Why though? I can just imagine someone at the time saying something similar of Steve Wozniak and the other 'phreakers' who were stealing phone calls. If it had worked, and was retold as an old-timer story by a rich and successful man, it would be high-fives all round.

How do you respond to unsuccessful applicants? I sent an application for a (my first) junior position one month ago and heard nothing back. It would be much kinder if you were to at least acknowledge receipt; just an auto-responder that said "We receive a large volume of applications. If you haven't heard back within x-timeframe, please consider your application unsuccessful" would suffice. Just being ignored is demoralising.

Are you able to explain what an electron is, or what gravity is or how light propagates without resorting to metaphor and hard-to-define terms?

I used to be a pretty hardcore rational materialist until I accepted that it doesn't fit very well with my own experiences.

They are and you know it.

I agree. I think the problem stems from how we determine the caloric content[0] of a food stuff. We add the known caloric content of its ingredients, which we determine by burning them. This is probably just not a good model for how the body uses food.
