Re:H-1B visa shift may favor tech companies on Saturday December 01, 2018 @12:26AM (#18575359)
Although staffing companies have abused the visas but given the way industry is structured, staffing companies do fill a lot of positions for contract workers & consulting roles. Strictly speaking in terms of law they should be able to hire people on visa as well.

The most idiotic thing here is giving a visa to a company based on lottery. As the original comment pointed out, there should be a point system where you are graded based on education and experience.

Re:Hello, and welcome to libh2o on Tuesday November 13, 2018 @02:51PM (#18444261)
Thank you very much for replying. I will take a look at the docs & github repo more closely and provide suggestions.
Re:Hello, and welcome to libh2o on Monday November 12, 2018 @08:03PM (#18437485)
I want to find the guy who wrote this documentation :

"H2O is a powerful web server used and developed by Fastly" - Ok.

"H2O is a new generation HTTP server that provides quicker response to users with less CPU utilization when compared to older generation of web servers" - Great

This is where it becomes cringy : "H2O as a web server is very impressive and is seeing more and more use"

more

"I have used more web server frameworks than is reasonable. libh2o is by far the most impressive effort "

"The H2O maintainers are incredibly friendly and helpful."

I scrolled half the page and still doesn't provide any useful information.

If you happen to write or own any documentation. Please don't use filler use marketing language. Please.

Re:Ask HN: Java Certification on Tuesday November 06, 2018 @05:15PM (#18395392)
I totally agree. I did Java certification 10 years back when I was a junior dev. At that time, many people and companies valued that on resume. Over time, people realized certification doesn't add any real value as things/technologies change over time. Nowadays people would doubt your skills if they see Java certification on resume. Also, Certifications are values in consulting market. If you are looking to work in core tech companies, it is better to invest that time learning something else. Also, I would say in those times people had no other way to showing that you have the skillset. We are living in an era where github is your portfolio. Do open source contributions or do side projects. That is a way more valuable skill than Java certification.
Re:Amazon Plans to Split HQ2 in Two Locations: NY and VA on Monday November 05, 2018 @10:16PM (#18388043)
You are missing a point. every 1 regular job creates 3 non-regular jobs in the market. New businesses like restaurants, coffee shops etc will created which will boost local economy.
Re:You can't impress developers. So don't try on Wednesday October 31, 2018 @04:00PM (#18348806)
your comments is exactly what the article is about. Fault finding becomes a second nature for engineers/programmers.
Re:Show HN: A tool to translate images across languages on Saturday October 27, 2018 @03:14AM (#18314696)
I work with marketing agencies which has huge requirement for i18n & translations. I think there is definitely a market out there that would be interested in something like this. I have seen content creators creating different sets of images with translated text(takes many hours to manually do this right now). I am not sure how you are planning to offer this product/service, I would recommend offering it as an API which your clients can call from their applications.
Re:Proposition C on Friday October 19, 2018 @05:08PM (#18260073)
I completely agree with Stripe here. The homeless problem will not be solved by increasing taxes. The problem is whether the money is being used correctly. I see huge issues with that. The department of homelessness currently has an annual budget of $250Million[1] for providing shelter to homeless. I wonder if govt. is spending $250 Million every year on providing them shelter why are they still living in streets? Where is all that money going?

Re:Square Terminal on Thursday October 18, 2018 @03:16PM (#18251273)
How is it different from a payment terminal machine from bank?
In the other news, software engineers are the lowest paid workers in tech companies.
I think US as a whole is behind using QR codes for payments in general. One big reason is banks. The credit card culture of US made it almost impossible for new technologies to come and break the ground. Till this day there are banks who issue credit cards without chip and people prefer to use it.
Re:Ask HN: Do you regret becoming a programmer? on Wednesday September 26, 2018 @05:35PM (#18080473)
No regrets in becoming programmer.

But I regret the way programmers are treated in industry these days. It went from a niche profession to industrial worker. Being a programmer these days is similar to a worker working in a car assembly line.

If you have API endpoints, I would recommend implementing rate limiters on them. They are easy to implement in code.

Read more about rate limiters & how to implement them here: https://konghq.com/blog/how-to-design-a-scalable-rate-limiti...

Re:Ask HN: How do you survive a leap in your career? on Wednesday July 11, 2018 @07:00PM (#17510908)
I am wondering how did you get a leap? Can you give more background?
Re:Ask HN: How do you find reliable co-founders? on Monday July 09, 2018 @02:47PM (#17492471)
You are not alone. It is really difficult to find cofounders who are really interested. Most people lack the perseverance required to see a product shaping up.

Ping me on twitter and let's connect!

People with no real cs background/coding knowledge or experience becoming managers and making top dollars and engineers struggling with pay.
I started my career from one of such consulting companies. I was naive back then. I thought I am a developer/engineer and this is how software industry is. Now, I actively avoid them. The culture in these companies is horrible. I would rather prefer to work for a small innovative company than working for these body shops.
I do 2 things:

1) As others have already written, I use ssh config to organize the urls and have simpler host names.

2) I use 2/3 letter codes as aliases which ssh into the specific host.

For ex- Environment - tool

sw = staging webserver pw = production webserver pj = production jenkins.

This allows me to open a new terminal window and type 2/3 characters to ssh into a box.

why show modern borders for 240M old earth?
My first reaction when I heard Finance Minister's statement last year saying "Crypto is illegal" was, this is absurd. RBI has no authority to ban this. Good to see the crypto startups in India challenging government's decision.
Bay area companies need to increase the salaries. It is becoming a struggle for even highly paid engineers to survive. If you are single income family with kids then you are barely surviving.
Re:Microsoft is now worth more than Alphabet on Thursday May 31, 2018 @12:41PM (#17197751)
Good to see someone from Bhilai on HN community?
Yes and thousands of Bay area workers can also die from Alien attack.
Re:Solving dynamic programming interview problems on Friday May 18, 2018 @09:22PM (#17106123)
does knuth also come and kick the guy out, if he fails to solve it?
Re:Solving dynamic programming interview problems on Friday May 18, 2018 @09:19PM (#17106119)
Also, it depends on the interviewer. I have been on both sides of the table and I can tell that as an interviewer you need to convey these type of questions very clearly. A interview is typically 45 minutes in most companies, where about 5-10 minutes are wasted in introduction etc. You have about 35 minutes and if you waste 15-20 minutes explaining a problem to the candidate and in the end leave the candidate with 15-20 minutes to solve a dynamic programming question, then it is very unfair on your part.

Most companies in bay area have 3-4 whiteboard interview rounds and I have experienced at least 1 interview, at every place I interviewed(FANG and other top bay area tech companies), where the interviewer wasted enough time either explaining the problem.

As an interviewer, it is really important to keep the time aspect in mind and choose a problem which could be easily explained. The problem itself could be hard, but story based problems waste candidate's time and have little value in assessing the ability of the candidate.

PS: I interviewed at one of the tech companies(the one you all know and I won't name), and in one of the technical rounds, it took the interviewer 20 minutes explaining the problem. The problem basically boiled down to finding largest number at any time in a given sequence without sorting the array. The problem had a background story of some cell towers where each tower had a strength and blah blah. The interviewer was also had communication issues.

Re:Ask HN: What STEM field is currently the wild west on Friday May 18, 2018 @07:28PM (#17105732)
I feel like I already know you by reading your thoughts. Good to know at least few people think that.

Today even pre-ipo companies have MBA's and execs. I think it has to be even smaller company < 100 people may be.

Re:Jim Black's Steve Jobs Story on Friday May 18, 2018 @11:47AM (#17102388)
I googled her images after reading your comment and it is so funny to notice the impersonation.

Also, every C level guy(also middle management wannabes) impersonates Jobs.

paranoia.

Re:Concorde ‘B’ on Monday May 07, 2018 @01:03PM (#17014343)
People don't mind paying a small incentive to cut travel time. I don't have analytics data to prove this, but this is how generally people book flights when searching on expedia or any other website:

1. Search flights from A to B, show me the cheapest flights. 2. Then comes time preference(Should fly Friday instead of thursday? morning vs evening) 3. filter results by least no. of hops(This definitely shows people want to cut down on flying time and most people still pay an incentive to reach their destination faster).

I feel the world and society had many changes since 60s, 70s. People today are more interested in reaching their destination fast and can pay a small premium. This is a change in economics since the Concorde time. People who are paying for Business class and First class, would prefer paying a premium and reaching the destination faster.

People would still want cheap, reliable aircrafts and they should have that option but supersonic commercial flights on certain trans pacific & trans atlantic routes is definitely feasible.

Concorde had high maintenance costs - it required special fuel, special tires and other maintainence costs which made it financially non-viable. If any new supersonic flight addresses these costs, then it will open a whole new world of faster air travel.
