News for hackers. Stuff that matters.

Disable JS in 2025 does NOT work. Petty much every site only works properly with JS, with some exceptions.

JS is a core part of the modern web experience. 10 years go MAYBE Noscript would work, I never bothered, you end up having to whitelist a bunch of sites anyway even 10 years ago.

I wonder why I even come to HN? Political stuff is supposedly against the rules. Yet pretty much only left wing legacy propaganda media makes it to the homepage all the time.

Always NYT, Guardian and the usual suspects, always leftist stuff. Well of course Silicon Valley is infested with woke leftist BS, I should not wonder. I guess I am here for tech news and not politics, but it always comes up anyway.

I do not trust any study used by the guardian.

Just from the heading "far-right" already a buzzword to signal to the left who the "evil" people are. And who determined who is "far" right. In propaganda news, this term is used for 10 years or whatever to describe everyone who dares to have a single opinion that is not left. "Far-right" is now used to everyone who is actually just right (often double meaning).

The heading also says "the left" so did the study compare an actual small group of "far right" people vs "the left". What were the metrics used for saying someone is "far-right"? And if they actually made the group small, then OF COURSE they get the outcome they wanted.

Or did the compare vs the "far-left"? Let me guess, of course not!

Or did they just compare "the right" vs "the left" and the Guardian just calls them that in the headline.

I frankly do not really care, I do not buy this shit. If someone wants to tell me in the comments guess I care, but I am not looking at that study because I know the outcome was already pre decided.

Only dump people still read the Guardian and other legacy media.

// Bahahahaah "Dutch study of tweets by MPs in 26 countries" says someone in the comments. Yeah, it's even WORSE than I thought. See I do not even to look into shit like this, I already know from the stupid headline it's complete utter bullshit.

You make no sense, by your logic everyone should unlicense or https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/WTFPL everything. Basically just give up on any serious license because AI is going to steal it anyway. MIT makes no sense for what you describe.
Re:Drone footage of baby penguins jumping off cliff on Monday April 22, 2024 @01:29AM (#40111619)
Pretty cool, but what is "the secret".

First, the heading wording feels like intentional clickbait to make at least a portion of people think they might be jumping to their death, they don't!

They build something up like there is something coming, some actual reason WHY they do it from that high. But they totally failed on delivering any reveal, at least in the video, did not read the entire article.

They made up to be some giant mystery, and I was expecting there is some kind of great reveal thing that has some kind of benefit, something evolutionary or whatever something, - nothing - absolutely nothing. Basically because they did not want to walk down a long way I guess, if there even was a way to an easier jump.

"Privacy Friendly" advertising with a screenshot with a bunch of Google services on it. The irony is hilarious.
Re:Wikipedia Has Cancer on Saturday April 20, 2024 @07:16AM (#40096452)
Wikipedia's woke CEO just switched to NPR. She thinks the truth is getting in the way of getting things done, and we should not care about it anymore, its so 2024!

Wikipedia is used by organizations and governments to spread propaganda, its very own co-founder has said this because it's true.

Wikipedia does not only have Cancer, it pretty much IS cancer. It starts harmless with things that are simple not true and goes up to "reliable sources" bullshit that just considers all propaganda news orgs as "reliable source" and independent new orgs, blogs and whatever not. I mean, obviously not every blog can be a reliable source, but the system Wikipedia goes by was just always complete bullshit. Those who are the loudest, best funded, more corrupt, most ideological invested ... decide what "the truth" is on Wikipedia. On that sense, their ex CEO was right, but of course she did not mean it that way.

Did I miss the link or so they not have one to actually test this "pre alpha" version?

I would like to fire up a VirtualBox VM to try it out.

Re:Stop Acting Like You're Famous on Wednesday April 17, 2024 @05:05AM (#40062158)
I actually have the opposite problem. I think it would help me if I would act MORE like I was, well I would not say famous but like promoting stuff, talking about it. Marketing myself and by business, just "presenting" myself.

It does not help someone create the greatest thing ever in silence when nobody will ever know about it.

Re:David Lynch presents 'A Thinking Room' on Wednesday April 17, 2024 @04:59AM (#40062120)
I can totally believe that he does not really know what every single hint and stuff in his movies means, that he has a broader general idea and just loves to confuse people in a way. When I was young his movies just blew me away, sadly I think they would not do it in this way today anymore.

I am a big fan, but I think it's silly to hunt after every single detail and thing and try to find out "the truth" about what he really meant by it. Just enjoy the movies, have your own thoughts about it, and accept the fact that you will never know. It's a ride, just enjoy it.

Re:David Lynch presents 'A Thinking Room' on Wednesday April 17, 2024 @04:52AM (#40062074)
If you somehow end up here without having ever watched Mulholland Drive. I encourage you to watch it! It's my favorite movie.
This is horrible and very disappointing to read. But of course they cash in big time, selling themselves as the underdog and the good guys, all so caring about repairability for the super-duper premium price tag of course. But they can not pay people to keep up with software? Why is this kind of hardware even this complicated that the others need 14 and 13 bios updates? Seems like a shitty hardware choice in the first place for reliable laptops. Sound like they should have chosen more established and tested hardware, not some kind of new cutting edge shit or whatever this is that needs this much care and updates. Especially if they can not keep up with it.
Re:An Open Source Tool for Multimodal Fact Verification on Saturday April 06, 2024 @06:58PM (#39956452)
The name Loki is such a great fit! WOW!

This is some giant BS that is for sure. Some stupid, literally brain-dead AI searching things created by humans to determine what is a "fact". This is beyond dystopian crap.

We all know all the fact-checker orgs. used by big tech like Facebook and others are filled with hyper biased woke people who do not actually fact-check things but get off on having the power to enforce their beliefs, feelings and biases.

I can already tell this is total BS without even looking into it, what kinds of sources will it use? What ranking will they give them? Snopes? ROFL. Probably just uses some woke infested, censored and curated language model to determine a fact based on what has the most matches or THE MOST LIKELY because that how AI works. Has absolutely nothing to do with facts.

And it's even worse, we are literally in a time when AI hallucinates things that do not exist. I won't use a stupid AI to find me "facts".

Re:German state ditches Microsoft for Linux and LibreOffice on Thursday April 04, 2024 @09:08PM (#39937689)
Ridiculously silly to say. Because ONE recent security flaw in open source fucking M$ is better? That is laughable.

But yes, open source is used more by private users and even in government the hackers may target it more. BUT Linux is already in use for like 99% of the internet, all datacenters, everything runs on it. Every big company, even M$ is involved in it heavily, they have their own Linux called Azure Linux or something like that. So it makes zero sense to claim using some shitty close source software they want way too much money for is better. M$ 365 bullshit might as well connect to some online services run by M$ ON LINUX that have bugs exactly that you mention that somehow then also make it to users of office that connects to the net for no reason. I think it's some software as a service crap now.

Re:Bypassing Denuvo in Hogwarts Legacy on Tuesday April 02, 2024 @07:16PM (#39911894)
Yes, I did read what you wrote, and you wrote is as a rebuttal or a debunking of my factual statement.

> If you say "well I didn't mean AC" then cool, but I had no possible way of knowing what you mean, or what your cut off point is, "anymore" is not a very definitive point in time.

So because I not specifically mention any title, you just make it about yourself and what you are to have worked on ... that is an incredible cheap and dishonest excuse. "Oh you not specific X enough so I just assume you mean Y." Silly.

> You can of course choose to not believe me, it's the internet after all.

See, and STILL you assume or are so desperate that I suddenly choose not to believe you after I told you never I was obviously talking about old versions that were proven to have an FPS impact. Childish.

If I wanted to argue against that I would mock you for working with en engineer from Denuvo on it, hardly and bias there ;)

End if the day face is Denovo still sucks ass, even if you can not measure any FPS loss anymore, dev remove it after cracks/leaks or even just time passed for a reason that is not just money, its insane bloated shitty VM layer that slows down the games' startup, bloats the games executables up to insane sizes. Legit consumers hate it and want it gone.

And I am aware that certain idiots on Reddit and YouTube post fake videos of more up-to-date titles claiming huge FPS loses, and they continue to claim even recent versions of Denovo eats FPS because they just want it to be true so bad, or they actually compare different versions for games where It's not about the removed D but about the updated game. I never made any indication that I am like that, in fact I made it very clear that I am not. If you actually read what I wrote, it makes your answer even worse. You are just desperate. Go on Reddit r/crackwatch or something like that you will find plenty of people you can fight with, they won't take you working with an Denuvo dev on figuring out supposed facts serious either ;)

Re:Bypassing Denuvo in Hogwarts Legacy on Tuesday April 02, 2024 @02:43PM (#39909384)
> one of the recent Assassins Creeds

It seems you did not actually read what I wrote. I put anymore in caps for a reason.

I never said any recent AC title or any newer Denuvo version suffers from any FPS issues. The loading of games (startup only I think, not level loading) is in fact still very much impacted, especially in the first run.

So all what you wrote is pretty pointless. Denuvo in the past in fact slowed down FPS of games early on as it was making calls the slowed down FPS on every single frame. People did the testing of games after they got cracked, and the cracked versions ran faster.

Re:Bypassing Denuvo in Hogwarts Legacy on Monday April 01, 2024 @09:02PM (#39901254)
The devs removed Denuvo from Lies of P because they accidentally leaked an unprotected version. Basically the same is if it was cracked. No point to bug customers with longer loading times and the bloat that comes from D.
Re:Bypassing Denuvo in Hogwarts Legacy on Monday April 01, 2024 @08:58PM (#39901228)
The so-called "rumors" that Denuvo kills performance are not rumors. It's just not true ANYMORE. Older versions impacted performance heavily, but later on the performance impact became negligible.
Re:IrfanView on Sunday March 31, 2024 @03:02PM (#39887045)
Next time, try to not let your brain shut off when you read something you do not like. I never said it's comparable. I said it's enough FOR ME, I do not need anything like that. Likewise, I do not even know what the windows' viewer can do, I think it can rotate and save in a different format. I do not even need to rotate. I just need to view images, and if I really need to edit images I would fire up GIMP or try out Krita, but I do not. We just fail to see the need, I either just VIEW images or I want to edit images both ends have excellent tools, I do not need some middle ground tool.

Literally everyone else in this thread said the exact same thing, they do not use it anymore because nobody needs it anymore.

Speaking of out of sync: Enjoy your self-satisfaction in using some ugly ass looking outdated software that has 100 functions you do not use.

I did not really need a reminder that this website is filled with morons, just like Reddit. But I get it anyway every time I post something negative.

Remind me when anything more than a slap in the wrist happens. And my definition of slap on the wrist is adjusted to how big Meta actually is, they make more than some countries!

You just hate facts, just like the idiots on Reddit, I am supposed to praise big tech criminals and just make positive stuff up, then I get all the upvotes.

Here is what is going to happen:

1. Nobody will care in 10 days. 2. They will get a slap on the wrist at best.

Reminds me of Google driving around in StreetView cars, hacking and capturing all wifi traffic they could get their hands on. Did anything happen? Of course not!

https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2010/may/15/google-ad... https://www.wired.com/2012/05/google-wifi-fcc-investigation/

The guardian says "open" networks, apart from the fact that in 2010 networks were not secured by default in many cases. I think WEP 1 was a thing and easily hacked, and I would not be surprised if they were actually Wardriving, on the largest scale ever.

Re:IrfanView on Saturday March 30, 2024 @02:37PM (#39877439)
Ah, the nostalgia when Windows what so shitty that you actually needed a tool for the simplest of the simplest tasks of viewing images in all kinds of formats.

I see no need for it for myself as even Windows has a default image viewer that is enough for me and I mainly use Linux anyway and every decent distro comes with a tool for that. Gnome and KDE both have their own that fit into the DE perfectly.

Re:Is loneliness a threat to Germany's democracy? on Friday March 22, 2024 @11:20AM (#39791594)
Another idiot who can't read, I was speaking in generalities and the media. The political landscape has shifted so far to the left that what is centrist, or what was considered centrist like 5 or 10 years ago is called by "right wing" by the propaganda media all the time. It happens in the US as well. I never called the AfD centrist.

Stop reading and believing propaganda. Well, learn to read first I guess.

And the solution for Ukraine is to keep their promise to Putin to stay a neutral state and not get sucked into the starting point for WW3 by the US and NATO. The solution is to start talking to Putin and make a peace deal and tell NATO to fuck off. The solution is not to be "taken over". Putin only attacked because they were going to try to become and NATO member, something they explicitly said they would NOT do. But of course you know nothing about the history and are a stupid NPC who says. "Orange man bad.", "Putin bad."

I bet you still believe in the Russia collusion hoax. ROFL.

Re:Is loneliness a threat to Germany's democracy? on Friday March 22, 2024 @11:16AM (#39791546)
I assume you claim that I said the AfD is centrist. I never say that so you did not read or failed to comprehend.

What "unconstitutional act" is the AfD advocating for? German original source with quote or you are lying.

OK, there is a switch under "Advanced Settings" to enable GPU. Why the fuck is this no-brainer option off by default and "advanced"? Suddenly my 7B Model is shown as inactive and "start" does nothing, gives no error message either ... this is such an unusable alpha version.
Terrible user experience jumping into this so-called "Local first" app.

First thing it does is ask me for an API key, excuse me you fuck did you not just tell me you are "local first"?

Under "my models" is lists 4 models or so. How are they "my models". They show a size of "-" so they are NOT installed I guess. So how about you ask me to install a model after install instead of asking me for a stupid key. If I had a key for some OpenAI paid shit I can go to their website and do not need an app for that. I really do not get it.

I go to download Mistral Instruct 7B Q4 in the app. PC completely freezes for ages after download. Was about to reset as it unfreezes. I try out the model, and it turns out it runs on my CPU with heavy RAM usage and in INCREDIBLY slow! It took like 10 minute to answer a prompt. I have a 2080 Ti and official drivers installed in Ubuntu 22.04. I never ran a model, but AFAIK my card supports CUDA or whatever is needed and that these models should run on my GPU. Site docs show "coming soon" under "GPU Setup". And here I thought this is something I get easily jump into locally running AI.

Re:Is loneliness a threat to Germany's democracy? on Wednesday March 20, 2024 @04:17PM (#39771516)
Oh, another political propaganda trash article on HN. What a surprise.

Some fun fact, the "political extremists" they are talking about are pretty much anyone who dares to be even a centrist. The AFD. Alternative for Germany is pretty much the ONLY party of name in Germany who is actually FOR direct democracy, something all the other parties HATE. Because they claim democracy is what they think is right, and the actual citizens should never really have any decision over things.

The current thread to democracy are the parties who try to ban parties and call everyone a Nazi who dares to be centrist or right wing. As a German, I know what I am talking about. Politics on the last 20 years have shifted to the left so heavily that we are seeing a well deserve swing back of the pendulum.

Let's just indulge this "lonely people" causing it for a sec. If this would be true, MAYBE it's because lonely people spend more time on the internet and actually read and watch alternative media and come to an informed decision about that they want to vote and advocate for. They may detest their culture being replaced with other cultures they never asked for, maybe they want some kind of "Germany first" politics (I just made that term up). Instead of going into war with Ukraine, people want the resources spend on Germany. All the other parties are PRO WAR, even the left and the green party are voting pro war and military intervention and aid all the time. They send our money somewhere else!

And who caused lots of this loneliness? All the parties who they want us to vote for, they introduced draconian covid lockdowns that isolated everybody and put even families against each other. They did way more damage with their insane unjustified BS then covid could ever do!

Re:Lcl.host: fast, easy HTTPS in your local dev environment on Wednesday March 20, 2024 @02:41PM (#39770422)
Can you not use Letsencrypt locally? I think I actually saw something about that recently here on HN.

What is the difference between this and LE if true?

I would like to use a .test domain. I use that currently and just click "proceed anyway" whenever the warning pops up and It's pretty often lately.
