This isn't the same ad as described in the article, but is a government funded Saatchi one from around the same time: https://www.noplacetohide.org.uk/ > The campaign is funded by the UK Government and has been developed by a steering group of child safety organisations with support from M&C Saatchi.
Re:The Work of the Audiobook on Saturday May 20, 2023 @07:43AM (#36011057)
Thanks for sharing! This is something I'm interested in as well. There's also Piper TTS: https://github.com/rhasspy/piper

Quality seems fairly similar to Coqui-TTS, though maybe the intonation is a bit off.

I've generated a bunch of samples for comparison here: https://gitlab.com/danhawkes/piper-tts-test

Platform lock-in. Interoperability would not only be more costly in terms of the work to design and agree on a common standard, but it'd also makes it easier to switch to a competitor.
That search bar's part of the home screen app, which you can replace. Search for 'launcher' on the play store.
Re:ArchiveTeam Warrior backing up Reddit on Thursday December 16, 2021 @08:29PM (#29586578)
Wouldn't you want to validate it for the time at which it was served? In which case you'd just an archive of the CA roots at the time.
GP may be referring to anthropologist David's Graeber's book: "Debt", which refutes that idea: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6617037-debt
Irritating cookie popups are not mandated by GDPR; the opposite is true and most cookie popups are non-compliant with the legistration. If the ICO (UK regulator) actually did its job then this would be solvable under the existing powers, but it's done very little:

https://www.enforcementtracker.com/

Probably that it uses subcommands, e.g. git apply.

Comparing a recent web archive, the difference in the sponspors page seens to be:

  - Mozilla
  - Digital Impact Alliance
  - Google Season of Docs
  + RIPE NCC

Re:Show HN: Fast immutable URL parsing and resolving for Java on Monday February 06, 2017 @03:07PM (#13583352)
It's common to split example code into a separate sub-project so it doesn't get compiled into your release JAR.

See here for an example: https://github.com/gradle/gradle/tree/master/subprojects/doc...

Re:Does YCombinator have to use Google for captcha? on Wednesday December 30, 2015 @01:25PM (#10813419)
Whatever YCombinator is using to blacklist TOR users, it doesn't seem to include all exit nodes, all the time. I generally have decent success with `sudo service tor restart` to get a new exit node.
From being in the same position I've switched to soundcloud and mixcloud. They're not a true substitute in that they don't generally have the complete discography of artists as GS did, but they do have a decent chunk of it in mixes promos. On the other hand, both are better with respect to discovery, and mixcloud has something similar to user stations in that mixes are curated and tracklists are available (albeit in a silly manner[1]). Both are HTML5.

Re:The Internet of Compromised Things on Saturday August 08, 2015 @09:16AM (#10027146)
On how HTTPS sites are compromised:

> Compromised router answers DNS req for *.google.com to 3rd party with faked HTTPS cert, you download malware Chrome. Game over.

So this is a DNS mitm? Doesn't it still require the faked cert to be signed by a trusted root CA?

Re:Show HN: Curated – Find the best games on Android on Sunday June 14, 2015 @04:23AM (#9714189)
The f-droid app actually handles google play/amazon store links via the 'open with' dialog, so if it's installed deep linking should already work.

AUTHENTICATED CRYPTOGRAPHY PATENT NO.: 7,827,408

Message encryption and authentication are typically performed separately. In other words, a message is encrypted using one method and then a cryptographic hash of the message is generated using a second method. This invention is a device for and method of encrypting and authenticating a message and authenticating any additional information. The present invention provides a cryptographically stronger authentication method and is more efficient to implement, than the prior art.

VALUE: Provides combined authenticated encryption in efficient manner. Does not require random numbers, two encryption keys, or checksums.

Re:Manifold.js – Create mobile apps from websites on Monday May 04, 2015 @03:04PM (#9488312)
It looks like it's using cordova underneath (see 'community' page), so presumably there will be support for per-platform configuration of icons etc.

Re:Stetho: A new debugging platform for Android on Wednesday February 18, 2015 @06:20PM (#9071557)
It requires you to compile a proxy into the application:

    OkHttpClient client = new OkHttpClient();
    client.networkInterceptors().add(new StethoInterceptor());
Re:Apple’s Dev Agreement Means No EFF Mobile App for iOS on Wednesday January 07, 2015 @08:01PM (#8854440)
Unfortunately that looks to be the case. I had hoped they'd rolled their own push server implementation in the linked source (https://github.com/EFForg/pushserver), but it's just a wrapper around the GCM and APNS services.

It's disappointing, because both Android and iOS have support for periodically retrieving data without using the proprietary push services. It's not like the EFF is going to be delivering messages that have a 'real-time' requirement and therefore require a persistent connection (as opposed to say, Gmail/Hangouts).

Re:Fabric – Mobile developer platform by Twitter on Thursday October 23, 2014 @03:48AM (#8497096)
I share your frustration. All it does it install a framework in the root of the project, then add a build script that calls `<executable> <some ID> <some other ID>`. Boths IDs are available on the website, so you can set up crashlytics without using their stupid toolbar.

The framework's available here as a cocoapod: http://cocoapods.org/?q=crashlytics

Re:What I use instead of Google services on Tuesday September 02, 2014 @04:29PM (#8259960)
Excellent though it is, they're using MapBox, which really only caters for the embed-a-map use-case, and not general purpose browsing/route planning.
