At least "cognitive surrender" sounds catchier and more academic than "stupid on purpose".

Thanks for clearing this up. I felt/feel the same, but could never get it into words.

Beautifully spoken, thanks for clearing this up. I felt/feel the same, but could never get it into words.
Re:A tiny Pacific country rolls out universal basic income on Sunday November 01, 2026 @07:31AM (#50325002)
Come on, read it again. You know what the word 'universal' means, so stop playing stupid.
Re:Show HN: Swurf – Swipe through the real web on Friday October 23, 2026 @04:32PM (#50214924)
Reminds me of the Wander network from Susam Pal (https://www.susam.net). His console is at https://susam.net/wander/ and my own instantiation is on https://www.heyhomepage.com/wander/ I didn't look at it for some weeks and now that I did it seemed to have grown more!

I like the swiping UI from Swurf though. Being shown just one at a time is calming. I did the same thing for my RSS feed reader... it just randomly picks one post from one feed at a time, from thousands of feed sources.

Re:Every AI model has the same "controversial" take on humans on Thursday October 22, 2026 @05:10PM (#50201096)
'They' don't have a "take", it's software.

Is the antropomorphising fully done already?

What do they rely on then?
Also blocked on your website, just saying. I'm from EU and browse from EU.

Are we making up words again?

When is Apple going to make an airgapped offline computer? They can call it iGap.

Alcohol is social cement in a sense. Pretty good means to achieve Gemeinschaft, I guess.
Re:My Weird New Hobby: Wandering Around Tokyo on Google Maps on Friday September 25, 2026 @12:04PM (#49846399)
> There are many old and very walkable cities in the Netherlands, any of the larger ones would probably be nice. Any particular spots that you want to share?

I'm from the oldest city in The Netherlands myself, so I know Nijmegen. My tip for people visiting the Netherlands: both the older areas just outside the city centers of Nijmegen and (especially) Arnhem are very nice.

Now that you say... that might be a bigger part of the overall feel than I thought.
Re:Ideas on modernizing the open-source desktop on Thursday September 24, 2026 @05:21PM (#49836900)
Have been using Xfce for some time now on Ubuntu, but for my Debian installation I wanted to try something else. Gnome 3 looks good, but it's just too annoying to work with. I liked Ubuntu Mate, but Mate on Debian just wasn't for me. KDE sounds like a contender also, but my quick test installation gave me too much Windows vibes. Your comment is the final straw for me: I'm going to check Cinnamon out. Thanks.

Thanks!

When I need some energy boost - or energy drain - I check videos of very busy streets in India or Bangladesh. So interesting, but within 10 minutes I'm tired as hell because of all the noise and movement.

Thanks, I also liked walking Manila on Youtube. Interesting place!
Re:My Weird New Hobby: Wandering Around Tokyo on Google Maps on Thursday September 24, 2026 @05:11PM (#49836781)
I agree! A combination of the slowness of walking an me being able to take everything in while lazily sitting on my chair, it definitely does something. Even the sounds, like the humming of aircos(?) and the tunes they play near stations or crossings, get pretty vivid this way.
Re:My Weird New Hobby: Wandering Around Tokyo on Google Maps on Thursday September 24, 2026 @05:08PM (#49836752)
You're talking about digital walking, or real walking? I real-walked in Paris by night (around Moulin Rouge) and it was definitely a memorable evening. Taking a boat trip by day was also museum-like.

Sounds like some American car brands protect their interests here. ;) I have even seen Smart cars towing (small) trailers here in The Netherlands, although that's extreme. But even today I helped a woman coupling a one-axle trailer (3mtr long) to her VW Polo, which is pretty common to see.
Re:My Weird New Hobby: Wandering Around Tokyo on Google Maps on Thursday September 24, 2026 @04:21PM (#49836295)
I'm from Europe and back in 2002 I visited Washington DC (first and only visit of USA). I can fully understand why people gasp at American cars. I vividly remember spotting a Ford Thunderbird (the Retro Bird of 2001-2005) in the wild, a car that I only knew from pictures.
Re:My Weird New Hobby: Wandering Around Tokyo on Google Maps on Thursday September 24, 2026 @02:39PM (#49835033)
I had to click this title!

For some months now I do basically the same, but without the clicking in Streetview. There are some channels on Youtube where someone walks through neighborhoods in Tokyo, I found I really enjoy these. The streets are so clean and the houses so beautiful. Indeed, once in a while a Japanese sports car pops up around a corner, just standing there on somebody's driveway.

I also enjoy the walk-throughs of neighborhoods in New York (edit: now that I think about it, this started with following ari@home, a streamer who makes electronic music on the fly while walking and having an open mic). I tried Dallas once, I guess, but it was all way too big and bulky (but it was down town I guess, so that's to be expected of a lot of cities on this planet).

Does anybody have ideas for other nice spots on this beautiful planet!? I think I know Tokyo by now. ;)

I did not yet watch the full video, but Data Slayer on Youtube made a video about this, I guess. It's at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vbl5FL-nsI
The Data Slayer channel on Youtube made an interesting video about this recently: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5vbl5FL-nsI

With RSS I already do feeds my way.
Re:I Changed My License on Sunday September 06, 2026 @04:25PM (#49590540)
> Eg: is there a clean way to dual license such that hobbyist, and exploratory work (eg: a proof of concept done in a commercial setting) are allowed, but using it in production requires a fee?

Yes, it's called language. Contracts are nothing but text, so why don't you just write down what you think should be the rules around using your software by other people?

I get the urge of a lot of developers to pick an existing third party license from the shelf, but just as you can write your own code - and are not required to use ready-made libraries/frameworks - you can write your own open source license for your software.

Re:The Highest Point in the Netherlands on Saturday September 05, 2026 @01:56AM (#49573472)
Mt. Scenery... never heard of it as a Dutchy. I found out that's in the Caribbean.

You just asked your AI God of choice about this, perhaps?

Thanks, I get it now. I was thinking you used it for geolocating webvisitors or something, already wondered how you'd do that with your own GPS receiver.
I'm a little confused. You mean for getting your own location, I guess?
