News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

We've just incorporated our Stackoverflow app into you.com/chat Would love to get your feedback.
Few details but sounds a little like what we've just launched at you.com?
Re:Kagi – Paid Search Engine on Friday December 30, 2022 @08:43PM (#34192507)
Thanks. We'll look into both of these (plans and design).
Re:Kagi – Paid Search Engine on Friday December 30, 2022 @04:26AM (#34183425)
If there's a lot of interest, we'd be happy to offer a monthly paid plan also. It's interesting. Only on HN do we hear users asking to pay for an otherwise free service. Majority of our users everywhere else would never pay for search.

youChat will get a lot better in the coming months

I think it would be wonderful!

Sorry, the model is not yet self-aware nor aware of you.com - We will feed it better information about ourselves soon.

For now, you can read about all the answers on of FAQ site: https://about.you.com/ - which will soon get a design overhaul also... The joys of a startup.

Great idea! We'll look into that.
Re:A new chat feature has been released by You Search on Friday December 23, 2022 @08:35PM (#34112884)
Yea, anybody can build a breakthrough app for you.com to show in the SERP: https://you.com/developers

We hope to grow this new kind of search engine/portal together with the community and then incorporate chat+apps+links into a new kind of experience.

Re:A new chat feature has been released by You Search on Friday December 23, 2022 @08:32PM (#34112865)
Hey,

Yea. These are valid concerns. We care a lot about privacy and are making public statements and commitments to it.

Technically any privacy-focused business (proton, ddg, etc) could pivot and change their mind but the hope is that by starting with those commitments potential future shareholders would understand that the erosion of trust would hurt the brand and not push for it?

Re:A new chat feature has been released by You Search on Friday December 23, 2022 @07:25PM (#34112371)
Richard from you.com here.

We want to stay free and open to everyone so we will explore private ads (not user dependent, only based on query, not tracking, similar to DDG) and useful monetized apps like youWrite or youImagine (ie stable diffusion).

If there's enough interest, we can also open up a paid account without ads.

Re:A new chat feature has been released by You Search on Friday December 23, 2022 @07:13PM (#34112286)
Do you have ideas for how we can make the citations more likely to be used?

It does seem like the biggest failure cases of chat are happening when we have not yet incorporated one of our apps (like weather or directions).

Richard from YOU here.

Happy to answer questions that folks have here. (founder here)
Re:Google, please do something with your ads and SEO-spam on Tuesday November 29, 2022 @03:31PM (#33792856)
you.com CEO here. We let people give feedback on which major content blocks they want to see and soon will let developers add their own search-apps also. We believe in an open platform you can control, for the future of search.
Re:Ask HN: What search engines are you using? on Tuesday November 29, 2022 @03:00PM (#33792461)
you.com CEO here.

We are seeing a lot of growth and retention with developers on https://you.com/code You can vote on which search-apps you like and soon block or pin them completely. You will also be able to submit your own search-apps soon. We believe in an open platform for search.

Re:Stadia died because no one trusts Google on Tuesday October 04, 2022 @02:16AM (#33077133)
We're growing a lot at you.com
Re:Debian's Chromium changes default search engine to DDG on Thursday August 25, 2022 @02:47AM (#32590422)
I'm gonna throw you.com (i'm a co-founder) into that mix. We've been growing a lot and have a private mode that stores nothing at all.

What audit would you suggest for us to prove that statement? It would be great to have a some independent party verify this.

Re:My take on how DuckDuckGo can outperform Google on Friday August 12, 2022 @05:41PM (#32444262)
We've indexed billions of pages already at you.com to avoid this situation. The majority of our apps like Stackoverflow and Medium etc, we've indexed ourselves.
Re:My take on how DuckDuckGo can outperform Google on Friday August 12, 2022 @05:40PM (#32444255)
We've been working on many of these suggestions at you.com

Giving users control over their search results is a big part of fighting SEO spam.

Re:Ask HN: Google Search down? on Tuesday August 09, 2022 @01:10AM (#32394370)
Good time to switch to a search engine that has code snippets, coding tutorials, AI code completion, AI blog writing, a useful yelp app, great privacy, gives control over the sources and apps I want to see and summarizes pros/cons for products.

Re:We're improving search results when you use quotes on Sunday August 07, 2022 @09:08PM (#32381486)
Would love to hear from you if we succeeded with both at you.com - we've worked a bunch on these issues you outline.
Re:We're improving search results when you use quotes on Friday August 05, 2022 @08:05PM (#32363406)
That's why at you.com we made private mode accessible without any login. And we don't even do analytics and do not store your query in private mode.

(richard, ceo of you.com here)

Re:We're improving search results when you use quotes on Friday August 05, 2022 @08:01PM (#32363381)
those "bangs" were a good idea so we got them also at you.com
Re:Why Is the Web So Monotonous? Google on Friday August 05, 2022 @03:00AM (#32352680)
Richard, CEO of you.com here. Love your two points. That's what we're doing!

For 1) we have an open app platform that allows everybody to collaborate on that first entry of the web

For 2) We let people decide the sources they want to see and if they don't like a source or app, they can downvote it and see it less in their ranker.

We will try to decentralize more over time though it's a big effort to make it fast enough still.

Re:Ask HN: Why has quality of YouTube reduced drastically? on Wednesday August 03, 2022 @11:54PM (#32339179)
CEO of you.com here. We decided that one way to avoid this long term is to let users decide on their favorite sources and apps.

I have done a lot of research in AI and it can certainly do a lot of things implicitly but some oversight and explicit user feedback is useful also.

Re:Show HN: Looria – A product (re)search engine on Tuesday July 26, 2022 @07:28PM (#32245337)
Great work!
Re:SearchHut on Friday July 15, 2022 @09:47PM (#32114611)
Word!
Re:SearchHut on Friday July 15, 2022 @09:43PM (#32114593)
I love your post. I have to say that my experience is that many in the HN community are not nearly as kind as you. Folks here will rip you apart if you don't have everything figured out :(

So, I started rolling out new features of our search engine on Twitter, Slack, etc instead of here.

Re:SearchHut on Friday July 15, 2022 @09:29PM (#32114530)
Richard, CEO at you.com here.

Users vote on their own preferences... not on other users' preferences. so i dont see how it will be gamed unless we start incorporating user preferences into global ones - which we would only do if we thought it worked better and isn't being gamed.

Re:SearchHut on Friday July 15, 2022 @02:12AM (#32105128)
That's our strategy at you.com - we start with the most popular sites, crawl them and build apps for them, eg. you.com/apps and let users vote in search results.

Full disclosure: I'm the CEO.
