Re:Who killed the EV cert? A browser whodunit for Halloween on Monday October 26, 2026 @05:41PM (#50251419)
I remember when these rolled out.. it was just an obvious cash grab by cert vendors, trying to create a trust-badge in collusion with browsers.

Back then, cert vendors would try to sell you on "premium" certificates.. telling you that cheap ssl certificates weren't good enough, so you needed to pay for $100-300+/yr certificate, and you could show to your visitors by displaying silly trust seals like the "Thwarte Seal".. as if customers would know who the hell Thwarte is.

Then this EV seal was launched, displaying what was essentially a trust seal in the browser.. and these same vendors would charge $500+/yr for it.

I can't express how great it is that EV certs died.

there is a middle ground between proprietary models and self-hosting: Fireworks, et al. Popular models like DeepSeek have a couple dozen providers on openrouter.
Re:Tesla Roadster on Thursday October 15, 2026 @10:03PM (#50112953)
at least the CyberTruck shipped.

9 years since the announcement of Roadster v2, people who paid 50k deposits are still waiting.

Time to up the promises, and ask for more $50k deposits for v3!

VCs are a type of PE firm. So is growth capital. You're confusing a sub type--called LBOs--for the entire industry.
Private Equity does fund R&D.. mostly the D(evelopment) part. Most R&D, both in the US and China, is not fundamental/basic research.
I disapprove of the Iran war, but to play devils advocate: there's a major shift occurring right now in the way wars are fought. The Ukraine-Russia war has made it clear that conventional militaries will find themselves in a meat grinder in the next war.. that includes the US.

Iran is one of the largest drone producers... and the US military is doing live testing of anti-drone weapons and energy directed weapons in the straight of hormuz against Iranian drones.

A lot of Americans are going to die in the next war if we don't figure out the right way to maintain our dominance against these new tactics.

the current ai boom started here in america with private funds. china is spending government funds in a desperate attempt not to lose the race. it’s not clear that china is in the stronger position, at least yet.
and yet the oversupply of investment funds looking for projects created the current AI boom here in America, not China.

China “leads” but only in iterating on things already invented.

but we never ask what’s wrong with china that they spend so much on r&d but fail to invent novel things.

> There's not a "pay them more" button we can hit that generates more domestic doctors, especially not in under 10 years.

That's literally how the button works. An undersupply in the market, increases prices.. kids and students deciding what they want to do with their life, see the wages and decide 10 years of school is worth it... and after 10 years you get more doctors.

If there's an undersupply, that's a clear indication that young people are looking at the field and deciding the wages don't justify the investment.

By short-circuiting the process of the free market, you're guaranteeing the shortage will continue.

> There is a fairly consistent schedule posted by david927.

My comment about the schedule is based only on david927's posting schedule. I don't see the schedule.. they look like random dates during the month. If you see a pattern there, feel free to spell it out for me.

I also couldn't find any discussion with dang. link?

Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (October 2026) on Friday October 02, 2026 @12:35AM (#49929878)
looking at the post dates, there doesn't seem to be a schedule at all. it's posted randomly... posts on 9th through the 30th. Back in 2024, it was even posted regularly on the 1st.

IMO if there isn't a schedule, then posting it on the 1st sounds good.. since that's when the other posts like this are submitted.

Im building serverless hosting for Wordpress (+ serverless mariadb) with the dev tooling I wish Wordpress had.. including mcp and cli that fully exposes the wp cli, mariadb, and all of the underlying infrastructure. So everything you can do through the dashboard, an agent can do via mcp or cli.

For example, if Im debugging a plugin, an agent can just connect to the site, read or modify the code, see what it's writing to disk or db, test it's changes, etc.

And this is standard WP -- this isn't a rewrite like emdash. So the fun part is figuring out how to make it all work without modifying WP, or requiring plugins to be installed, etc.

Re:GPT-6 Sol and Luna on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @03:37PM (#49806962)
The major difference being the 1M token context window. Once you exceed 272K input tokens, Codex Sol is roughly the same price as Opus; and Astra similar to Fable.
Re:GPT-6 Sol and Luna on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @03:05PM (#49806470)
Care to be specific? 20x is closed. And the 2x pricing is literally on the pricing sheet for gpt-6 astra, sol and luna.
Re:GPT-6 Sol and Luna on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @03:02PM (#49806408)
Same experience. Have both subs. It's just not true anymore that Codex gives you more usage than Claude.

Makes me think they picked Codex, stopped trying Claude, and just hang on to outdated beliefs about the value they're receiving.

Re:GPT-6 Sol and Luna on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @02:54PM (#49806305)
> Claude Code 20x and Codex Pro 20x

That isn't a valid comparison, since Codex 20x is closed. So we should be comparing Claud 20x to Codex 5x + credits.

Also in Codex, even though you can increase the context window to 1m so its on par with Claude, exceeding the default is billed at 2x.

I think he's saying fishing for evidence is not "policing", since fishing for evidence is illegal, and therefore not within the bounds of the job.
Re:GPT-6 Astra on Thursday September 03, 2026 @07:15PM (#49558444)
It's not energy costs. The US produces about 70% more electricity per capita. Chinese households do pay less than half what US households pay for electricity, but that's because the NRDC sets prices below costs for households. They make it up by charging industry more, and the industrial electricity prices in China are roughly 34% higher than in the US.
Re:Our decision on Cursor following its acquisition by SpaceX on Saturday August 29, 2026 @12:14AM (#49486819)
Cursor might have framed it that way at the time, but 4 months prior Anthropic cut OpenAIs access under the same clause in the ToS: https://www.wired.com/story/anthropic-revokes-openais-access...

And a month before the OpenAI block, they blocked Windsurf for the same reason: https://www.forbes.com/sites/johanmoreno/2025/06/05/anthropi...

So its pretty clear the TOS had this clause prior to Jan 2026.

Anthropic already banned xAI for very similar ToS violations earlier this year: https://x.com/kyliebytes/status/2009686466746822731?s=46

So this is OpenAI following suit after Musk admitted to distilling their models.

This was bound to happen once Cursor decided to sell itself to a competing model provider.

It'll be interesting to see if Anthropic applies their ban to Cursor, or if that datacenter deal they signed with Musk changes anything.

If it's truly necessary, the fact that it's unfilled would be directly related to it being low paid.

And if the employer isn't willing to pay the cost of labor to fill the position, it directly raises the question of whether its "necessary".

Microsoft made $134B in net profit last year, and is currently valued at nearly $4T. They have the resources to solve this if they wanted to.

"Their leaders are often university grads from the west."

This is a generalization.. and you're right that there are terrorist groups run by people educated in the west... but this isn't true for Boko Haram. Barkura Doro has no formal education.

Re:The US Used to Demand the Best Tech. Now We Ban It on Sunday June 28, 2026 @04:57PM (#48711578)
US bans are based on the incorrect idea that we have control over AI. But the ban only reduces the most advanced model available from US companies. Models from other countries continue development. It's as if the US decided to hit pause on competing on AI and we're just going to let someone else win it.

The US could be using these models to fix bugs and defend out systems.. but instead, we're all waiting for open source models to exceed the best unbanned model available in the US(0), and then we can all watch while attackers -- who can use any available open source model, including banned models -- to attack every US company on the internet.

US bans are a choice: a choice to lose to China; a choice to leave US companies defenseless; a choice to reduce competitiveness of the US in software. Every time a US person or company watches someone use models they are prohibited from using to achieve something US models can't, they create opposition to this ban. I can't imagine this is a sustainable policy.

0. Currently open source models are included in consideration for the "best model in the US" -- but if they're willing to ban the best from Anthropic/OpenAI, I wouldn't necessarily assume that all open source models will always be available within the US.

If that happens it'll be an absolute disaster. Imagine a scenario where Anthropic and OpenAI prohibit most US companies from using their latest models because of safety.. And meanwhile attackers use equivalent open source models to attack US companies.

Any prohibition on open source models will do nothing to fix the problem.. since attackers will never feel bound to the law. All advanced models must be available for defensive purposes.

Re:U.S. government will decide who gets to use GPT-5.6 on Friday June 26, 2026 @03:00PM (#48690567)
Im not worried about this at all. The OpenAI, Anthropic and the US government can play this game all they want... They're just accelerating the development of open source models; and helping destroy the lead the US has built in AI, and their profit margins along with it.

This is like the battle between PostgreSQL and Oracle all over. Move up market, isolate yourself to enterprises, and watch while everyone else builds on PostgreSQL and erodes any technical advantage you had, until people just stop talking about you altogether.
