Re:Why Can't I Take an Orange Through Customs? on Thursday November 20, 2014 @12:36AM (#8634555)
The last paragraph is especially creepy. You can be treated as an animal, whenever they please.

So if you plan to take your laptop it is better to upload the disk image and buy a new one in the states? I'm assuming the TSA can force a foreigner to unlock and then copy the disk.

Wow this is sick:

Re:Half of stars lurk outside galaxies on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @03:35PM (#8632448)
I'm not talking about the time it takes, but the mass of the fuel. Which is more than just doubled.

That is what equations tell you: http://math.ucr.edu/home/baez/physics/Relativity/SR/rocket.h... ( scroll to How much fuel is needed? )

Re:Half of stars lurk outside galaxies on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @03:18PM (#8632352)
And the last paragraph is the main problem. The ship would get torn apart from lone atoms and to actually stop yourself you need an exponential amount of fuel, because you need to accelerate ( much more than )half of it just to stop yourself.

Even if you protect yourself from relativistic atoms, they still create a drag. And that happens before you reach 0.99c.

Re:Show HN: Axis - a React.js multiplayer math game on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @03:06PM (#8632289)
Just impose rules that are trivial for humans to solve reliably and not for computers.
Re:Show HN: Axis - a React.js multiplayer math game on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @01:35PM (#8631731)
Copy paste is disabled remember...

As for the rest, that is up to the developer with more resources than his opponents.

Re:Object Oriented ANSI C (1993) [pdf] on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @01:14PM (#8631595)
A full chapter is dedicated to dynamic type checking.

If that isn't acceptable for your project, don't use it. Successful languages that don't have compile time checks, show that this problem is irrelevant.

Re:Show HN: Axis - a React.js multiplayer math game on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @01:06PM (#8631551)
You can always make the game itself harder on top of all the anti-bot tricks.

The game has to be only hard and expensive enough to hack so that the effort isn't worth the result.

Of course with unlimited resources you can pretty much solve anything, if you assume those, then everything is easy to solve. But assuming that is simply ignorant.

Re:Show HN: Axis - a React.js multiplayer math game on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @10:12AM (#8630417)
There are simple ways to make that very hard. The first one is to remove copy paste.
Re:Show HN: Axis - a React.js multiplayer math game on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @09:23AM (#8630118)
It is crashing all the time, it should be back soon.

Even with all that I still keep coming back.

Re:Show HN: Axis - a React.js multiplayer math game on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @09:05AM (#8630032)
But it almost impossible to write a polynomial in under 60 seconds without any tools, that follows the desired path.
Re:Object Oriented ANSI C (1993) [pdf] on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @08:51AM (#8629955)
That is a very limited system without real polymorphism.
Re:Object Oriented ANSI C (1993) [pdf] on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @06:19AM (#8629384)
It has a very high learning curve. And while it has great ideas, the usage of variadic functions is not warranted in my opinion.

I recommend you first try a simple OO project yourself.

Re:Show HN: Axis - a React.js multiplayer math game on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @04:32AM (#8629038)
Agreed, functions should be continuous and no step functions.
Re:Show HN: Axis - a React.js multiplayer math game on Wednesday November 19, 2014 @04:29AM (#8629035)
Really great idea, too bad it freezes almost every game.

I think it just died...

Re:Milk Might Not Be Doing You Much Good on Monday November 17, 2014 @06:33PM (#8621493)
Sugar is the best and fastest source of energy found in the nature. We are programmed to like it and remember when we ingest it, and that behavior is rewarded by feeling good.

A lack of that feeling will make you feel less good. Experts say it takes up to a month for that imbalance to normalize.

Great talk about it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aWLnlhLNa28&feature=youtu.be...

Re:Milk Might Not Be Doing You Much Good on Monday November 17, 2014 @06:23PM (#8621418)
You have to be careful even with fruits with high sugar amount. But it is harder since the digestion is slower and you get full faster.
Re:Milk Might Not Be Doing You Much Good on Monday November 17, 2014 @06:09PM (#8621344)
Every day with cereal for months now. I'm doing great, no problems whatsoever.

You should switch from sugary drinks to water and fruit. It takes about 3 weeks to adjust. ( and avoid chocolate milk )

Re:Source code of Polish electoral voting system? on Monday November 17, 2014 @05:28PM (#8621117)
I don't know, I wouldn't judge a decompiled code.

Can you give a few examples why is it so bad?

Re:Show HN: SineRider, a game inspired by my TI-86 on Monday November 17, 2014 @02:18AM (#8617200)
Thank you! Game of the Year!

I wish I had this in school. This might just spark a new interest in pure math for me.

...

I think I broke it: y = x^2 / ( 6000/t^(t*t) )

After a year of acceleration at 1g, a stationary observer would observe a speed of 215184620 m/s or 71.7% the speed of light.

After two years: 89.9%

After four years: 97.2%

After eight years: 99.3%

Fun fact, from the perspective of the observer on the ship, time outside the ship would also appear to slow down.
lfuller is right.

For example, if you have a ship capable of continuous acceleration at 1g, you can reach any point in the universe on the order of ~50 years.

C:

Manual memory management can get tiring. Only if you don't exercise.

String handling is manual memory management. See above. See above.

The support for concurrent programming is anemic. Introducing C11 and OpenMP!

Terribly named standard functions: isalnum, fprintf, fscanf, etc. Beauty is subjective.

The preprocessor is the best thing ever.

Not feeling your smartest today? Have a segfault. Can I have another?

Lack of good information when segfault occurs... the "standard" GNU toolchain doesn't tell you the causes of segfaults in the standard runtime. Enable debug mode.

If that code is legacy, you're in for two days of not looking like a hero. Luckily there are 137 alternatives.

:-)

It is easy if you have antigravity.

On a side note, I was surprised at his attempt at a romance novel. I was pretty good, but too long.

Re:Is Quantum Entanglement Real? on Friday November 14, 2014 @11:48PM (#8610863)
That does not work because light speed has a limit. It is true that the photon does not experience time. Imagine a photon traveling a distance of 1 light year towards us( we are stationary). In it's reference frame it will do so immediately but in our it takes 1 year. For the photon to travel to us in zero time in both frames, the speed of light would have to be infinite, which we know it isn't.
Re:Is Quantum Entanglement Real? on Friday November 14, 2014 @11:41PM (#8610843)
I wish you comment were downvoted instead of karmakaze's one.

He is expressing an opinion and even if he is wrong, it is still an interesting idea, and shows some effort. A decent short explanation could show the mistake, and make a good comment->answer combo.

Instead you quoted a comment which is out of context ( Feynman's comment is intended for physicists of his level ), contributing nothing.

( Please don't take this as a personal attack ( it isn't), but more a thought what's wrong with HN in light of recent debate )
