Re:The End of the Redis Adventure on Tuesday June 30, 2020 @10:28AM (#23690356)
This is not first time Antirez quit. 10 or 8 years ago he deleted his Twitter account with 10k followers. I think today it reached critical mass, and he does not want to be public figure anymore.
What is an alternative for example for driving? Computer and lidar that needs a kilowatt just to do single task, not universal?
I dont buy that. Vision developed for different purpose than to provide full HD sharp vision across entire FOV. It has great pattern recognition and peripheral motion detection. It heals itself. It has low power consumption. It does not overheat and can work in many environments, even under water.

Modern competition like Go PRO require too much baby sitting, and can hardly work for 2 hours without maintenance.

Does Apple actually invests into laptop/desktop development? They are usually couple of years behind competition (DDR3, Sky Lake chips). While their ARM chips are heavily developed.

I think they decided long time ago that ARM is good enough, and are waiting for train to stop to change the engine. It is not about Intel quality, but about saving money and independence. AMD is not even considered as an alternative...

It is possible to individually block "activists" on FB.
No, that is an estimate from forum thread compiled from many articles. Wikipedia claims 1400 victims just in Rotherham.
British government has transparency problem at much higher level. There is official report from investigation of rape gangs. It includes almost 100k child rape victims in many cities over 3 decades. Government refuses to release it, and pretends this abuse does not exists.
The question is not really "was this particular one man made?", but "is it possible?" It is pretty obvious 1970ties technology was not advanced enough to pull this stunt. But times change.
Re:8GB Raspberry Pi 4 on sale now at $75 on Thursday May 28, 2020 @05:05AM (#23335075)
I want local machine, so remote VNC is out.

There is no Linux like solution for android phone that runs Xserver and OpenJDK reliably. Samsung DEX emulation was the only usable solution, but that was killed off. Termux can not run OpenJDK, some weird issues with crashing.

Also most devices do not have enough cooling capacity, max performance can be only delivered in short bursts before CPU gets throttled down. If you hack it to run at full speed for hours, it freezes.

PI is simply the only option at this size, with enough CPU power and good Linux support.

x86 Linux had PAE mode, where OS could use large memory, but single process was limited to 32bit. There was some performance overhead.
Programmer can still implement bad decision very well :)

What is the size and power consumption? Can it handle 4k TV?

Also I would much rather do technical support for Pi, than some old junk in questionable state of disrepair.

Cool. I need small machine that can run java and Intellij Idea to go with my phone. Great for section hikes while pretending to do WFH :)
As a programmer I am not responsible (and paid) for management decisions. It is also not my job to fix toxic culture in a company.

You can set charging options in BIOS. It is possible to disable battery completely.

Sometimes it is good to have some balance from official sources. WHO:

* Masks do not work on corona virus

* Taiwan is a Chinese province, not an independent country

* Corona virus does not transmit between people.

It is just clickbait.

People who do not get organs, die in hospitals, not in cars. With that logic person would be a murder, for refusing to "donate" their organs.

It is even worse.

Germany is employing large number of Romanians for agricultural work. At peak of corona crisis, it cramped many people into airplanes and shipped them from Romania to Germany. No social distancing whatsoever. They sleep in container houses 8 people per room.

No way to use "refugees" for fruit picking.

Toilet paper is gross, civilized people use bidet or wet wipes.

Not really. Most 'green' cars are in fact burning coal.
I would say that selling nudes is pretty nice work, compared to farming, fast food or roofing.

If anything real pornstars and prostitutes are leaving their professions, because they make more money as streamers :-))

Twitter, but will not post links here, should be searchable. I think it will follow Premium Snapchat and similar platforms...
It was originally for cosplayers and models, very very soft-core, not porn.

Platform is liable if it is offering prostitution (google "Craigslist controversy"). Only Fans has zero paperwork for this in their disclaimers. I am not a lawyer, but I think they are in gray area.

Interesting I read yesterday that OnlyFans started banning for nudes and is refunding customers. Some models lost thousands of dollars.

Running porn site requires a lot of paperwork and is relatively risky.

WFH is now mainstream. In past everyone had to love noisy open plane office, and sacrifice two weeks of holiday to flu every year. Now there is a solid argument for alternative.
