"Do the next right thing" was a phrased used by Alcoholics Anonymous long before that 2019 movie came out, so I don't think calling it "The Anna Principle" is appropriate.

Also worthy of mention is the New River Gorge Bridge. [1]

And the recently-collapsed Fern Hollow Bridge in Pittsburgh. [2]

Re:Ask HN: What type of lawyer can review consultant agreements? on Saturday December 03, 2022 @02:09PM (#33846291)
IME, it seems that most of the lawyers with experience in this area primarily work for the companies that hire consultants, rather than consultants themselves. And their skillset is focused on drafting contract language that favors the customer rather than the vendor.

That's not to say that they couldn't apply that same skillset to drafting contracts that protect the interests of the consultant. It's just an observation.

How is Javascript reliant on Typescript? I've written an enormous volume of Javascript without ever having touched Typescript.

The somewhat larger New River Gorge bridge is also made from that type of steel.[1]

If that's true, my guess it that the mainstream media is aware of it and will have copies of the video.

I have experienced exactly what you're describing. I want to find out what the minimum effective layoff time is, however, so I can do it deliberately rather than randomly, and hopefully maximize the rate at which my playing progresses.

> Sorry, you're gonna have to back up this rather hefty statement with some facts. I've never seen any data to suggest that a "vast percentage" of people are at risk of becoming alcoholics.

"vulnerable to the gradual creep of addiction" and "at risk of becoming alcoholics" are not the same thing. A person might refrain from alcohol altogether because they believe, perhaps due to their family history, that if they drank on a regular basis they would become alcoholic. IOW, they feel they are vulnerable to the gradual creep of addiction. And they might be right. But as long they don't drink at all, they're not at risk of developing alcoholism.

>For one, you don't seem to have any concept of our evolutionary biology. Humans have evolved to be goal-oriented, and we receive happiness for participating in activities that are beneficial to our long-term survival.

No, we receive happiness for succeeding in activities that are beneficial to our long-term survival.

For example, I doubt that a prehistoric hunter was very happy after spending three days tramping for miles, burning precious calories, hunting for game but not finding any.

> Dont get me wrong about short sellers too. The act of short selling is technically good. There are some good firms that pay for investigations into large public companies to expose complex crimes, then short sell to recoup and profit. Melvin isnt one of them.

Why can't they recoup their costs through put options?

In my view, short selling is a legalized form of fraud. A share of stock is "borrowed", but not with the actual owner's knowledge or permission. Then it is "sold", but unlike with a normal sale, the actual owner still thinks they own that share, as does the buyer. They can't both be correct. In a normal sale of some thing, when the buyer takes ownership, the former owner must relinquish ownership. And they'll both, henceforth, behave accordingly.

In a short sale scenario, both "owners" think they own the same share of stock. The "demand" they collectively create for two shares of the stock is sated by one share. So the price drops. When you have the ability (i.e. the money) to do it on a large scale, you drive the price of the stock down. That's the scam. It's not hard to understand.

IMO, the only reason short selling is legal is because it makes very rich and very powerful people even more rich and more powerful.

>I still have a bought-and-paid-for 3.5" floppy disk of PKZip from PKWare. I am the only one I know who ever actually paid for it.

I had one too, and I held onto the floppy and the plastic folder it came in for years, until I finally trashed it in a decluttering frenzy. I think the version I registered was 1.10.

>And I thought to myself "Yep, I'm done here". Unfortunately I jumped ship too quickly and found myself in a job I hated, with a manger who (while not as vocally abusive) was just as bad.

One time, long back in my career, my then-boss jumped down my throat in a meeting for no valid reason. I clearly remember thinking to myself, "Is this it? Is this the day I tell this asshole to fuck off, and walk out the front door?" I decided not to, but I was in full-on job search mode the moment that meeting ended. It didn't take more than a couple of weeks before I gave notice. The next job was for less money, but it was basically my dream job at the time. It was the best move I ever made.

There's no moral or lesson to this story. I just thought I'd share it.
