Re:The End of Scientific Linux on Monday April 22, 2019 @05:22PM (#19723124)
Even for scientific uses on Infiniband clusters, we used Rocks (which deploys CentOS or RHEL). There wasn't a compelling advantage to using SL, except the year or two about a decade ago when CentOS was in chaos.
Re:Crystal 0.28.0 Released on Friday April 19, 2019 @02:33AM (#19697517)
Been using Crystal on a project that would've been written in basic Ruby.. productivity is amazing. And it has generics! :D https://play.crystal-lang.org/#/r/6r3e

How to get Crystal 0.28.0 on macOS right now! :

    brew install https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/homebrew-core/ca8f21cd49a936bf154235b365fa23929f9f688d/Formula/crystal.rb
    # or: brew upgrade https://raw.githubusercontent.com/Homebrew/homebrew-core/ca8f21cd49a936bf154235b365fa23929f9f688d/Formula/crystal.rb

    # start the local playground
    crystal play &; open http://127.0.0.1:8080
A multi-language, remote debugging/metrics-first/featherweight-processes JIT platform like BEAM/HiPE targeting ia32/e, arm that can run as a process or an unikernel... written in a compiled language (C subset, C++ subset, Haskell, Rust, Crystal).
Any style or substance signal(s) in particular, i.e., lots of personal pronouns?

Nice! Reminds me of crystal[0], the LLVM-compiled ruby-alike language.

After watching Louis Rossmann's live repairs and informed bitching, I bought an almost maxed-out Lenovo T480 on the President's Day sale and hackintoshed it. Water-resistant, backlit keyboard that's awesome and isn't crazy loud/fragile. 16 GiB, WQHD (could be brighter), Samsung 1 TiB 970 Pro and giant extended battery. 9 hour run-time. MIL-spec rated.

EDIT: I had a pre-Retina A1278 mid-2012 MBP with 16 GiB and 2 SSD's for a long time. MagSafe 1, okay keyboard, generally bulletproof for a while until the external ports and logic board traces started corroding from humidity and temperature extremes. :( I bought a broken screen MBP for $170 USD to get a working logic board cheap to recover and migrate off. Donated to a sane-but-poor itinerant writer/journalist/commercial fisherman.

Re:A physics master’s degree opens doors to myriad careers on Thursday April 18, 2019 @10:54PM (#19696727)
In general, physics majors tend to be badasses.

I know of people in a myriad of tech careers: site-reliability engineer, MBB management consulting, QA, offensive security.

A home in Palo Alto costs 3.5 megabucks, but without Prop 13, property taxes are around 85 kilobucks/year. Over 30 years, assuming 2.5% inflation, that's another 3.8 megabucks just to stay in said house. And add basic cost-of-living, say 40 kilobucks/year, adjusted for inflation over 30 years would be 1.8 megabucks. Throw in an extra million for miscellany (3.5 + 3.8 + 1.8 + 1.0), a net balance sheet (after maturation of investments) should target around 10.1 megabucks to stay in Palo Alto if not splurging. It's possible to move elsewhere in the US and only need around (0.5 + 1.8 + 1.0) 3.3 megabucks. (Assumes buying a house for cash right now.)

EDIT 0: Refactored using inject()

EDIT 1: An engineer salary of 200k inflation adjusted over 40 years is 13.5 megabucks.

[Buy it now] Whoops! :X

(Now accepting donations.)
