Re:Ask HN: Computer Vision for Collective Good? on Wednesday July 27, 2022 @05:27PM (#32257234)
We are. We're building a bionic eye to help restore some sense of vision for those who are completely vision impaired. Computer vision is the cornerstone of what we do. If you're completely vision impaired this kind of intervention is life changing.

Feels like a bit of a shameless plug but...we're building a bionic eye to restore a sense of vision for people with blindness.

Just checked it out. I like the idea of BuildJet. Something dead simple like this is what I've been looking for.

The biggest problem is that I don't feel comfortable putting our IP out on a server managed by a small provider. If you had an offering where I could self-host, I'd be very interested.

BTW. You have a broken link to "Privacy" from the "Terms" page.

Sounds exactly like what we do for medical device software.

Version pinning, self-managed forks and code reviews of the dependency on upgrade.

Re:Corona Game: A simulation of how Covid-19 spreads on Thursday July 08, 2021 @05:18AM (#27769764)
As a Sydneysider, I'm disappointed and feel betrayed by Gladys. I'd have preferred a swift and tight lockdown rather than this pissweak setting that most of Sydney seems to be flaunting. It's clearly not going to work, and she'll open up NSW with infections to sky rocket.

I'd vote for Dan if I could.

Re:Berkshire Hathaway’s Stock Price vs. 32-Bit Integers on Thursday May 06, 2021 @03:48PM (#27068262)
Buffet has said before that it's intentionally high to keep out short-term traders and inexperienced traders. He wants investors who will hold for long terms. If the price is so high, there's only a particular clientele that can afford to buy it.

They do have a different code of class b stock that is more affordable.

A lot of good suggestions in here. I can only comment on what helped me...

After around 15 years as a professional developer, I had that same kind of deflation (I was 33/34 at the time). I took a slight change in role towards technical product management, and enjoyed that for a while. It allowed me to still be technical and engaged with the engineers, but also allowed me to step up and focus on solving customer problems rather than compiler problems.

I did that for 5-6 years while also growing into an engineering manager. I did eng management for another 5 or so years before realising that all my technical skills had trophied...to the extent that although I could hold an educated conversation with the devs, I wasn't really trusted to make changes to the codebase. E.g comments like "Look out! Rexelhoff made another commit!" which were meant in jest but stung a bit more than I'd like to admit. I felt like I had one choice and that was to push forward up the ladder and become entirely hands-off. The anxiety of being discovered as a fraud was off the charts. A fraud developer and a fraud manager.

Around this time I came across Charity Majors's blog/tweets that encouraged engineering managers to not be afraid or ashamed to go into development once again. Not to think of it as a step backwards but being able to do a little bit of this, and then go back to doing a little bit of that...and then at some point later go once again into management with unparalleled experience under your belt.

So I left my cushy senior management position and took a role that had me back on the tools 100% (small start up where I was the only software eng). Leveraging 2 decades of experience and being completely into dev has been the most fun in the two years I've been doing this. Reminded me why I got into software engineering in the first place. The excitement of solving the problem, the challenge of knowing I'm the critical piece that can get it done. Mentoring junior developers. I'm fortunate enough for my manager to have complete trust in me and give me autonomy to just get it done, because he knows I've been on the other side as a manager and that I respect the business's need.

I plan to build up a team in this place. I know that someday I'll outgrow being just an engineer, and I'm OK with that. For now, I'm just enjoying working with a small team and getting shit done.

Re:Ask HN: OCR Libraries for Receipt Scanning/Parsing? on Saturday April 03, 2021 @05:52PM (#26685068)
If anyone is interested in keeping long-term records and functionality, I'd suggest steering away from anything Google, with their track record of killing things.

Re:GameStop Is Happening Again on Thursday February 25, 2021 @03:06PM (#26267561)
WTF did I just watch?
Evernote.

I use Swiftscan Pro on iOS to take pics of receipts or single page documents. It OCRs and pushes them into Evernote.

I use PDFPen Pro on Mac to OCR longer documents scanned in using the office scannner/printer. This is triggered when I drop a file into a monitored folder. My applescript fires PDFPen, performs OCR and then imports into Evernote.

I have another monitored folder to import PDFs that don't require OCR (just import into Evernote)

And lastly if I get an email with a PDF attachment, I forward it to my special Evernote email address where it's automatically imported.

The main reason I haven't moved away from Evernote is because I want access to my files on all my devices and at any possible moment, and I want the service I use to outlive me. Evernote so far hasn't failed on either of these promises (though the latter does possibly worry me)

Re:Ask HN: How/Where do you store/backup your photos safely? on Wednesday January 13, 2021 @04:21AM (#25759882)
* Google Photos for indexing/searching/browsing

* Synology DS Photo and PhotoStation for local storage

* Google Photos Uploader to sync DSLR photos to Google Photos

* copy of synology photos to an external USB drive

* Backblaze backup of everything on the Synology

Why is this not higher?

Every atlassian thread should include a sticky "Go here for an alternative" post

The robotic voice is unfortunately a dealbreaker.

I currently use https://read2me.online/ which uses the ML TTS voices from one of the big cloud providers....Google (I think). I then have a custom RSS file hosted on an S3 bucket.

I hand crank the whole system when there's something new I want to listen to

This.

The other issue to contend with in his grandparents demographic is the perception of being deaf and being seen wearing such a big bulky item. Image consciousness is a large hurdle to overcome these

Great ingenuity but commercially it's hard to see it take traction

Re:Ask HN: What interesting problems are you working on? on Wednesday January 29, 2020 @05:35AM (#22179139)
We're building an implantable device for blind patients that delivers electrical stimulation to the optic nerve via the retina.

The implant helps patients perceive visual information about their surroundings.

Pretty cool tech and fun to work on, too.

Gun control, yes.

Healthcare, it seems like the Libs (at least) are bent on destroying Medicare in favour of what? Likely private healthcare
