Which proportionately affects those with large investments, removing growth that was speculative in the first place, meanwhile bailouts are paid by tax payers.

FastMail is great, I'm not sure there's the same expectations around privacy though. I've been using it for years and love my masked emails, but I don't have any expectations that my data is locked down or encrypted, and one legal request would expose my info.
Re:Proton's CEO Cancels AI 'Re-Interviews' on Friday October 30, 2026 @02:28PM (#50308195)
If you're a start up especially in silicon valley, it doesn't matter how well something is built if you can't get to market, which creates a toxic culture of build fast at all cost, that small detail will be a "good problem to have", and AI has thrown jet fuel on the dumpster fire.

Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @12:39PM (#50246728)
You're admitting the problem here, anthropic needs revenue to keep growing and growing, yet you're already settled into a willingness to pay of only $20/month as probably a fairly ideal customer, bigger better models just aren't valuable to most people at the price they need to be to make the money back.
Re:No Signs of AI Payoff Outside the Tech Sector on Saturday October 24, 2026 @04:06PM (#50224641)
I know of a brake parts factory outside dayton ohio who had the Microsoft folks come through with promises well over a year ago now. They've already overspent and had to pull back their AI budgets when it made more work than it solved.

Let's not forget tech was in a major slowdown announcing layoffs left and right before AI picked up

...why space force?

Is HAM radio really extinguished? All it takes is passing a test, and the rules around it seem more valuable to sharing a public resource (frequency spectrum) than detrimental?

Lack of trust in authority is a sad slippery slope.

But apple said their AI only falls back to the private cloud when it has to? Just kidding, near every request needs to fallback, because a phone can't actually run a real LLM, no matter how many "neural cores" it has..
Re:New $100k H-1B visa fee pushes tech jobs offshore on Monday September 14, 2026 @11:08AM (#49698227)
The US says they don't want them, the point of the article is the new visa requirements (surprise) aren't converting into hiring US citizens but instead pushing the roles offshore.
Re:Why is Google still serving dodgy ads? on Sunday September 13, 2026 @02:35PM (#49687193)
There is am extremely pervasive trick where bots repost trending comments rewritten in AI very early in videos and boost their bot comments above the original, then if a bot lands a top comment the profile is suddenly switched to porn/scam links with a female model as the profile picture.

It's so common and so clearly reported by many people that I'm left to assume Google likes the engagement the profiles bring and chooses to leave them up.

Re:Flock used >100 times to track veteran who recorded traffic stop on Wednesday September 09, 2026 @08:00PM (#49636369)
My counter example is Sam Francisco, where window smashings almost reached 3 figures PER DAY because they wouldn't be enforced. It was more police resources that finally curbed the problem, police started taking window smashing seriously and actually going after criminals, and to no surprise the numbers plummeted.

That tiny subset of heroics is not trivial just because it's a small number. Police are in danger every day and even if they draw a weapon .1% of the time that 1/1000 is everything, if they're not respected for putting their lives on the line then why would anyone take on the job. SF already can't hire enough police in part because of the anti police culture and overtime rates are a huge drain on the budget.

Preventing all crimes is impossible, but the culture that forms around taking them seriously or not absolutely contributes to local crime rates. In SF gangs and like minded criminals all talk to each other, they know whether they will get away with crimes, and it's why young children feel brazen enough to commit violent crime knowing the system will protect them.

Ivory tower academics can analyze police all they want from their already safe neighborhoods, the rest of us have no patience for it. I said this topic was a wedge, and even if I'm wrong it absolutely represents the sentiment of a huge portion of regular people who vote, and will vote red on this issue alone.

You probably won't read this, but I agree my response was uncharitable and presumptuous of your perspective. I've just met enough people who want to "abolish the police" who have zero clue what they're talking about, who absolutely fit the narrative I erroneously painted of you.

While I don't think police are omniscient superheros stopping crime before it happens, they are often true heros in every sense of the word. They put their lives on the line in very dangerous situations to try and prevent danger to others, and cops are killed in duty very regularly to no fanfare outside the local community.

Police are a public good. Without a public police force the wealthy would happily fund their own security, and most already do. There are neighborhoods in San francisco with private security teams who simply bypass the shortcomings of SFPD. I'm not sure I follow why police inherently exist to serve only the interests of the wealthy. I agree with most everything else you said.

Re:My Feed, My Way on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @01:58AM (#49606020)
This reminds me of the YouTube creator Technology Connections trying to engage with people on bluesky, which already provides feed customization and even lets you write code to build your own feed algorithms. He loosely coined the term "algorithmic complacency" to explain how users didn't like bluesky specifically because they had to explicitly choose who or what they wanted to follow, his fear being that especially young people would rather be served slop than decide for themselves what content they want to see.

Re:Ask HN: How do you manage skills files? on Monday September 07, 2026 @03:57AM (#49595297)
Lookup the Claude managed agents architecture for skills, they have a kind of progressive exposure where skills have a title that triggers the skill, an index file that is loaded when triggered, and additional files and scripts that are available once triggered but not loaded by default.
Ever been mugged? I said this topic was a wedge, you are clearly someone who already doesn't have to deal with crime (as I said, privileged), and are projecting your own insecurities about it. In real life, good people want criminals stopped at all costs, especially when it inevitably happens to them. I'd love for police to catch the bike thief, we all hate bad policing, but being unconditionally anti-police is a great way to get normal people to disagree with your politics, and we get people like trump.
You are not separating the vast majority of policing every day which is good and attempts to stop evil people. I’m not against transparency and reform, I’m saying these poor communities need more good policing not less.
Don’t forget OxyContin, which ruined entire families being marketed as “safe” pain relief.
Being anti police is a bit of a wedge in US politics, it's privileged to say we don't need as much police because the poorest communities are often who need it most.

Abusing surveillance tools has nothing to do with legitimate policing, so "over-policing" is probably the wrong word.

The real answer to your question is the US bond market is an auction, and rates are going up and up, with some sketchy tactics being employed to try and keep them down.

What’s happening to US bonds has been compared to using a credit card to pay off your mortgage...

Which they never will on their own, so surely conservation regulations need to be enforced, too bad the US is moving backwards right now in that regard

Re:How accurate have Ed Zitron's AI skeptic predictions been? on Wednesday September 02, 2026 @01:50AM (#49532230)
The top people at these companies don't spend all day building useful products, they have entire teams of people working strategy and looking at numbers to ensure their foothold in the various markets stays air tight and free of any real competition. The simplest example of this is the "switch your search engine back to Google" pop-up that effectively encourages users to switch back to Google if their default search engine changed via installing an extension.
