Which parts of their actions should be protected by law? They stopped doing their job, interrupted the work of others, and were in parts of the building that they did not leave when asked. These would normally be completely normal to treat with disciplinary actions and in the last case, they are trespassing.

Just adding in the 'but they were protesting something' doesn't change this by default. And even in Europe (where I'm from and still live) their actions would not be protected. They wouldn't get fired, but they would face some repercussions until they protest in a manner compatible with the law.

I cannot simply say "I'm not going to do any work, because I don't like that my company makes software used by the Metropolitan Police" and expect my company to say "fine by us, we'll keep paying you".

Sounds like a meta Turing test... after conversing with an AI, how would you describe their personality and mental state?

Presumably we want to tune somewhere between "unimpeded ADHD monologue" and "crazy guy on the tube", leaning closer to "trusted family Doctor you've known for 20 years" over "sleazy politician".

But I suspect it's more likely that you're pattern-seeking than we've uncovered some deep truth about the human condition. GPTs are, after all, simply automata good at sounding good. They are NOT actual simulacra of human brains.

Re:Rich text editors and rendering engines on Wednesday July 05, 2023 @11:12AM (#36601531)
I work on a project at a large (although not Google-scale) company building a collaborative RTE.

The short is answer is no, there are very few universal truths about how text editing works. You'll experience differences between combinations of operating systems, input modes (Japanese IME for example), software keyboards on Android, languages (RTL languages) and that's just for text itself.

Then when you are thinking about more complex features simple things like "what happens when I double or triple click on this" are a complete crapshoot.

Keeping the metaphor, it's responding to the question of "Do you know Joe?" with "Yes, and that guy Bob over there says Joe is a pedophile" whenever asked.
This is a completely circular argument which also happens to completely miss the point.

1. They want to show personalized adverts

2. So they collect and process the data to do so

3. And therefore because they've collected the data, they must be allowed to show personalized adverts.

Aside from it being complete nonsense, the contention is around the 2nd point. They should NOT be allowed to collect and process the data for that purpose without permission, which EU courts have repeatedly stated.

Re:Web fingerprinting is worse than I thought on Tuesday March 21, 2023 @05:54AM (#35244267)
Chrome does give access to localStorage/sessionStorage in Incognito and this can be used to communicate between tabs on the same domain, but just like cookies and cache this data is wiped if you close the Incognito instance.

It's certainly a mystery, because you'd expect any capability fingerprinting (some combo of UA, extensions, CPU/GPU specs, IP etc) to give an identical result between profiles, so it does seem there's some per-profile difference. But I can't think of any browser API that exposes something like an ID...

The CSS for HN is very terse, and aside from a mobile-specific set of rules it doesn't really do any variation.

Is it possible you had set the zoom level previously, which the browser remembers between sessions, and turning off the tracking reset the zoom to 100%? Do you have any extensions like Greasemonkey or Stylus for per-site customisation?

Re:How to hire engineering talent without the BS on Monday March 06, 2023 @04:56AM (#35039242)
I can imagine that works fine for fresh-out-of-university candidates but I can't imagine a time in my career where I could (and would want to) take 5 days PTO for a job interview.

FAANG-like hiring has the question "What info do you get from the 5th interview that you didn't already have after the 2nd?" - for the paid trial, what info do you get by Friday that you didn't have by the end of Monday?

Re:Ongoing Incident in Google Cloud on Monday February 27, 2023 @12:48PM (#34959528)
Often "impossible" is based on constraints like "0 downtime" "100% planned rollout, rollback scenarios" etc.

These constraints get thrown to the wind when the downtime is already happening.

Microbes are actually around 1 micrometer!

Whilst I'd generally hate for a 1 meter bee to exist, it might be worth it just for the nerd joke.

So purely factually, a microbe is only 1/10000th of a bee

Looks like another round of W3C bike-shedding an existing easy-to-use and well-understood community standard until it's godawful to work with and half as useful.

Gotta love standards bodies!

Standard Darwinian competition wouldn't matter here - people generally finish breeding (ages <35) long before they have trouble from cholesterol (ages 40+) or other minor dietary issues.

You could consider in the same way as the explanation for altruism - that families and communities who can rely on helpful old people to raise the children perform better and out-compete families/communities without that resource.

We should also consider that any dietary pressure will have only existed for at most a few thousands of years which, in evolutionary terms, 1000 generations perhaps, is basically nothing.

Re:Ask HN: What game do you wish existed? on Wednesday May 25, 2022 @11:16AM (#31505758)
That first one made me think of combining Pokemon with Slay The Spire - each Pokemon has a deck (themed towards poison, electric, etc), and the Player has a deck (utility, healing, battlefield modification, combos)

In battle, you can choose your Pokemon based on the opponent and your hand is a mix of Player and Pokemon cards.

You gain more Pokemon, or cards for Pokemon, by exploring the wilds.

You gain Player cards and gold by battling other trainers.

I guess for a proper modern Rougelite you should have "relics", gained by battling Gym leaders, rare Pokemon, or completing quests by NPCs.

I think the electronic maps were limited more by technology than vision.

Google Maps (any many map systems even today) used pre-rendered tiled images, which means you could only zoom at the levels which were rendered and rotating the grid was hard (especially on old hardware)

This seems like the most obvious candidate for Occam's Razor, although stranger things have happened.

Part of me wonders if it's easier to 'invent' a comet strike or otherwise imply divine intervention as a way of avoiding blame for putting a gunpowder factory in the middle of a city.

The alternative (as in, current reality) is "Whoops. I hit ctrl+entry while copying my secret and no-one noticed for a month. Guess all our data is leaked now!"

It's also up to each provider what actually happens when the "revoke" action is triggered. Maybe they just warn you immediately, which is still better than nothing.

Plus the energy to melt the ice, 0.016kg * 334kJ/kg = 5334J = 1274 cal.

A grand total of 1.8kcal per ice cube. Only 1000 ice cubes and you could eat twice as much as usual!

At around 16 liters of water once melted that would be an interesting Darwin Award for sure.

Re:Ask HN: How did an adult ADHD diagnosis help you? on Tuesday June 15, 2021 @09:04AM (#27514757)
The grieving process was intense for the first few months. It was somewhat amazing to notice the "stages" as they happened. Anger, towards my parents and my teachers and my psychiatrist, was the hardest to deal with.

But acceptance came, and it's the best I've felt in years.

Glad to see others in this thread like yourself with such similar experiences.

Re:Ask HN: How did an adult ADHD diagnosis help you? on Tuesday June 15, 2021 @09:01AM (#27514731)
I was diagnosed with ADHD 7 months ago. The diagnosis and medication have been life-changing.

I was 'high-functioning', in much the same way as OP: stable marriage, successful career, not much savings but at least not in any debt.

But I also suffered from depression, anxiety, extreme procrastination, substance abuse, risky and impulsive behaviour.

Of course I saw psychiatrists, and they stopped listening the moment I said "depression" and prescribed the usual drugs, which did nothing for me. Luckily my 3rd psychiatrist listened a bit better and referred me for tests.

Since diagnosis I have started medication (methylphenidate/Ritalin, the only real option in the country I live in) my life has significantly improved. My procrastination is almost entirely gone (now maybe 4 hours a week "wasted" instead of 3+ days of being unable to do anything productive), my work performance is drastically improved, I'm losing weight (no longer dopamine-hunting with food), my wife says I'm doing more 'chores' and forgetting little things (spoon in the sink instead of the dishwasher) less often.

My depression and anxiety have disappeared. I still get overwhelmed in loud/busy environments. I still have emotional overreactions to small annoyances. I still forget things, and procrastinate a little. But the key thing is acceptance. I understand why these things are happening now, and that understanding makes them less hard to do live with.

Even if you don't start medication (and I suggest you do, it's provably incredibly effective for most cases) the biggest thing you can do is learn. You will be amazed for the first 6 months at least that such a massive amount of your life has truly been affected and so much of your 'unique personality' is shared with other ADHD adults.

My psychiatrist answered my same question "How can I have ADHD if my life is like this?" with "But how hard was it?". Success despite ADHD doesn't mean it doesn't exist. It just means you developed coping strategies for your deficiencies. And if you're in therapy for family issues then clearly those strategies are not working sufficiently.

Re:Ask HN: How did an adult ADHD diagnosis help you? on Tuesday June 15, 2021 @08:48AM (#27514525)
That sounds like a very unhelpful response. People with ADHD are known to suffer much higher rates of divorce, because ADHD is largely emotional dis-regulation.

ADHD is often ignored in 'high-functioning' adults who present with anxiety, depression, and relationship issues but it is often the root-cause of these problems.

If a therapist suggest at least exploring ADHD then assume they have very good reason to do so!
