The option these days for Vets is sell to PE, shut down, or try to find a younger DVM who wants to take over the practice and work in for a couple of years. But the younger DVMs have debt to pay and need to take the PE job. There's little love for the PE route but it gives an exit to older vets I suppose. I doubt many like watching their life's work being hollowed out and worn as a skin suit.

It's worth noting that both TapChanger and StealthChanger both require a flying gantry and won't work on a Trident style machine (and thus aren't suitable to a lot of CoreXY type machines).

Re:Direct Solar Power: Off-Grid Without Batteries
on Wednesday September 13, 2023 @07:33PM (#37503045)
Yes but. It turns out that PV solar wins on maintenance by a lot; since you don't have to run hot water pipes and keep the solar heater from leaking. With a reasonable system design you can pretty much just connect the wires to your heater element.

It's identical in design to any number for Makita, Dewalt, or other nicer brands (1k$ from Festool). The point was that it's not a 15K$ tool. It's a 200$ tool for a Dewalt. SMH my head. Yes of course you could buy a bench mount industrial one or something for lots of money.

Lots of mine & industrial vehicles are electrified. In underground mining it's attractive because the vehicle is in a very confined space (easy to run cables to) and it's doubly attractive because of the emissions issue (venting underground). It can make sense for above ground too. But for aircraft and ships you're likely correct.

Anything more than your basic soldering iron is probably running a PID loop to control temperature. I don't know if my hakko is supported by IronOS but I could easily see it as a useful option.

Re:Twitter trackers jeopardize military aircraft?
on Tuesday September 13, 2022 @04:14PM (#32829636)
Military aircraft frequently operate with ADS-B off even here in the US. The whole premise is nonsense. If a military aircraft is being seen on ADS-B it's because they want to be seen. I think the author is trying to make a point about tracking movements to and from foreign nations, overseas bases, etc. but sometimes the point is to let them know you're coming.
Re:Essential Climbing Knots
on Wednesday August 10, 2022 @01:45PM (#32415837)
The more correct term would probably be a figure 8 on a bight. But since climbing harnesses have permanently sewn loops to tie into you can't actually tie it on a bight. You retrace the knot. Otherwise it's a standard figure 8 knot with a loop coming out one end.
Re:Mountain Project – Rock Climbing Guides: Routes, Photos and Forum
on Saturday July 23, 2022 @09:17AM (#32203052)
I like Mountain Project sitting at my desk but physical guidebooks lend themselves well to the half hiking involved in most climbing expeditions (despite the weight of a physical book). There's just something about being able to tick off routes and hold the book upside down to orient yourself that I don't think translates well to an app still. The book writers seem to put more effort into good maps and diagrams too.
They're fascinating, for a good utilitarian example check out The Dixie Caggers Atlas by Chris Watford. For pure art Southern Nevada Bouldering is just beautiful. I'm sure others may have some good recommendations.

There is a hack to this whole affair... Know how big your tank is, do the math (overestimate a bit) and ask for a prepaid fill up. If you don't manage to use the whole prepay the remainder will be credited back to your card. You'll also not hit random limits and card holds when filling big tanks.

I hate the "it was all a dream" take. You see it for literally every movie and it's a completely lazy way to analyze a film. I like this idea better; that maybe, just maybe, they took inspiration from a real life event where the pilot did survive. There's numerous stories from the 50's and 60's of pilots landing in farmers fields having ejected from their disintegrated aircraft.
