Be careful what you wish for; the regulations don't cover Flock cameras because of the distinction between mobile(which is covered) and fixed(which is not) ALPRs. Among other issues.
Re:Nobel Peace Prize for 2026 to Navanethem "NAVI" Pillay on Friday October 09, 2026 @01:01PM (#50023428)
You're welcome to find a more suitable place to visit. Nobody is requiring your presence here, unless they are. Which is a different conversation.
I assure you that if your body did not emit co2 throughout the day you would not continue metabolic processes for an especially long period.
I wonder how much co2 you use to get through the day, and how much you use to remark on other people's creations in a way that suggests you disapprove of their utilization of their available resources. How much co2 do your projects emit, since you seem to be interested in those metrics?
>"Why would we help whichever side is larger?" I missed my sanity pill today, of course it makes perfect sense to increase the suffering of more people so that corporations get even richer.
Okay, so which side is in the majority? The people who have credit card debt or the people who are using rewards programs in a way that doesn't put them in an objectively worse position? Let's help whichever side is larger.

Or maybe they secretly believe you are trying to distill their models and are deliberately degrading your experience. Who knows with them?
>it’s to be expected that an AI lab will know all your prompts, they aren’t providing a paid service for free out the good of their heart. lol.

Er. When you actually pay, at least Anthropic gives you an option to not use your prompts in their training data.

>How do I know that a private LLM system won't have a degradation of quality similar to this or worse?

You use benchmarks, you test, and because YOU'RE the sysadmin you know what weights are running at what time, it's very visible. You can airgap the hardware and be guaranteed it won't change over time. And, frankly, degradation over time doesn't seem to be what's happening with the open models.

>What if someone started an AI company that uses end-to-end encryption to make it impossible for anyone but you to access your data? Personally, I would switch to it in a heartbeat assuming it's competitive with the other products.

Why wait for a company to build it? Get your own local hardware like I did and have those guarantees because YOU set it up.

Ah, no, it was "HTML, Java, CGI, VRML, SGML Web Publishing Unleashed" I had forgotten what all it covered
Re:Polyedergarten: Garden of Paper Polyhedron Models on Thursday October 01, 2026 @02:00PM (#49924958)
I got that same feeling, I used to own a book about it that was quite hefty and from one of the semi-reputable publishers of the time, a very boring brownish cover is all I remember(this was probably 25ish years ago and I probably removed it from my library when the technology was defunct), it was really cool what the web could have been with it...

>1. If it were true, I expect it would be a national security concern, and quickly remedied

It was known in the early 2000s and they've been working on it for decades. Presumably things are better now.

>You guys are so deluded in your little bubble it’s hilarious. Please do not lump all HN posters in one category, and if you insist on doing so, please be courteous and generous with your interpretation of their words. As an aside, I had to look up what pwc is because they're totally irrelevant to me. But in general, it costs you nothing to tell people to spend years retraining their hard-earned skills, which is roughly what your advice is worth. You can't promise that the industry they pivot into will exist by the time they qualify to work in it, and the cost of their career retraining is denominated in time they don't get back. Nor will you be there for their journey to even know if they made it.

>Ditto for refusing to honor the 2nd amendment.

Honoring it, no doubt, by restricting firearms to duly registered militia personnel as written in the plain text for all to see? What about the 14th Amendment section 3, also written plainly?

Excuse me. The law(14th Amendment section 3 specifically) clearly prohibited Trump from being eligible for federal office. That the Supreme Court abrograted state's rights to run elections free of federal interference, not to mention the lack of recusal given the blatant conflicts of interest, is a separate matter altogether.
>>« occasional sabotage operations in Western Europe » – You mean like when the US (plus allies) sabotaged the Nord Stream pipeline?

When is the last time you refreshed your knowledge about this? It's my current understanding that Ukrainians performed this sabotage.

Who is Gorg Prc?

From my perspective, I do not perceive the world as "falling apart" and I wonder how much of your perception of the state of things (as if there was a universally defined "perfection" to strive towards instead of humans creating these concepts) falling apart is derived from your faith, which has a vested interest in presenting itself as a real-feeling thing in order to promulgate its existence. As a meme, it appears to be persistent in the environment for roughly 2k years, so clearly there's some fitness to its host species. And contrast its feelings of apocalyptic end times to Buddhism, where things are more cyclical rather than ending soon, and I wonder how your feelings would be affected were you to have been raised in that environment instead.
Re:Claude Is Not a Compiler on Tuesday July 21, 2026 @02:21PM (#48996085)
I believe it's more that the library contains the finite set of all books which have a (unique) permutation of the language's characters to size N. The challenge to finding the cure to cancer in such a collection of sufficiently large N is indeed finding which book it is in.
Aside from the low-effort snark and lack of empathy towards someone's project, this is also how you filter people out of caring about software development at at a young age, and then who's going to keep the computer systems running?

Re:Whistle on Wednesday May 27, 2026 @09:57AM (#48294478)
I still whistle. I whistle when I'm happy, when I listen to music, and when I'm summoning the dog. I'll whistle while I work, and I'll continue to whistle until I physically can't make the sound anymore.
Re:Leave Me Behind on Monday May 25, 2026 @09:51AM (#48266834)
I'm glad that you find achievement in the personal challenge. At home, I'm just getting things done. Small things, bigger things, and best of all I get to pet the dog more while it works in the background.
Re:MIT: 20% drop in incoming graduate students on Thursday May 14, 2026 @11:34AM (#48136963)
Don't consign us here in Mississippi, voting in every election, to not be represented in a democratic society. It's hard enough living here without getting dogpiled by external people who never visit and think that just because our "representatives" are a certain way that everyone here is like them, instead of the messier reality that power structures here are misaligned with the actual population's collective will.
Re:EFF is leaving X on Thursday April 09, 2026 @01:51PM (#47706963)
I'm sorry, you didn't say anything about your reasoning behind your ad hominem attack, so I can't properly evaluate your point. I eagerly await your clarification as to the relevance of your observation with regards to this HN topic.
Re:A sea of sparks: Seeing radioactivity on Monday March 30, 2026 @04:05PM (#47579086)
If you haven't experienced a spinthariscope, I can highly recommend it. I bought one as a Christmas present for a buddy and we both enjoy its demonstration of radioactivity.
