Re:Ask HN: Freelancer? Seeking freelancer? (April 2018) on Friday April 06, 2018 @07:22PM (#16778368)
SEEKING FREELANCER Remote: YES

Technologies: Python, Git, AWS, Terraform, CI/CD

I'm looking to kickstart a simple python microservice template that: - Spins up a pair of EC2s (some security group details) - Deploys the microservice and dependencies (via custom image, packer, dockerized container, whatever) - Terraform scripts for prod vs test - Best efforts via supervisord (or whatever) to restart the python process if it dies - Prefer Gitlab CI/CD pipeline - Would be great if could drop to packet.net as well as AWS (just a nice-to-have)

Would like this to be a starting place for quickly building "production-ish" python services, and am 110% happy with it being open source forever.

Re:A Plan for a Long-Term Stock Exchange on Monday June 13, 2016 @11:20AM (#11894561)
Yeah -- my gut intuition is that this would be a GREAT opp for custodians of shares. (Your shell contract example basically)

You'd buy huge tranches of companies and swap out synthetic exposure to secondary investors who want just temporary directional risk in these companies. Modeling the relative value of the true shares and synthetic shares would be interesting/fun.

If only there was a location more convenient to the Mission =\
1. I hate paying so much for a house, this is ridiculous, they need to build more supply. 2. I bought a house for some ridiculous price anyways. 3. I'm now fucked if more supply is added. Vote against any proposition that adds more units to the city. 4. Go to my job where I make the world a better place.

1. Make more friends. 2. Have more sex.

Naively, is this reasonable because of the density relative to the hydro pump solutions? Intuitively, moving liquids feels easier to me.
I'm on his side. =\

I think the vilification is comical. Not super impressed with the need to dig into his background to find examples of how much of a "tech bro" he is.

This reads differently if it's not coming from the mouth of a hated-elite.

Re:She’ll Text Me, She’ll Text Me Not on Friday February 12, 2016 @11:06AM (#11088171)
This all feels a bit silly as I'm not terribly convinced time-between-texts conveys much about the process (THE BRAIN) generating said data points.

The flow chart for "Should I reply to this right now?" is pretty complicated; recovering that PGM is hard!

And as for signaling "busyness" -- that's better accomplished through delaying showing you "read" their messsage, no?

Is there a missing niche for a whatsapp wrapper that delays "read" confirmations by 3 minutes?

Re:Long range forecast on Saturday January 09, 2016 @11:55AM (#10871892)
I have nearly the 100% opposite opinion on many of these issues haha.

Oil is a bit of scapegoat I think. All commodities are on basically all time lows. Value of real assets across the board has been generally plummeting.

Hard to know how much of this is proxy selling of the Chinese economy -- I suspect a bit; it's perhaps a plausible outcome for Chinese stocks to plunge much further and have commodities RALLY out of it on the unwind.

Re:One Way to Unrig Stock Trading on Saturday December 26, 2015 @10:07AM (#10794253)
There's so many small sub-problems here that it's hopelessly naive to think there's a silver bullet. There are however lots of GOOD ideas. (See CME price band style mini auctions aka restricting dPrice/dt -- I forget what they call them)

I'll not so briefly add:

- Stochastic delays have many externalities; people consuming liquidity will simply send many orders hoping to "win the dice roll" on your stochastic time noise system

- Stochastic delays plus limiting orders per day etc doesn't "easily" work because enforcement is tough when people trade on your exchange as multiple entities, multiple trading desks/groups etc (Huge pita for everyone involved)

- Stochastic delays plus pay per order doesn't consistently work well as value of orders is highly variant and there's no single magic # to make this economically optimal

- Fixed delays are pretty similar to the geo location of the exchange just moving. It effects the external RV situations but I don't feel does much internally except poison market data with more "not-really-there" stuff. (Because MD state is increasingly out of state with in-flight orders) Recognize that stale MD compounds issues as more people send orders at opportunities not really there and this is largely what leads to MD delay spikes etc and is generally destabilizing.

- Selling order flow is 100% bullshit. I wish all that crap was illegal -- this is where retail gets their faces most ripped off and how lots of chumps get to make hundreds of millions for no reason. Building models that tell you which customers in your captive flow to piggyback in which products is super disgusting to me. Anyone who trades with their flows exposed is surrendering alpha to parasites.

I can't be part of THAT small a minority that needs to use CUDA and/or more than 16gigs of RAM.

From my perspective, these mbp are very little marginal benefit for computational work than a small air. (You'll just run everything on AWS/GCE/etc anyways)

Silithus had highly active PvP during those patches leading up to AQ though. Before the pages farm, yeah, nobody ever went there.
Re:Forgotten Corners of World of Warcraft on Saturday April 25, 2015 @08:58PM (#9440104)
GMs used to teleport people to GM island on my original server for fixing various things WAY back in the day. There were a few exploit mechanics that enabled regular players getting there. (Briefly via teleport hack but I think there were 'legit' methods for a window of time with spirit regen + low level rogue maybe?)
Re:Forgotten Corners of World of Warcraft on Saturday April 25, 2015 @08:47PM (#9440084)
Reading this brought back a LOT of great memories.

I remember exactly how I fell in LOVE with WoW. It was f&f, and all it involved was walking from Stormwind down through Westfall to STV. And, then, opening the map and realizing "Shit, this was less than 1% of this world."

That wonder at HOW big and rich a world had been crafted lasted for years. In the first year of release, /played was > 160 days, despite being a leader in a world-first-oriented top PvE guild, 90% of it was world pvp and exploring.

And yet it wasn't actually the environment that shaped the experience, but that we all lived in it.

In vanilla, the world MATTERED. And in a way that wasn't always 'fun' for everyone. (Red is dead bro)

We competed to claim world spawns. We griefed, camped, exploited strange environment mechanics, raided opposing cities and killed world leaders or didn't, set up roaming 5v5s, lagged out in Southshore in 200v200 struggles, denied guilds access to instance zone-ins, cursed when we sometimes got our come-uppance (and we sometimes famously did), and we had meaningful rivalries and camaraderie with other players on our server.

We all had stories about nearly every player you'd meet. Actions of single players had potentially huge social impact.

That disappeared when we all retreated to instances. (Flying mounts were a similar scale catastrophe in world engagement) We no longer really had communal experiences.

I functionally quit WoW at the end of BC. I still played a bit in later seasons and expansions, but just arena selling glad titles primarily, as the magic was gone for me, and not for lack of trying -- I had every possible opportunity and advantage to love the game in the later expansions but never really could.

This sounds more negative than I'd like, because I have really no strong bitterness towards WoW. It was a shaping experience for me. I formed great friendships and memories, learned a lot about myself, and a game like WoW has to grow and evolve and a necessity of that is that some won't enjoy the changes.

Re:Drop-In Coworking Spaces in Tokyo on Thursday April 23, 2015 @10:38AM (#9426985)
I'll be back in Tokyo May 1-3ish -- psyched to check out Nakame lounge; that's new to me.

Fuglen and Maruyama are my two go-to places though neither are great for "working"

Streamer/Lattest I would say are not really appropriate for 'working' either. Sure, I've sat in them for an hour or two on occasion, but it doesn't feel exactly appropriate.

I'm in and out of TKO a lot. (Live in Shanghai) Will happily trades beers and coffees for tips on good cafes. ^^

Interesting that people mention Shanghai as having a good cafe scene; I like a few of the places here okay but I'd never choose them over a bunch of the better options in tko or the US...

Re:How to Get a Quant Job in Finance on Thursday December 04, 2014 @09:57AM (#8699478)
Lots of options:

One-hops (1-2 year stint then transition out)

1. Programming gig at finance facing software shop 2. Programming gig at exchange

No-hops

1. Work on popular open source framework in heavy use (ZeroMQ, QuickFix, pandas, sympy, sklearn, etc) 2. Find headhunter/recruiting agency 3. Attend local finance oriented meetups and schmooze

I wouldn't trivialize the hiring process -- all of these roles are pretty competitive.

Re:How to Get a Quant Job in Finance on Thursday December 04, 2014 @09:52AM (#8699450)
All relative and the curve is certainly right tailed.

There are trader/quants who basically work for free for just upside at lots of prop shops + HFs. There's actually deals WORSE than that where people sacrifice a lot for upside participation in their strategy.

Trading at a bank is a mixed objective problem generally -- much of what you do is NOT about making $ so understanding how and why people make what they make is not trivial.

I can't imagine a world where any of these wouldn't be at least low 6 figure roles -- the banks/HFs/prop-shops have to pay to compete with the Googles/Facebooks of the world.

Re:How to Get a Quant Job in Finance on Thursday December 04, 2014 @09:36AM (#8699364)
Pay is reasonably divided based on those 4 category breakdowns as well.

1) High guaranteed, little upside 2) Low guaranteed, high upside 3) Moderate guaranteed, little upside, better QoL? 4) Low, none..., excellent QoL

I'm not sure how I'd feel discussing kernels of an SVM with someone -- to me, that feels pedantic. I generally feel that the fundamental driver to 'models no longer working' is evolving covariance dynamics (changing linkages) -- this has very little to the mechanisms of most ML tools.

Perhaps the metaphor I'm looking for is that I wouldn't expect a carpenter to be able to build and explain the components of a power drill to use it to help my house.

QuantFi is a huge discipline -- you build teams with hopefully a mixed bag of skills. On the trading side, I'd rather have someone with experience w.r.t to the market + products than math-jutsu any day.

Has anyone recently launched a new startup in Japan under Investor/Manager visa?

I've never seen so much conflicting information regarding what's necessary.

I'm in the super early stages of rolling out an Asia office and would massively prefer to be in Tokyo but the hassle level feels like 10x HK/Sing. =\
