I didn't realise you weren't the guy from earlier, so fine.

I am not shrieking, I'm cool a cucumber. In general I try to avoid this subject because of how divisive it is and because the loudest voice in the room is the one decrying the subject despite all evidence to the contrary.

It is absolutely reddit-tier to say "grass isn't actually green because these two people say so" only in this case the grass is behind an abstraction that requires a bit of minor gathering and analysis, yes my own analysis counts for nothing I am aware, but I encourage everyone to do it themselves, the data are free and ubiquitous.

Do I see myself as HN? no, but evidently the original guy sees himself pushing back against the tide of uninformed HNites without realising what that actually implies.

Not nonsense, not debunked, not shrieking. Muddying the waters? maybe but I'm fed up of this fucking stupid shit popping up every other week on here and having sandal-clad neo hippies and anti-science right-wing fruitcakes sperging out.

Politics has nothing to do with it, it's about data.

I'm right of centre and think RFK is a fruitcake, I have no idea how the guy above is aligned politically but I do know he doesn't know wtf he's talking about.

How was I debunked, by you, the amateur using a paper by a psychologist and a nutritionist because you cannot do the work yourself?

Maybe HN isn't for you, Reddit's probably more your speed.

Aspartame is absolutely relevant to the discussion, but here especially because you broadly accused HN of being anti-science on this subject, I want to know your stance on aspartame to know how thought out your position is on UPFs or if you just consume the literature unquestioningly, I'll assume from your avoidance that you would answer in the affirmative?

On the contrary, I'm using the same data (including the monteiro set) as the cult and reaching different conclusions, alas I'm not published so if you want to see reality you'll need to do the analyses yourself if you're capable.

You seem exasperated by HN's general reaction to UPF myths and fables because you've previously been shown up on the same alarmist nonsense.

No answer on the aspartame question?

I'm staring at the scatter plots right now.

Mortality Europe: Sweden, Norway, UK, Finland, Belgium, Austria, Germany, all the highest consumers of UPFs and by far the longest lived, France somewhat on the fence for UPF consumption only at 30%, Malta and Switzerland comparable to France for longevity and UPF consumption.

Croatia, Lativa, Hungary, Estonia, Romania, have the lowest consumption and the shortest lives. Cancer incidence rate is lowest in Sweden - the country in Europe that consumes the most processed foods, cvd deaths (and incidence rates) peak in Romania, Hungary, Lithuania, Slovakia, heart disease is the same story but we add in Czechia (30% of diet is UPF like the middling France group).

Stroke deaths lowest in Ireland, Norway, UK, Austria, Switzerland, highest (by miles) in Romania, Latvia, then Croatia, Lith.

Romania has relatively low blood pressure (survivorship bias?) but again it's the same story, rich countries have it better despite high UPF consumption.

UK and Ireland are admittedly pretty fat, but so are Greece, Slovenia, Cyprus and besides Sweden, Norway, Germany, Netherlands are not.

Even these diseases of affluence are uncorrelated on a national scale, you are being fed a lie that seems palatable because it makes sense on paper that "weird chemicals must be bad for you" you cultists are indistinguishable from RFK to me.

Lets see who is anti-science, do you believe aspartame leads to cancer?

no it is an identical plot on the graph, not an overstatement at all.

The standard of living for the median worker has improved significantly in forty years let alone two hundred, lifestyle inflation is definitely rapid as you would expect with progress, wage growth has outpaced inflation for everyone but public sector workers.

Bad as things may seem now, we are all richer than ever before.

>The more someone’s diet falls on the ultra-processed end of the spectrum and the less they eat of unprocessed foods, the higher the rate of health problems.

False, based publicly available data, even data pushed by the UPF cultists there is no correlation between UPF consumption and 'Life Expectancy at Birth', 'CVD Deaths per 100K', 'Heart Disease Deaths per 100K', 'Cancer Incidence Rate per 100K', 'Stroke deaths per 100k', '%age Population with High Blood Pressure ISCED standard', 'Mean Systolic Blood Pressure (mmHG)', or shockingly 'BMI'.

In fact, in some cases there is an anti correlation such as life expectancy, now it would be absurd to suggest UPFs increase longevity of course but the reality is richer countries eat more processed foods and richer countries live longer.

as I said if you remove china from the data the trend is identical.

But regarding China specifically it has been the gradual transition to a more market led economy.

>or at least not in the selfish sense

Wasn't a requirement, self interest doesn't imply malice.

>capitalism only allows selfish self-interest to flourish

How's that then?

>Capitalism is a form of authoritarianism in that it really only serves a few

You're cooked, market liberalisation has led the world from >80% in poverty to <10% in under 40 years, even removing huge entities like China.

I stopped using Perl in the early 00s but I've heard rumours, how bad was it?
Re:Python Grew from a Language to a Community on Monday August 04, 2025 @05:59AM (#44783778)
because you like the drama? It is quite entertaining but so tiresome.
Re:Python Grew from a Language to a Community on Monday August 04, 2025 @04:30AM (#44783267)
Drama driven development is the truly modern paradigm, and if you think it's limited to Python you're blind.

It's not community, it's meddling, toil, and folly.

Bread can be rationed but cannot be hoarded.
there is room, bear in mind such a device need only provide minute advantage for it to be significant.
But the substance of the post appears to be word-salad and I've already had my five-a-day.
My god El Reg has fallen off, that was the worst article I have ever read.

Game looks really fun but I would love it if it required the player to configure an agent driver, then you could have global leaderboards etc.
Re:Major Rule About Cooking Meat Turns Out to Be Wrong on Thursday July 24, 2025 @05:00AM (#44668579)
it's funny watching cooks and amateur chefs come to the same conclusion that professionals reached over one hundred years ago, I assume nobody asked, but with steak for example you use resting in a controlled environment to ride the temperature up to chosen doneness, nobody has ever (to my knowledge) thought it to do with preserving juices.

and another delicious L for James Lopez.

Being a pilot is an epistrocratic privilege and they should welcome the input of the less advantaged.
it is truly excruciating
Re:The Genius Device That Rocked F1 on Monday July 21, 2025 @04:30AM (#44632958)
DRS directly dictates track behaviour, and the rules around track position have effectively killed the idea that "If you no longer go for a gap which exists you are no longer a racing driver", because doing so would run counter to the rules.

It even feels like you have to wait a few days post race for the FIA to decide who actually won.

Whenever I watch WEC or Rally I'm reminded of what real racing is, the comparatively light touch the FIA have with those series has led to much more exciting sports.

Re:I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022) on Thursday July 17, 2025 @11:36AM (#44594510)
it has a few dings on the frame and I'm not especially attached to the form factor more significantly I am addicted to it and need a viable alternative.
Re:I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone (2022) on Thursday July 17, 2025 @05:53AM (#44591530)
I'm still using a 13 mini, it's fractionally too large, I think the original SE is perfection.

Regardless, battery life is horrendous now, and it's starting to lag and fail so when the new ultra watch is released I'm going to replace my phone with it.

async scales better than sync in this context as on larger teams you might need a queue.

Re:Continuous Glucose Monitoring on Monday June 30, 2025 @04:28AM (#44420816)
I think it's definitely geek-bait, I wore one for a few months and would say that unless you have diabetes/pre-diabetes it's a waste of time.
Re:Continuous Glucose Monitoring on Monday June 30, 2025 @04:24AM (#44420798)
as someone who eats relatively healthily but has no problem consuming processed foods (but tends to avoid excessive sugar), when I wore a cgm out of curiosity it was very clear that such a device offered me nothing, as a non-diabetic, non-pre-diabetic person the data showed that the body responds in line with input never exceeding tolerances.

It was impressive just how uninsightful it was, I love quantifying my workouts, my nutrient intake, etc, but the cgm added absolutely nothing.

I have kids and this post is the first I'm even hearing about it, but you're right I'm not rushing to the cinema, remortgaging my house only to surround myself with feral kids, I'll wait until it hits Disney Primeflix.
