwningProcess -Force

wow, i had no idea at all there was a Microcenter in Socal! not too far, i'll be visiting, thank you. i went to a Microcenter in Dallas decades ago and was blown away.
i would love to know more about this.

i live in the largest city on the west coast of the USA and the only stores i've found where i can press keyboards is Office Depot and the like, and at least in the stores that i have visited, they have not had mechanicals.

even when Frys was around, i don't remember them having keyboards out and about.

is it just me or was the scrollbar purposefully hidden on this site? in chrome on windows, i found it very jarring and user-hostile to NOT know how far along i was in reading the article.

i make a judgement call early on: is this worth my time? my whole article calculation algo was thrown off by this.

do not like.

hi, this is why Solvang[0] exists.

this is exactly the same as people who drive their car into a river because google maps told them to.
Re:Dave Farber has died on Sunday February 08, 2026 @08:43AM (#46934125)
Dave's Interesting People email list was a TRUE highlight of the early Internet.
i have been recently quite enamoured with using both the ChatGPT mobile app (specifically the Codex part) and the Github mobile app, along with Codex. with an appropriate workflow, i've been able to deploy features to some [simple] customer-facing apps while on the go. it's very liberating!

GP's setup sounds like the logical extension to what i'm doing. not just code, but sessions within servers? are sysadmins letting openclawd out and about on their boxes these days?

Re:Time Station Emulator on Tuesday January 27, 2026 @11:33PM (#46791095)
thank you for this reply! i've got 6x CASIO watches and have struggled to the time on them synced for over a decade. a quick [small] purchase later and every single one of my CASIOs are synced. i'm so happy. its the little things that matter. thanks again.
25th year anniversary of hotornot.com[1] coming up!

this is great, and right up my alley. i built a customer support chatbot using a google sheet for our CS folks to input & structure their question/answer pairs. that is auto xformed into markdown and fed into the bot for context. it works fairly well considering how simple it was to do. i'm really intrigued as to what promptrepo can add to that. will definitely give it some R&D time!

shoutout fellow Mackem! not often spotted on HN!

you're right -- there SHOULD be!

where i come from in the north east of England, a "divvy" is a "stupid person", a "moron" etc.
Re:Printf debugging is ok on Sunday January 05, 2025 @11:04PM (#42607558)
totally agree re: structured logging. my intro to that was w/GCP Logging and it changed my mind on when and what to log. proper structured logging and keying metrics/alerts from those metrics is extremely satisfying and legitimately useful.
Re:The GPU, not the TPM, is the root of hardware DRM on Thursday January 02, 2025 @12:31AM (#42571947)
> Sure, let's say that's true. The obvious implication is that these users actually don't care about whether they're running Windows 11 or not, and thus the Windows 11 TPM requirement is utterly irrelevant in their decision to buy a new computer. > I don't see how this supports the theory that this is all about revenue from Windows OEM licenses from forced hardware upgrades.

what on earth makes you think that "what the users actually don't [or do care about]" has any affect on what corporate IT does with their users' devices?

do you think corporate IT is going to say "oh ok" when a user says "i don't want to upgrade to Windows 11 or a laptop that has TPM"

c'mon. lol.

i bought a Tello eSIM to use for my Rabbit R1, am in USA, was not required to provide any KYC, received a (213) LA area code number, recommend Tello so far.

re: EU central registry of assets, here is a Bloomberg Law piece from July 2024, detailing the chairman of the EU parliament's tax subcommittee's desire to get a "European registry of assets". it seems fairly straight forward.

i'm afraid ChatGPT was wrong about the asset registry. the EU parliament's tax subcommittee most definitely does want such a registry.

here [1] is a feasibility study released by the EU in 2024 re: "Feasibility study for a European asset registry in the context of the fight against money laundering and tax evasion".

i've used GCP GPU Cloud Run to build an on-demand/auto scaling livestream/HLS video translation --> subtitle generation pipeline with great success.

[edit: sorry, not inference, but a great cost-saver]

sounds (at least at a high level) similar to EXO[1]

Re:AI Powered Web Terminal on Tuesday December 24, 2024 @07:22PM (#42505962)
this is neat! possible to run commands without AI interception using \ prefix, like in bash how you can run OG commands not aliases, etc?

me: ls ai: run command ls? y/n

me: \ls <list of files>

neat! thank you for the 2 options!
Re:1-800-ChatGPT on Wednesday December 18, 2024 @10:59PM (#42458299)
the voices are even able to speed up their own delivery on command! it's great
Re:1-800-ChatGPT on Wednesday December 18, 2024 @10:56PM (#42458288)
that does bring a really good point! would it be allowed (that is assuming the show knew it was not a real human)?
Re:Show HN: I made the slowest, most expensive GPT on Friday December 13, 2024 @06:24PM (#42413288)
already mentioned in another comment by me but this would/could be a primo use-case of Cloudflare AI gateway. i'm not related/affiliated with them at all, just a user/dev with very little traffic thinking it might help someone with a lot of it
