GPT5 is some sort of quantized model, its not SOTA.

The trust that OpenAI would be SOTA has been shattered. They were among the best with o3/o4 and 4.5. This is a budget model and they rolled it out to everyone.

I unsubscribed. Going to use Gemini, it was on-par with o3.

Yep, this caused me to unsubscribe. o3/o4 and 4.5 were extremely good. GPT5 is worse than both.
Absolutes, monastic take... Yeah I imagine not a lot of people seek out your advice.
Well, like, thats just your opinion man.

And probably close to wrong if we are looking at the sheer scale of use.

There is a bit of reality denial among anti-AI people. I thought about why people don't adjust to this new reality. I know one of my friends was anti-AI and seems to continue to be because his reputation is a bit based on proving he is smart. Another because their job is at risk.

I remember when HN would literally shadowban you for suggesting they do this.

Now with 'troll farms'/'reputation management' being so ubiquitous, we'd call Apple irresponsible to not be doing this.

But I like the walled prison where I can't screw up and make choices for myself. I appreciate that Apple makes it so I can't accidentally give my coordinates and have some Monarch track me and murder me or leak my noods.

+4500 upvoots

(I always thought it was suspicious that the anti-apple headline had +30k upvoots on reddit, but the top comment was pro-apple with significantly less. Its almost like they paid an external marketing team/troll farm to do reputation management)

I am so happy I learned about Philosophical Pragmatism. If its useful use it, if its not useful don't use it.

Replicated studies can likely be replicated under the same conditions.

N=1 means you might be able to believe it, but if the results contradict reality, toss it out.

I no longer feel like I need to 'trust science'. No need to trust. Use it if its useful, don't if its not.

This has eliminated those grandiose happy papers that propose a pretty popular fair world that contradict what we actually see.

If the findings are replicated, thats fine, you can begin to trust.

But the findings are often not replicated.

I'm not entirely sure how to do this, but I think it would benefit society to have Wittgenstein's Tractatus Logico-Philosophicus taught, and probably William James's Pragmatism.

Wittgenstein is a difficult read, Pragmatism is not difficult, but I feel like many people wouldn't understand what is being said.

The goal of this would be to teach how language is the basis for all science, and as a result cannot explain what is realistically happening, but rather a useful estimation.

But right now, the majority of the population believes in scientific realism and have no idea that biology/medicine are systems with rough edges that cannot understand everything.

I imagine the humility for doctors would be a benefit. The general population would be more likely to work towards developing solutions and trying things rather than expecting a simple solution.

But again, I have no idea how to actually do this. It took almost a decade of reading to learn about these concepts, and it took humanity ~2400 years since Plato to figure this out.

Thats the one thing about Apple products. You get all the features of SOTA but 5-6 years after its already been in use.

Hahahahahaha 4 years to pay off education for the most lucrative profession in the US. (And you assumed 80k/yr for living expenses... whats the median income in the US? 50-60k? hahahahaha)

Yeah thats a steal.

You can't really paint this in a negative light.

Re:Why doctors hate their computers (2018) on Monday August 04, 2025 @09:36PM (#44793408)
No. Don't let the cartel propagate this lie.

>shortage of physicians

>Asking prospective doctors to fund their own residency slots will only make that problem worse.

Its literally the opposite.

If you have them fund their own spots, there would be potentially unlimited spots.

The limit is caused by the boogeyman of not getting government funding, not that people can't afford the temporary debt.

There was some stat that 1 in 4 qualified people become doctors. The problem is not supply. The problem is the cartel legally reducing supply to prop up wages.

>English teachers

Since discovering Analytical Philosophy, I think it is irresponsible to combine Nonfiction and fiction under the term 'English'.

As an engineer, I write emails, they need to be clear, factual, etc... This is in huge contrast with fiction, where writers get merit for being intentionally ambiguous with things like metaphors and symbolism.

What an incredible disservice to students and society to consider English(nonfiction) an 'art'. It should be treated like math and science.

I had to become a middle aged adult and learn this for myself.

'Easy'

Well, I didn't know about this. I didn't consider it. I also would then need to spend a non-tax deductible amount on this. And IIRC Tesla entered the Fortune 500 before 2022 when that TSLS started. Then I'd have to actually do the calculation, and continue doing the calculation as SPY/my 401k adjusted each month or so.

'Easy'

Re:Why doctors hate their computers (2018) on Monday August 04, 2025 @02:22PM (#44789613)
Uh... You are talking about the highest paid profession in the US.

There is no debt problem.

I joke about how bad doctors are at math, but this is a pretty obvious case when Physicians are making 200-500k/yr and complaining about 300k of debt.

Re:Why doctors hate their computers (2018) on Monday August 04, 2025 @02:20PM (#44789597)
Why is the government paying for graduate education? I paid for my own graduate education.
Re:The Toyota Corolla of programming on Monday August 04, 2025 @12:39PM (#44788228)
But I can deploy a decent sized Laravel app in about 2 days... I would need to learn the javascript equivalent.
I probably wouldn't care much about Tesla and Elon, but he scammed his way to become a fortune 500 company which made SPY and my 401k autobuy Tesla.

Buying SPY, my mistake. Being incentivized to put money in my 401k... That is a bit harder to solve.

Re:Why doctors hate their computers (2018) on Monday August 04, 2025 @09:12AM (#44785294)
I'm not sure where you got this information, but it does not apply to Physician services who have gotten 5% year over year increases in medicare reimbursements.

Physical Therapists? Sure. But the American Medical Association is a fierce lobbyist.

Re:Why doctors hate their computers (2018) on Monday August 04, 2025 @09:10AM (#44785271)
The longer I live, the more I see Physicians as people who are bad at math and/or who have parents who are physicians.

There are a few people that are nither, but I think its safe to say at least 50% of physicians qualify as this.

Re:Why doctors hate their computers (2018) on Monday August 04, 2025 @09:08AM (#44785247)
>doctors are cogs in a much larger healthcare system run by suits for purposes that one suspects have more to do with money than medicine.

Is that actually accurate? The American Medical Association (the Physician cartel/trade association) bribes/lobbies about equal as hospitals/owners.

They also legally reduce supply using their private, unelected, ACGME.

If we use lobbying numbers, they are just as obsessed with money as the owners.

Re:UN report finds UN reports are not widely read on Sunday August 03, 2025 @03:26PM (#44779000)
My two strikes against the UN:

>In international relations, no one really takes institutionalism seriously. Bilateral agreements and power are so monumentally more important that it overshadows posturing.

>I once read the WHO recommendation on children watching TV. It said 1 minute of TV watching before the age of 1 was detrimental. There was no science, it was just a panel of experts.

Anti-science + idealistic organization... what do I benefit from caring about the UN?

Thank you for the heads up, I just uninstalled that app. I had it from 1 or 2 years ago and havent used it since.

I feel like I'm being proven right that when selecting software, it should be open source and hosted on-site.

Even if this causes problems, the alternative seems riskier.

It doesnt really matter if Pragmatism is 'Truth'. Its useful. If its useful, use it. If its not useful, don't use it. There is no knowledge claim here.

It does matter if Platonic Realists are claiming circles are special properties that exist outside our universe. There is a knowledge claim here.

>I don't think knowledge is divine.

You are going to have the existential crisis. Your ontological and epistemological beliefs are about to converge on anti-realism.

I recommend again that book Pragmatism. You will personally benefit from learning about the flaws of Platonic Realism, Monism, and Universals. You will be able to answer questions more accurately.

I know I get book recommendations and I generally ignore them, but I will challenge you to read for ~5-10 minutes. I think you will be hooked:

When was the glory days? Pre 1900s with slavery? The war and interwar years?

The cold war?

Pessimistic.

Re:The Vatican Observatory Looks to the Heavens on Friday August 01, 2025 @07:37AM (#44755422)
You could have an existential crisis if you keep reading about ontology and epistemology. I'm 50/50. Def sad there is no universals, but its also liberating.

You would be classified as a Platonic Realist or Scientific Realist. I am a Fallibilist and Instrumentationalist. Its not that we are denying the usefulness of these claims, we are denying the certainty of our knowledge being divine.

If you want an extremely short book, easy to read, natively English, and the Magnum Opus of a field: Pragmatism by William James.

Separately:

>2 x pi x r = c is a also tautological if that is what you defined c to be. That's obviously not useful.

Idk, I find it useful.

Re:The Vatican Observatory Looks to the Heavens on Thursday July 31, 2025 @04:53PM (#44750007)
>It seams like you conclude from the fact that there are a lot of (not sure if infinite) properties of the universe, that none is really important?

Yeah thats basically it.

Analytical Philosophy can generate linguistically true statements. I just don't find "1 = 1" interesting. You are doing the same thing with 2 x pi x r = c. That really boils down to 1 = 1. I think this is useful, but I don't think there is ontologically anything more special about circles vs 1 = 1.

>If you give me an electron microscope I can show you the "shape" of an atom. A single atom is also a property of the universe, but that is not the kind of property we are talking about. But it is strange that they all look alike, isn't it?

You mean, using our detection mechanisms that convert data into something we can understand with human vision and brains? How do we know they are that shape, rather than a 5D string? How do we even know they have a shape, and its not just a failure of our detection mechanisms and its merely useful to imagine it with such a shape? Not to mention, what if all atoms are technically different and we are merely assigning it to be the same shape because we don't understand the differences yet?

Anyway, I reiterate, you are speaking like a Platonic Realist/Scientific Realist. The more modern understanding is withholding ontological beliefs and Instrumentationalism.

I may suggest talking to chatGPT about this. But otherwise maybe send an email or add it temporarily to your profile. I put my philosophy substack in my profile, I'll respond in detail to your thoughts via substack.

I cannot imagine using Anaconda with how many issues I had. Virtual Environments have been superior.
