Re:US boy names that became girl names and vice versa
on Monday November 02, 2026 @11:28PM (#50348080)
Surprised Madison isn't on there as a boy name that became a girl name. It was a traditionally male surname (eg Madison, Wisconsin, the state capital, was named after James Madison) until the 1984 movie Splash, where a woman has to make up a name, looks around, sees a street sign for Madison Avenue, and says her name is "Madison". That was understood to be a joke at the time, akin to someone calling themselves Broadway, but because of that movie it quickly became a popular female given name. Personally when I was choosing my name, it came down to between Madison and Madeline, and the traditional masculine association of the former tilted me towards choosing the latter

Yes, this is why my opinion is that in politics, the ends absolutely do not justify the means, because a broken system that produces the right answer is lucky, and a working system that produces the right answer is... working as intended

When you're just starting out in a system, every incident is a novel, never-before-seen issue. That's putting aside existing sources of knowledge like coworkers and runbooks of course, but I've had to do "software archeology" on lots of stuff because coworkers are gone and docs are wrong. But that's where you build up that intuition, like how the company typically builds things, how deployments usually work, what's that terrible load bearing service installed 10 years ago and not updated since, etc. Yeah every T3 incident eventually is novel, but being able to cut out the non-novel parts helps a lot
Re:The importance of communities around software
on Thursday October 29, 2026 @04:37PM (#50295539)
A community _will_ form around any piece of software with enough users and developers, regardless of if it has a code of conduct or not. And communities will almost inevitably develop community standards and cliques. The code of conduct simply formalizes that. Someone who gets kicked out of a community with a code of conduct is equally likely to get kicked out of a community without a code of conduct
And besides that, someone can always make their own community around FOSS software. Fork and move on. But the new community will compete with the old, and it's possible that the fact that people stay with the old community means that they actually prefer that community

I don't think most Japanese media is as concerned with fitting things into a canon as much as American media is. Like, in Gundam, you have 0079, Thunderbolt, and Origin all allegedly in the UC canon, but there's pretty significant deviations in Thunderbolt and Origin from 0079 so they're not really the same timelines. American comics will also have multiple timelines or universes, but they'll make it clear which one each individual series goes with, and have crossover events explicitly acknowledging the existence of the different canons. Japanese media doesn't tend to do that, and I think trying to fit it into a coherent timeline is a fool's errand

Yeah I think the difference ultimately is the API surface of infra versus app software. If you're developing software, you get to contain and abstract everything into your own vision of how things should be done with types etc. But infra is managing a whole bunch of other people's software, each with their own vision of how things should be done, which means that often things just fall back to the least common denominator, plain ASCII

It's a way for the wealthy to feel like they're doing good by collecting money. They tend to twist the tenets to favor "what you're currently doing is good, actually" even if "what you're currently doing" is itself unethical, like modern adtech. The stated goals and principles of EA are one thing; the actual practice of it is another

Re:Silicon Valley Is Transforming the Military-Industrial Complex
on Thursday September 10, 2026 @09:14PM (#49652331)
As others noted, Silicon Valley was formed by the MIC. But there was a period there for a while where defense contracting was uncool so no VCs funded it. Then in the wake of Trump winning in 2016 all of the politically conservative VCs (who generally hadn't been advertising their political views) got to reveal that they loved the military and funded anyone with the vaguest idea of a military-focused product. Meanwhile from the other side, US military procurement has always been obsessed with corporate America, and had long tried to court startups in vain. When finally there were startups for them to throw money at, those startups quickly became massive regardless of if their products were actually worth anything (cf Anduril)

Re:The many mysteries and lessons of the Bayeux tapestry
on Sunday September 06, 2026 @03:11PM (#49589774)
The tapestry is really neat as a piece of... propaganda, for lack of a better term. I don't mean that negatively, but just that that's the closest term that I can think of for it. I saw it in Bayeux a couple years ago and was struck by how it's written almost like a comic book so that the general public (illiterate at the time) would be able to learn this history. Like, of course, history written by the victors, the tapestry's not necessarily the truth, but just the techniques used to convey its message almost a thousand years ago were surprisingly similar

Yeah I'm using 5 for its technical abilities, but I much preferred 4.6's personality. 5 loved to double check everything, including the double-checks, and I have to stop it and tell it "this is irrelevant" or "this is out of scope" all the time, or sometimes I'll go leave it to do a task and come back and it's still verifying the tiniest details of its assumptions before actually doing anything

About the only thing that regularly wears out is spinning drives, and those have SMART data to give you an idea of when they'll die, but generally yif you're actually committing to high uptime you'll have redundant hardware so any one server failing doesn't take the service down, giving a bit of a grace period on hardware failures

Hey, good luck! I've had some depressive episodes where I couldn't do work or even good off for a good week or so, but I'm privileged to have not been chronically depressed and need medication (I have others issues and working on those have prevented episodes). Going to therapy was the best decision of my life, and this year I've progressed enough that I put in almost 100 hours over 7 days for one critical project (which isn't something you should be able to brag about lol, but I'm proud of myself; a year ago I would've had a breakdown on about day 2). It's a journey though, and you'll have good weeks and bad, so just keep in mind that even if this week seems bad, next year's gonna be great!

Re:GTA 6 will cost $80

Generally it doesn't make sense, but in this particular case the servers are going ti be so overloaded with people trying to download it that it might be worth it to preloaded the game. Now of course they're probably going to have separate author servers that will probably also be overloaded with everyone trying to login at once (why does a single player game need you to log in first? good question!) so imo you're probably going to be screwed either way
