Many say this cannot work.

... checking notes ...

Ah yes. China used to have 100% technocrats in their leadership 30 years ago. No one with a law degree in sight. Nowadays it is less, but they still have quite a few.

It can work.

Re:Why are good developers so wary of agentic development? on Thursday October 29, 2026 @12:28PM (#50291704)
Yes sir! 100 times this.
China has not threatened to invade Canada yet.
Faster than Shenzen, fine ... but quite a bit more expensive, even taking into account the USA tariffs, which we do not have in the rest of the world.

Seems to me that Shenzen still wins at least for the non-USA world.

Careful there... people who cannot even describe or define what communism is will tag you as a communist.
Cool... Would it be possible to poison all that nice telemetry with perfectly good information, live from Hogwarts or from some other interesting place? The Village from the series "The Prisoner" might also be a good place to send telemetry from.
Have you considered that Meta could simply be compromised by Meta's own Management, which leads to inference in the elections of foreign countries?

That is what seems to be happening here.

It is "non-lethal"!

Be happy you are just blind for the rest of your life.

Such a shitty government you have today in the USA, it boggles the mind.

Re:Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest on Thursday October 22, 2026 @12:53PM (#50197974)
Just pay a big enough fine to be a deterrent for the future.

A 1G$ per hectare seems a good deterrent for Google.

Here is the 300G$ bill.

Re:Google cleared 300 hectares of Finnish forest on Thursday October 22, 2026 @12:50PM (#50197911)
The big problem here is that if it is found illegal, the crime Google committed is irreversible. They cannot undo the damage done to the 300 hectares of forest.

What then?

Maybe a related question:

How do you keep the IEC 62443-4-1 auditors happy?

Maybe you can ask a similar question to the millions of people (literally!) who bought 2,000$ iPhone Duo devices in the last few days.

Spending a bit of money to save a bird's life seems inconsequential.

You forgot Gold Premium 2.0
Re:Redesigning Source Control at Anthropic on Tuesday October 13, 2026 @04:57PM (#50078632)
I guess Anthropic are not IEC-62443-4-1 compliant, because I doubt a human reads and understands every single line of those 30,000 merges a day.

What then?

Re:Why aren't AI companies being charged for hacking? on Monday October 12, 2026 @11:44AM (#50058093)
Great power must come with great responsibility.

Follow the responsibility chain.

Jail the CEO.

Re:Secret of Orange Cats Revealed After 60-Year Search on Monday October 12, 2026 @09:52AM (#50056489)
"Dumb as rock but excessively cute" ... Funny how that applies to some humans as well!
A dog will show you happy attention by wagging its tail, going all over you happily , roll around and be excited.

A cat? Slow eye blink.

(it's funny, laugh!)

In related news...

"Anthropic hires three uber-safety specialists formerly at OpenAI. Management cannot confirm or deny their latest internal Claude model's help in this feat."

Fortunately I am Canadian and enjoy my freedom to say "AI" ... like the rest of the world.
Not at all. Trump ordered everyone , during his speech at the United Nations , to use "SI" from now on, instead of "AI". That was one of his important priorities.

If you see someone use "SI" they are sending you a signal. Just politely correct their mistake.

You made a typo. The term used by practioners of the art and generally understood worldwide is "AI", not "SI"...
Re:America.gov – Whatever you need from government, start here on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @11:42AM (#49910450)
Totally!

That is why every CC country part of the Americas should start a government web site named america.CC and be done with it.

Re:America.gov – Whatever you need from government, start here on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @11:23AM (#49910195)
Canadian here.

America is not the USA. There' North America, Central America, South America.

This "america.gov" makes me feel weird.

Maybe we should have "america.ca" here as well.

Well...

I bought one of those some time ago.

Might interest the HN crowd...

Quoting the article:

"The team — brought together, in part, by disruptions and despair over the Trump administration’s freezes to federal science funding — then made an exciting discovery."

Apparently this is the new way of life for Scientists under the Trump regime.

Sad.

That "just" is quite the load-bearing seam ...

Particularly when the task here is "just" to measure some rod positions in a constrained 3D space ...

And all that expensive engineering is still less costly AND faster (!!) than a new software certification.

Cannot refrain myself from asking why ...

How much do you think it costs, in total, per prisoner today, per year?

Yeah. A one-shot investment of 10k$ per prisoner to avoid more manslaughter cases is peanuts, really.

Re:Meta VR Glasses on Thursday September 24, 2026 @08:37AM (#49829764)
Cool! Can I use them without any meta or facebook account?
