Why stop there? We could do long division before the calculator and hand write before the typewriter.

The building is hosting a party tomorrow so I was banking on a chance encounter there, but if not I think I’m going to have to.

Last week I entered the elevator in my apartment building and there were two women who started laughing and proclaimed “whoops we didn’t hit L”. I immediately replied “if that’s the worst thing that happens to you today you’re doing alright”. Followed by them replying “or it’s the beginning of a Dateline tragedy”.

We all had a good laugh then she introduced herself as the mother of the other woman who happened to be very attractive. We continued chatting and exchanged contact info.

I’m not sure anything will come of it but I do know that I had a much more pleasant and serendipitous elevator experience because instead of just smiling after they admitted their mistake, I threw out a silly reply which turned into what it did.

Unless they had a 6 month career they likely have still done very well

This might be the best thing I’ve read on HN all year. Thank you for the inspiration.
“ This is why we can't have the government file taxes on our behalf: because Intuit would no longer be collecting rent, and rent-collecting must be protected at all costs. ”

AKA The Shirky principle, which was discussed in great depth last week

I was on a flight last Thursday and saw this happen.

Vitamix blenders are 8-10x the cost of a normal blender and have a cult like following. With the right branding home appliances can also double as a status symbol in American kitchens.

You can do anything but you can’t do everything (well).

Am I the only person who was unaware that pixel was short for “picture element”?
Yeah that’s fair, the same can be said about really strong people who only rely on strength. They seem really good initially but 5 years later they are still just trying their Americanas from inside someone’s closed guard.
Nicky Rodriguez, a life long wrestler was beating world class black belts in only a year of training. We had a D1 wrestler join our gym and after the first week was awarded a blue belt (usually takes 2-3 years).

They won’t know many submissions, and initially are more susceptible to exposing their back (in wrestling being on your back is the worst possible outcome where in jiu jitsu it’s an offensive position), but at the end of the day grappling is grappling.

Re:Ask HN: What do you do to start and develop friendships? on Monday January 23, 2023 @07:37AM (#34488091)
Train jiu jitsu. I’m currently in Paris for the week with 12 of my teammates who are also now some of my best friends, all of who I met after I was 30.
Re:Airbnb’s Stunning IPO on Friday December 11, 2020 @11:41AM (#25387672)
Maybe go out to a high end dinner in Miami and meet people before assuming I’m a drug dealer.
Re:Airbnb’s Stunning IPO on Friday December 11, 2020 @11:08AM (#25387290)
No doubt, point I’m making is it’s not just folks from red states disregarding government advice.
Re:Airbnb’s Stunning IPO on Friday December 11, 2020 @11:00AM (#25387179)
Maybe ease up on the costal holier than thou sentiment. I’m in Miami right now and 90% of the people I’ve met are tech / finance types from NYC doing blow inside of clubs until 4am.

Inverted shoulder press is super effective and not as hard as a handstand pushup.
Re:New fitness habits being created during Covid? on Monday August 10, 2020 @06:32PM (#24114874)
Before the pandemic I definitely would agree with this. I was doing a meathead lifting routine and BJJ 6x a week and was fairly strong. When everything shut down I started doing door pull-ups and Dylan Werner’s True Strength series and could not finish a single workout without stopping or cheating. 4 or 5 months later the gyms open up and I’m at least as strong if not stronger than I was before.
First of all excellent write up, thanks for putting in the time.

Apologies if you mentioned this in the article and I missed it, but what advantages does an approach like this have over creating a HOC?

Is this the first step to achieving an Iron Man nanotech style suit?
This is particularly important problem when playing poker.
Re:It’s Time to Build on Sunday April 19, 2020 @09:36AM (#22915781)
To what end do we put the onus of an individuals poor decisions on “policy measures”. Should we put a tax on minutes playing video games? Should we reinstate prohibition?

It’s dangerous to equate someone choosing to “get fries with that” in the same vein as a chemical addiction to drugs.

Re:It’s Time to Build on Saturday April 18, 2020 @08:16PM (#22912278)
As someone who lost 60lbs eating subway and Taco Bell for 8 months I don’t agree with this whatsoever.

If we are talking about weight loss (which we are) “healthy” foods are not a requirement, a calorie deficit is.

Re:It’s Time to Build on Saturday April 18, 2020 @07:45PM (#22912109)
Using an example where an outcome (weight gain) is completely driven by an individual’s (in)action (consuming more energy than expending) is probably not the best argument for opposing a “try harder” approach to living.

Yes it’s never been easier to eat like shit and have hobbies that require no movement, but the opposite is also true.

To an end user there’s an icon on their screen, they tap it, the app opens. It didn’t matter if they downloaded from the AppStore or from a website. This is no longer the case which is why the OP is upset.
Really great, I think something like style-dictionary, or similar token manager could help remove your use of magic numbers in your styles (padding: 13px, margin-top: 7px)
What value does a comment like this add? The question asks for the perspective of someone during the dot com bust and this was his.
Re:Show HN: I made a jobs board for developers without degrees on Wednesday September 18, 2019 @12:59PM (#21007347)
Is this actually a problem still? I haven’t hopped around as much as most SWEs I suppose, but I’ve never faced an issue not having a degree in any of my previous hiring processes.

I work at a large bank and we don’t screen candidates for degrees.

Re:Show HN: I made a jobs board for developers without degrees on Wednesday September 18, 2019 @12:54PM (#21007294)
Yes generally interested in six figure salaries with relatively low entry barrier.

Related Rentals allows you to do this all over the USA fairly seemlessly as long as you’re moving into a more expensive unit.
