Re:Please, stop pushing for static typing in Python on Tuesday February 01, 2022 @05:45PM (#30170659)
I thought type hints in Python were dumb until I combined them with VSCode. Holy cow the autocomplete and tool tips are incredible, there’s no way I could go back.
Re:Ask HN: How many bytes are in a kilobyte? on Tuesday January 04, 2022 @03:38PM (#29800097)
Agree the kibi- mebi- etc is more clear and resolves a lot of the confusion. Better yet would be to drop the base 2 measures entirely.
Lots of great tax advice here. But 45k MRR is far from FU money. Think creatively about whether there are ways you could grow the business. Going from 45k->90k should be a lot easier than 0k->45k.

All the VCs should be held complicit as well.
Re:Ask HN: How to take first steps to escape burnout? on Sunday January 02, 2022 @10:11PM (#29776899)
Quit asap. Get the s/o onboard or get them offboard.
Re:Ask HN: How to overcome chronic fatigue? on Sunday January 02, 2022 @01:44PM (#29772053)
Do you feel worse after sleeping generally? Two causes I know of this 1) sleep apnea, 2) grinding/clenching/TMJ issues. The second one was a huge problem for me over the past 10+ years, manifesting vaguely as “fatigue” similar to what you describe. I finally found a solution about 1.5 years ago that has allowed me to reclaim about 25% of my waking hours that I was losing to this condition. I’m not 100% where I’d like to be but it’s been a huge game changer. I recommend taking this very seriously and pursuing answers on a weekly basis until you find something that works. And realize that chronic pain can manifest as chronic fatigue.
Welcome to megacorp hell.
Just say no. Low ballers are scum and cannot be tolerated.
Re:Open letter from the BMJ to Mark Zuckerberg on Friday December 17, 2021 @09:05PM (#29600813)
I suspect they would cheer for anti-vax censoring.
If you’re really the CTO of a company that is “growing like crazy”, you probably shouldn’t be doing any coding.
Devops has nothing to do with Agile. You missed the point badly.
Re:The "five whys" productivity technique on Monday December 06, 2021 @06:22PM (#29467088)
Five whys is a good technique if you are in a position to truly apply it. Most people are heavily incentivized not to ask the right questions. So it can become yet another kabuki process quite easily.
If you’re gonna do this, hard to see many ways to make it less painful.
Re:Zillow lost money because they weren't willing to lose money on Saturday November 27, 2021 @07:50PM (#29365155)
Good luck getting a public company to incentivize the people capable of pulling this off…
Re:Ask HN: Is back end dev generally easier than front end? on Wednesday November 24, 2021 @08:00PM (#29337117)
Yes. Backend dev is “clean” relatively speaking, which is why most devs prefer it. Frontend you will always be dealing with someone else’s obscure framework.
Your choices: 1)keep whining, 2) do something about it.
Any non-bullshit project is good. But if you can do some basic coding and communicate clearly, I will teach juniors the rest.
If you have to ask a message board of random strangers, the answer is no.
Re:The metaverse is bullshit on Saturday October 30, 2021 @12:11PM (#29049877)
Another take is that it’s an obvious thin veil to distract and deflect from their real business of selling ads on legacy platforms, much like Alphabet.
Re:Revisiting “The 4-Hour Workweek” on Friday October 29, 2021 @02:17AM (#29035742)
The writing is actually pretty bad too but it’s a great title.
You couldn’t be more wrong. The market is going exponentially higher for truly senior devs. It is impossible to find and hire these people.
No real cost, no real pain, for those making decisions - no proper decisions. No surprise.
Re:Ask HN: What does one look for in a laptop these days? on Saturday October 16, 2021 @02:30PM (#28890184)
One looks for a Mac, and buys it.
Why stop there bro. We need to stop the spread of misinformation in private thoughts.
Re:Does Google's support service work? on Tuesday October 12, 2021 @09:57PM (#28847371)
What support service?
Re:Ask HN: Solo-preneurs, how do you DevOps to save time? on Tuesday October 12, 2021 @05:40PM (#28845421)
The whole point of devops or any other devthing is efficiency. If doing some devops stuff will increase your efficiency then do it. But you probably just need to find someone who will pay for something.
The phrase “best practice” is a sure fire way to signal “I don’t know what I’m talking about.” A lot of times these best practices are really good ideas. But misapplying them by rote can be more dangerous than ignoring them.
Very true but Java devs tend to have limited perspective and flexibility. If you get rid of the cruft it’s a fine language.
Nice way to sneak in a little political cash off the books.
I’d raise money and find some people who can help you with the business side.
