It’s almost like they’re a professional writer…

> If an individual site took on the infra challenges themselves, would they achieve better? I don’t think so.

I’m tired of this sentiment. Imagine if people said, why develop your own cloud offering? Can you really do better than VMWare..?

Innovation in technology has only happened because people dared to do better, rather than giving up before they started…

Re:Last Week on My Mac: Losing confidence on Tuesday December 02, 2025 @12:01AM (#46117760)
> Mac hardware, on the other hand, has never been better than it is right now!

I thought the same until trying a framework laptop with Ubuntu. Mac is the “IBM” choice, no one gets fired for choosing it, but quite frankly there’s better options these days.

Nope, close to 300 actually…

Do you have a tutorial that you like?
Re:Immutable Software Deploys Using ZFS Jails on FreeBSD on Saturday November 08, 2025 @12:04AM (#45854294)
Hacker News serves +4M requests per day using nothing but two FreeBSD servers…

Money is a measure of power, but it is not in fact power.

Re:Tor browser removing various Firefox AI features on Thursday October 16, 2025 @12:01PM (#45607061)
GNU Emacs actually self funds from the essence of the universe. You can launch that feature with the command `C-x b r r r`

> No idea. But curious- why would something that was published a decad or longer ago not be of interest today?

Because if it isn’t in the “hype” it’s worthless, obsolete, trash…

Welcome to the new world of tech, that warms its hands by burning the old world.

Enjoy the vibes…

> It’s honestly kind of sad. Google could still print money without the endless spying…

They literally couldn’t.

Wow, a phone with a battery that's so bad, they're selling an extra one to strap to the back of it, on launch day... The most innovative thing that Apple has done recently is figuring out how to have their CEO deliver a gift wrapped gold bar to the president. [1]

This is such a beautiful piece. How did you learn about it? How does one get further into this world?

> The public is not conscious of how big of a deal the war in Ukraine is.

My sincerest desire is that there’s a peaceful resolution to this conflict before they’re forced to realize it.

Re:Amazon has mostly sat out the AI talent war on Monday September 01, 2025 @07:11PM (#45097431)
That’s because LLMs are just snake oil… Look at what a flop ChatGPT 5 was. If someone manages to actually make something useful, Amazon has a stake in Anthropic. Otherwise why should they waste their money while competitors bankrupt themselves at scale over a hype cycle.

> The rebuild will likely end up easier, IMO, because the screens and the logic is all done. Most of it just has to be moved to strict backend and then have the APIs secured correctly.

How to draw an owl…

Step 1. Draw a circle. Step 2. Draw the rest of the owl…

> People really want to bring down the growth of the USA's software industry to EU level.

The EU is the only place hiring software engineers right now. Everyone in the U.S. just keeps laying them off.

10% is the time it works 100% of the time.

Amazing, California can build a wildlife bridge, but god forbid they build higher density housing.
And JDM badges.
And yet he double downs on the troll… Style points for the David Carradine reference though.
This must be a god level troll post.

> Hell, I'd love to learn more about the hardware hacking the OP is talking about. Love to learn about those GPU hardware modifications people do. I know it's hacker news, but I'd actually love to learn about that hacker stuff.

This, I feel like ever since the fall of Twitter, a true hackerspace has been missing for awhile.

Re:Chomsky on What ChatGPT Is Good For on Sunday May 25, 2025 @01:52PM (#44089501)
> It can help us, just like a calculator can help us solve an equation.

A calculator is consistent and doesn’t “hallucinate” answers to equations. An LLM puts an untrustworthy filter between the truth and the person. Google was revolutionary because it increased access to information. LLMs only obscure that access, while pretending to be something more.

> It's frankly bonkers how many insane success-at-long-odds stories NASA has and how few "we made a stupid mistake and everything exploded" stories NASA has.

That’s what happens when engineers are allowed to engineer things, rather than being forced to “move fast and break things”.

Re:Optimizing My Hacker News Experience on Monday May 12, 2025 @12:10PM (#43964603)
I don’t understand why people want to so aggressively distance themselves from the source of truth. I’m not sure folks appreciate what they’re giving up, when they’re willingly summarizing and wholeheartedly consuming content that may or may not be entirely fabricated…
Re:Run LLMs on Apple Neural Engine (ANE) on Saturday May 03, 2025 @10:11PM (#43883943)
Yet Siri is still dumber than a doorknob…
This is cool, but you can buy a 3 year old used model 3 right now for close to $25k that has 300+ mile range. The model 3 also has, wait for it, a/c and speakers…
