Re:Linux touchpad like a MacBook Pro, May 2020 update on Tuesday May 05, 2020 @12:17PM (#23081657)
You're absolutely right. We're still young, though, so yeah, don't completely discourage FOSS etc I have high hopes. And I would be glad for Mac's Apple's successes, I just am sure that FOSS etc will catch "up" too. We are still young. Let's prais both apple and foss, it's not a question about winning, it's just existing. It's so easy to not choose apple or mac, and, so easy for those who want to go into the apple orchards. And that is great.

As far as I've picked up, yes, but, not that matters in the direct software industries. Tim's got tons of connections though so I doubt he will starve. Tom Waits while Tim Brays.

Check out your email signature Tim Bray. Good luck onwards

EDIT: I might be totally wrong but I read somewhere he's friends with yes that guy.

Words run short some times. I know the history though, didn't mean to pin it as a conspiracy, but in desparate times, which I do not keep track of, things can happen, since I follow histories. Don't take this as a rebuke, is that the word, yeah, don't whatever man. <3 Who cares
Re:Bye, Amazon on Monday May 04, 2020 @07:37AM (#23066778)
He's not by far radioactive, and he's got tons of friend, including Tom Waits, and etc, he's got tons of contacts, and ephemerality my dudes, he can get jobs.

You know. But this was a f good post. Yeah. He's friends with Tom Waits, dudes, and tons of other people, he'll get jobs like hell.

Brave move though. I love you Tim Bray been reading the blog for ages it seems. Tim things up. Good luck onwards.

I'm really sorry, dang, I didn't intend to do that/it.

Good that you're noticing and monitoring, it was not my intents.

Re:Install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on MacBookPro14,1 on Thursday April 30, 2020 @02:04PM (#23033951)
We are stepping on each others toes; the initial OP or Grand-poster or whatever was about installing Ubuntu on a Mac, and that was the context I was replying into. So whatever. The OSX thing is great, for whoever it fits to, it is surely better than windows, W10.x and, etc, but, whatever, gp, grand parent, was talking about ubuntuin'g a mac, so what's his point. I get your point, about being all about the macs, but, this is an Ubuntu insertion. From his side. (((Arch by the way.))) Yeah enjoy your OSX. You've deserved it. And let's go on our ways. Or Rust on our ways, since the Go language is a piece of shit anyways. I use Rust. Since Go is a piece of shit, I mean.

I've upvoted your comment since we've clearly misunderstood each other. I don't think we're at disparity, the bloke tried to install Ubuntu on a mac after all. It's all good.

Re:What does the 'rc' in `.bashrc`, etc. mean? on Saturday April 25, 2020 @11:34AM (#22978859)
It means 'run commands,' I googled it for you.

Just google for "rc unix meaning", as I did. Have to acknowledge I didn't know it either. But now we all know. Good question.

Edit: more info here, https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Run_commands .

Re:Install Ubuntu 20.04 LTS on MacBookPro14,1 on Saturday April 25, 2020 @10:53AM (#22978548)
You'll get more "SCSI" when you buy macs, if you're a poser, at least, or a signaller, is probably more polite. 'You' is general of course, but, I think this is how it works. You'll be rolling in the SCSI with a mac, or if you plan to hang out with lots of bald men with the Steve Jobs kind of spiel, or something. I'd guess this is how it works. If any of those things are your thing, you should go for the mac, man.

But all that is a shitty landscape, opinions are mine. I meant no offense. But you see how things work out there.

Re:Disabling Snaps in Ubuntu 20.04 on Saturday April 25, 2020 @10:40AM (#22978439)
Totally agree, just have to report back that it's no huge'er job in terms of systems management. But am on your page. I guess it's relative, I was Ubuntu, too, because I liked the next-next-next ideology, but, when it comes to it, either system-types can be as maintenance free as any other. Rolling releases has the convenience of not being so difficult to upgrade, as you just roll along, you sometimes end up having to reinstall, on these systems like here, like Ubuntu and co I mean. But yeah work is what's most important. I've been a happy Ubuntu user for ages, glad you're getting your work done. It's all that matters relatively speaking. Thanks
Re:Disabling Snaps in Ubuntu 20.04 on Friday April 24, 2020 @05:17PM (#22972998)
PPA is hell. Arch is love and life.
Re:Disabling Snaps in Ubuntu 20.04 on Friday April 24, 2020 @05:16PM (#22972993)
Happy Arch and AUR user chiming in, a custody, or emigrant, from the F snap hell Ubuntu caused, and it's easy to verify and vet AUR content, if you care enough, the scripts are legible, readable, so it's just a matter of caring about your system. I agree, I am so happy about the Arch system since Ubuntu bit, ate wholehartedly, the snap bullshit. Thank fuck for AUR.
Re:The Making of Stunt Island on Thursday April 23, 2020 @06:35PM (#22962345)
Djeeah, guess we're fucking back-lashing, or backlash, as the title is and goes: enjoy https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wOG1p2DbDCI thanks corncob most valued person enjoy
Re:The Making of Stunt Island on Thursday April 23, 2020 @06:21PM (#22962246)
Backlash? Is that the title? Internal view, tons of cones, etc, pretty good gfx, fucking cannon shots out of your mouth/view. Backlash? The corncob person gave me memories. Loved backlash, it was fantastically graphic for its time.
Re:The Making of Stunt Island on Thursday April 23, 2020 @06:19PM (#22962220)
Corncob was the shit. What was that other Amiga game? With the cones, and everything, it looked like corncob, but it was something else. I bet someone knows. Good times anyways.
Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @05:55PM (#22962000)
It's most likely that I am totally wrong, they just told me it was some "Latvian" branch, Lituanian, so I don't know. I might be confused overall but it's good someone knows. Thank you.
Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @08:37AM (#22955255)
Yeah I was just being an asshole. Didn't really mean to thrash on ISS or anything. Just being dumb.
Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @07:25AM (#22954805)
Yeah I was probably just ignorant using dpkg, didn't know better. Thanks for the info.
Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @07:23AM (#22954789)
I'll enlighten you. About twenty years ago people used IIS for web-servers, encumbered in costly licenses, for everything, and progress goes on. That's the point man. Time goes on, and things gets better. Hope you see now. That was the point, anyways. I really hope it helps.

Progress goes on is just the general point. Nothing else intended. Should be clear enough.

Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @07:17AM (#22954747)
And it will take care of all dependencies? What if the repo packages are version < 2.4 or something, I have ran into that a tons of times. Yeah rather the AUR than the ppas to be frankly these days. I love Ubuntu though, as a general idea. Let's just hope it works sometime. Bit disappointing the last few releases. If it ever truly wasn't. Just gave up after 14.04. Tried to like it but I failed.
Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @07:14AM (#22954723)
More people are getting the Limp Larynx feeling such as you do. I had the same thought, especially after snap, and all. So I agree.
Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @06:55AM (#22954603)
Excel is a nice flight-simulator, it's just too bad it doesn't wear a miniskirt.

Edit: here's the procedures to activate a flight sim in excel 97 as I understand https://kb.iu.edu/d/agqw

You can fly around using your mouse or the arrow keys. The monolith lists Excel 97's developers.

Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @06:54AM (#22954596)
You always have the ppa's, one reason, except snap, itself, that I moved. Let's hope it picks up and improves. Right.
Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @06:50AM (#22954576)
I agree with almost everything you say, and, yes, people used IIS, windows, as webservers, only not-long ago, so, let's hope for progress. Totally agreed.
Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @06:34AM (#22954515)
huh how well does that work with individual downloaded *.deb packages? You're probably right, but, the included repos are usually full of outdated versions, if you get a too-new deb, from some experimental site, in terms of Ubuntu freshness, and then no pkgs in the repo will have a new enough version. (In terms of dependencies for the local exteriorally-gotten base pkg.deb and it's deps,) I guess ppa's are a thing, but, yeah, good to be off this train, no disrespects to Ubuntu, if it picks up I will surely be glad, and even, chances are slim, ever use it again. We're all friends, let's say yes to progress, in general, in the right directions.
Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @06:29AM (#22954485)
That's f'd up. Some people say the default settings for sandboxing [in respects of basic snap defaults or setups] etc are basically disabled some places. Hope that works. Bet the skin looks great. Most snaps I used long ago looked like a un-made-up pig to be frankly. I don't hate on snap, I obviously love it, or either I'd not wasted the time. Let's hope it improves. All improvements are great, obviously.
Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @06:26AM (#22954469)
The problem is, from a user perspective, when simple things as the included calculator is a snap package. I am biased and it's been a long time since I used Ubuntu or snap, but, you shouldn't need to be a hostage to sloppy snap-early-experiments, for the _calculator_, on an LTS release. This is long ago, and, let's hope these things have improved. And will improve. All progress is progress, let's hope for the best. Freedom is good, long live Ubuntu and snap. Right.
Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @06:18AM (#22954440)
One can dpkg -i , but, how about dependencies? I always had a problem with that. Whenever the app-store didn't work, which usually pulled-in all deps, I just naively used dpkg -i pkg.deb, and chased all the deps manually, through google. I have done that at least. Thank god for arch. No politics/"religion(s/*)" intended.
Re:Ubuntu 20.04 LTS (Focal Fossa) on Thursday April 23, 2020 @06:07AM (#22954381)
Yeah excel, outlook, etc, and their db-app, access, word, and photoshop, adobe, etc, will be tough beasts to either man handle or convince, I guess.

Looking forward to handle being a terminal app to install all of those things. Throw us some games too.

No manual entry for handle
