Re:Where have you gone, Peter Norton? on Friday June 06, 2014 @02:04PM (#7859428)
For those questioning why Peter Norton had his arms crossed, he was waiting for Windows to load.
1. Men are more "successful" because they tend to use more violent methods - guns, jumping off high places, etc. Women are more likely to use pills. Sometimes attempts are more of a call for help than ending one's life. 2. Your question is unclear to me, but most people who have attempted and failed to commit suicide regret that decision.

Ironic, perhaps, but not oxymoronic.
Re:Oakland robberies surge as investigations sputter on Monday September 30, 2013 @03:18PM (#6471658)
As a startup venture, this rate of increase does not pass a significant investment criterion -- for me, at least.

There are apps as you describe.

A better solution would be to render the device inoperable after it has been reported stolen. I hate to be a cynic, but it seems Apple, AT&T, Verizon and others are resistant to this not because it is difficult to accomplish, but due to lower revenue possibly.

Frankly, more people are getting assaulted and injured due to smart phone thefts, and while I do blame the perpetrators, I also find inaction on the part of smart phone vendors abhorrent.

FYI, I've lived in Oakland over 30 years and have not been robbed yet. Not to say it won't happen, but people on their phones are generally more oblivious to their surroundings than usual. Oakland has its problems, but it gets an inordinate amount of this type of bad press that greases the public fear wheel.

I'm shocked my Tesla Model S is lacking in this feature. Elon must have been asleep at the wheel.

My thoughts exactly. In my business experience, I dealt with two individuals diagnosed with borderline personality disorder. Of course, I did not see their medical records; it was hearsay. However, it explained much about their behavior. It's a sad story, but it is also the face of mental illness, which is all too real. Learning to recognize and deal with this is another thing to store in one's experience quiver.

I'm happy to say that I will not be a member of this "before" group. Thanks for pointing it out today. I look forward to using your gem and buying Pete's book.

One of the major problems with U.S. healthcare is that, financially speaking, patients have been increasingly taken out of the mix beginning in the fifties. Providers and insurance carriers shield consumers from actual costs giving a false impression of the value of competent healthcare. Insurance companies’ reimbursement rates are a fraction of the billed amount. Of course, it is the person without insurance, who is stuck with what can be a very inflated invoice. Of course, there are manifold problems with this industry; but until patients are exposed to accurate financial comparisons, the costs will continue to escalate.
