We're not talking about M-series Airs.

Haha, still no example links. The sad part is that you bothered to reply, but still can't back it up.

It's monkey-see-monkey-do language.

Another 2012 Air user here.

The battery doesn't hold a charge anymore, but as long as it's plugged in, it keeps chugging along.

I hope people know they can get a lot more for this amount of money.

Says the guy who provides no examples of an equivalent machine that costs less.

If you're going to be critical of Apple, at least provide a link to a Dell machine that's ugly, made of plastic, and has worse specs. It's HN tradition.

Re:New iMac with M6 on Tuesday October 27, 2026 @03:13PM (#50264269)
Do... people drag a full iMac to a public workspace like that?

I saw a guy with a Commodore PET at a coffee shop in Toronto once.

And more than once, I've been that guy with a TRS-80 at a Coffee Bean and Tea Leaf shop in Las Vegas.

A TV reporter who stopped in for coffee seemed interested in what I was doing, until he saw that I was just playing Monopoly.

After suffering a stroke, he was "put out to pasture", which for a journalist means he was sent to cover city hall meetings in some suburb. Eventually, he retired with some much smaller payout than what the last buyout would have given him. The sense in the family was that the collapse of the industry denied him a dignified last decade of work.

I think your dad did the right thing.

No, he didn't get the big dollar signs. But he did get a decade worth of health insurance, employment, and more security for his family than he would have had going out looking for a job on his own.

There are no good choices in that situation. But I don't think he made a wrong one.

Re:Somebody please stop the spam texts on Monday October 26, 2026 @05:05PM (#50250942)
If you reply STOP, you just let them know you read their text and it's a number that will respond with an actual person behind it.

You're thinking about e-mail unsubscribe links.

It's my understanding that, in the United States anyway, if you reply STOP, the phone number is blocked at the carrier level.

First it checks to see if "Stop2End" is in the body of the message

It checks to see if the sender is in my contacts

There's a chance someone in your contacts would send you a message with "Stop2End" in it? You must have curious friends.

"vertically integrated platform, combining Colossal’s enhanced genetics platform and secure biobanking capabilities of America’s top-performing dog arsenal, controlled delivery through cloning with best-in-class training and animal care."

Disgusting.

I can't imagine what horrors count as "best-in-class" care for frankendogs.

Re:CSS-Tricks has a new owner on Monday October 26, 2026 @01:53PM (#50247988)
Spoken like someone who's never actually put their art and soul into a mockup and asked an LLM to make CSS to match.
Re:Behind the scenes at the NeXT Computer office on Monday October 26, 2026 @10:11AM (#50244050)
working on truly new stuff, in person, with people who also care, looks like it was so much fun.

You can get a sense of what it was like in the film Real Genius.

In the film, it's college. But a lot of companies of the era weren't too different from what is pictured.

Like most LLMs, the links you cite don't back up what you wrote.

If you don't know the difference between preventing a group of sportsball fans from watching illegal streams and actually taking a country offline, delete yourself.

As Spain, Italy and now France are showing us though, states have no hesitancy to take the whole country offline to block just one piece of unwanted information.

The whole country of France went offline? When did that happen?

Re:Reforming English Spelling on Friday October 23, 2026 @05:18PM (#50215488)
Colonel McCormick actually got together with a bunch of other large newspaper owners to push the simplified spelling. Not for any kind of altruistic reason, but to save on ink and paper.

All these people who have pushed for simplified spelling since don't realize they're carrying water for another era's long-dead barons.

Like back when you could rent a Google appliance.
Other countries don't have this problem

Guess how we know you've never lived, worked, or read a newspaper in any other country.

Any software engineer shipping A.I. code should stop calling himself an "engineer."

Imagine the carnage if real engineers started vibe-designing bridges.

Re:Laptop Based on 6502 CPU on Sunday October 18, 2026 @11:35PM (#50148089)
Hardware didn't really play a factor.

Every machine ran BASIC. If your machine didn't, it was weird. For a while it seemed like BASIC was going to become the universal computer language.

IBM even produced a computer that had both AP/L and BASIC built-in.

Flash went away because Steve Jobs made an impassioned plea to find a better way and follow their humble browser which only had single digit percentages of marketshare at the time.

You're half right.

Yes, Jobs killed Flash. But he did it because Flash on mobile was a battery killer. And when the original iPhone came out (one of which I still have), battery technology wasn't as advanced as it is now.

Before I got my wife's hand-me-down iPhone, I had one of the few mobile phones that supported Flash. On the few occasions when I used the web browser, I lived in fear that I'd land on a web site that was using Flash because I knew it would tear through the phone's battery in less than 10 minutes.

Ever notice that the people on HN who pine for the good-ol'-days of Flash only remember games? Never the Flash ads and intrusive videos.

Jobs did the future a favor.

Imagine hiding a secret computer in a Beowulf cluster of espresso machines.
