Does this require physical access? Nowhere in the article does it say whether it does or doesn’t…

I checked Wiktionary but I was in disbelief that's labeled as a dogwhistle of a known fascist community[0] being used so freely here, so I gave you a benefit of the doubt..? I guess maybe it's not associated purely with them, but then it's not a valid or widely used phrase in English, so pardon my confusion..?

> Well, I've met enough developers throughout my career that were successful forever-juniors that I reckon it must be productive to somebody. And tokens may be "expensive computation", but those developers were more expensive still.

As someone who identifies with "rationalism", wouldn't you say this looks like bit of a selection bias on your side? Meanwhile the "ai race" to deploy the greatest boot-licking chat bot is having measurable and devastating impact on the environment and people? (And all that without tangible productivity gains, only with potential for long term loss thereof)

> 90% of everything was already slop. The simple matter is that in many fields, slop is enough to clear the bar, especially when that slop makes the unit tests light up in green.

Everything but pump and dump schemes (and perhaps other kinds of one-off fraud) has ongoing costs of maintenance, which slop tends to only increase. It was never nice to maintain things, but whether you keep burning tokens or hire actual expert devs to fix sloppy vibey mess, you'll be overpaying compared to if you put high effort from the start.

Re:The cost of getting a job today on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:26AM (#50101663)
Hmmm what if I do the assigned task without a chatbot? Will they even know…?
Re:Show HN: Use your OpenAI subscription to create audiobooks on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @11:15AM (#50073040)
If you put no effort into it, then it’s unlikely you can put any royalty claim on it either? But nobody’s gonna pay for it anyway so don’t worry.
Re:Decade-old RAM is making a comeback on Monday October 12, 2026 @11:59AM (#50058321)
I try to keep up with the tech, I also see what people do with it, but the amount of expensive computation you need to do very basic stuff just isn’t productive in any way. It’s random code generator with extra steps. Throw a junior at it, you’ll get a future senior. Throw a bot at it, you’ll get praised for your clever prompting, you’ll pay for tokens and have some slop in return. I can’t see how it’s productive to sustain a forever-junior?

Also, is “update your priors” some slang for “tell your parents”…? In that case, I can only say older folks are especially vulnerable to slop and I can’t imagine my parents would benefit from that tech.

Anyway, legitimate uses for chatbots are extremely niche, to the point I can’t really name even one such use…

Re:Decade-old RAM is making a comeback on Sunday October 11, 2026 @03:43PM (#50047054)
Well is there any productivity gain from chatbots? So far, I mostly see a deluge of misleading content disguised as documentation for things that don't even exist. If anything, the amount of slop out there is slowing me down…

I can't imagine it can even feel productive to anyone, unless you use agents to automate re-rolling your slop machines, but then you're just going to end up with an unmaintainable ball of mud. Either way, it's definitely net negative.

Kind of same outcome as if you just generated lots and lots of random code (perhaps at AST level; but don't tell your Claude, that'd trick it into making itself obsolete tech!) and compiled it in parallel till it passed tests, but this time around, the computer also tells you that you hit the nail on its head, that you're totally right <s>and that you're such a good puppy. agent uses tool `clicker`</s>

seems like the relevant plist keys are CarrierEntitlements (to be removed from plist) and APN type (to be OR'd with the tether enable mask) see here for example https://theapplewiki.com/wiki/Carrier_Bundle

(and BTW, you can find more in-depth articles by quickly googling that term in duckduckgo or elsewhere)

Re:Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video] on Saturday September 26, 2026 @04:38AM (#49854447)
Are you really so ignorant or just pretending to be? White replacement is a conspiracy theory with no basis in reality. You are not under attack. You are not being suppressed or silenced. DHH just doesn’t like people with skin tones darker than his own and who don’t live their lives as presented on nazi party’s propaganda posters. Statistics ain’t on his side. I’m just relaying what he said, if you don’t like that, take that to DHH. I do not endorse nazism.

And I’m not saying anyone’s opinions are wrong, I’m just saying calls to violence, such as DHH’s suggested deportations of people based solely on their skin color, are not opinions. Violence mustn’t be re-labeled as an opinion. Advocating for harming people or violating their agency cannot pass as political position, not even fringe one. You are free to have opinions, values and beliefs, but don’t think other people will be fine with that when your opinion starts affecting their lives. No matter what someone’s external appearance makes you think about a person, they also have opinions, values and beliefs.

(This just a short summary of what basic human decency is.)

Re:Rails World 2026 Opening Keynote [video] on Friday September 25, 2026 @11:16AM (#49845809)
How is DHH not a grifter? Is the white replacement conspiracy theory he promotes suddenly not a hoax?
Re:Spain Orders Blocks on Archive.today and Its Mirrors on Tuesday September 22, 2026 @04:45AM (#49798233)
One reason could be that they archive stuff that people want gone. Some of those people want their stuff gone more than the others.

Another reason could for example be tied to their identity, which we do not yet know, as they have not [yet] been doxxed.

(Also, idk what pronouns they use, some people in the thread seem to refer to them by "he", is that actually something they refer to themselves as on the record, or rather a typo or 'borken Engrish'?)

Re:Spain Orders Blocks on Archive.today and Its Mirrors on Monday September 21, 2026 @07:49AM (#49786063)
The ddos was against the doxxer. My "wires" ain't "crossed", I guess we just have different priorities. Idk what I'd do if I had reasons to fear for my life, so I can't blame the archive.today owner and the site still works as intended.

Overall, the hate campaign against archive.today is based on them messing with a doxxer, and I cannot morally support doxxing of anyone. So please, serve me the evil ddos version of archive.today when I visit, and I'll turn a blind eye. :3

Re:Spain Orders Blocks on Archive.today and Its Mirrors on Monday September 21, 2026 @07:34AM (#49785913)
Not a "beef", but rather some petty blogger spun up a campaign to dox the owner of archive.today, who you can imagine has their reasons not to publish their identity.
Re:I don't like passkeys on Friday September 18, 2026 @12:01PM (#49756340)
I can get another hw key (if one of mine breaks, which I, surprisingly enough, have not yet managed to achieve)

And since I have at least two at all times, the possibility of one of them breaking changes… not much really.

Paper can burn or get tossed, backups files can go corrupt, and I really don't understand what is that extra risk hw keys introduce…

There is at least one valid (in my opinion) reason to not like hw keys though: they cost real money to acquire, so you probably want an extra margin in your budget for the unlikely case they indeed decide to break.

Re:I don't like passkeys on Friday September 18, 2026 @10:37AM (#49755042)
How is that different from accidentally deleting your keepass database? Or forgetting your password? I think it’d be easier for me to forget than find myself trying to flush all my hw tokens…
The signing key? Sure, but it's not an SSH access key.
I think it depends on the context? It's in an ID card's design goals to be provably valid, so it's pointless to not publish its public keys, but something like SSH pubkeys, uhh, should I really be so eager to just publicly dump all of mine…?

Re:I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux on Thursday August 06, 2026 @09:47AM (#49196659)
Nah, DBus itself is plain bad interface design. Perhaps they could just piggyback off Binder if DBus itself weren't beyond saving. Also, despite a common sentiment online, it's not at all a complex process to implement a Binder userspace (given you have a sensible IDL in the first place, that is…)

Wrt/ torvie's narcissistic snarks linked above, the most important task for a kernel is still to facilitate fast IPC. The only viable forms of IPC in Linux are UDS and Binder. The former is slow and clunky. The latter is not a valid choice for DBus. So DBus devs have to manage slow, clunky, ill-suited legacy IPC. When a kernel can't be bothered to accommodate one of the most important operating systems built upon it, that seems really bad.

Re:I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux on Thursday August 06, 2026 @01:42AM (#49192907)
Every [Linux based] OS usually needs some sort of HAL to wrap [ioctl] driver calls into APIs that can be consumed by more than one process at a time. Nokia/Moblin/Sailfish use Freedesktop style HALs, i.e. stuff like Wayland, Pipewire, anything accessible over DBus (which also implies extremely slow IPC by any standards; mach ipc on apple's darwins is probably faster [sobs]).

Basically I'm suggesting that we might need a whole new OS on top of the Linux kernel.

Re:I'm switching my phone from Android to Linux on Wednesday August 05, 2026 @05:04PM (#49188989)
Switching from Android style Linux HAL to FreeDesktop style Linux HAL… I honestly think we need more Linux HAL options than just those two, when one is threatening to self-destruct and the other is arguably the single worst interface design ever conceived, by all measurements.

I think in this context it'd be any netizen who does not hold a significant amount of power to influence other [unrelated to them] netizens?

I don't use the dummy plug for display, it's only that consumer nvidia gpus won't have working 3D acceleration if there is nothing physically connected to the card. My dummy plug doesn't support the resolutions I run games at anyway.

EDIT: Ok, correction, I bothered to go unplug the dummy plug and it still works. So I was wrong, Sunshine does not need a dummy plug at all, not even on Nvidia. Now it remains a mystery why I have one in the first place if it's useless after all…

Now you try working with a fake in your head's place! :þ But yeah, real head (a monitor; doesn't have to be on) also works just as well, and even no head at all works, just won't accelerate 3D. Arbitrary resolutions also work. My only complaint with sunshine is that the webui authentication is really broken. Fortunately I don't need to go there much.
Nvidia GPUs refuse to accelerate 3D w/o an output connected; if I had a Radeon, I wouldn't need the plug, it's just an Nvidia thing I believe.

Afaict, Moonshine relies on a separate graphical session running on your monitor and that's how it gets around that limitation of Nvidia GPUs. If I had a monitor plugged in to my box, Sunshine would work just as well.

But Sunshine _is_ headless, I would know if it weren't, I'm using it as such (albeit with a dummy plug, but that's just a hardware limitation).

Wow, Firefox never fully loads the page, while WebKit fails to load it altogether, instead it displays "Operation was cancelled" in system font after a short freeze. I didn't manage to see the images change in any way as the post would suggest though, which left me confused.
