Re:Why are car keys so expensive to replace? on Tuesday November 03, 2026 @12:54AM (#50348569)
For a phone yeah you can do it yourself. For a physical key card, either you go to service or service comes to you in person. I don't know why.

Wait until you hear about Rivian. $75 or so, including the labor you have to pay to the service center to get the key paired to your car.
Re:Anthropic Cracking Down on Video Game Rewrites on Sunday November 01, 2026 @11:48PM (#50333245)
How much guidance and initial thinking do you have to give it to solve complex problems like that? I've gotten spoiled with the state of the art models, where I give it extremely high-level goals "get this game playable in this other game's engine", it asks me a bunch of clarifying questions, plans it all, and steadily burns tokens on it until it's done. If I could get that locally with < $20K of hardware I'd be very tempted.
Re:I Am the Reason OpenAI Is Killing Unlimited Chats on Sunday November 01, 2026 @11:41PM (#50333207)
Claude is still working for me on a mashup of two very mainstream games. It has had to do (and continues to) extensive reverse engineering and quite a bit of "hmm the game assets are encrypted, let me decompile it and find the decryption key". Not sure if it just refuses new projects or I got lucky and managed to avoid all the tripwires so far. I don't plan on sticking around to have it suddenly start refusing to work for me, so I'll also be switching to OpenAI once my month ends. Hopefully it keeps working for the rest of my remaining time!

Jokes on me if Codex refuses right out of the box, so I'll start low on the usage tiers and slowly upgrade as it proves it can be trusted to continue the work.

Re:Bidirectional Charging During Grid Outages on Sunday November 01, 2026 @02:05PM (#50328612)
When I was living in the PNW and had a 5 day power outage due to a windstorm, my PowerShare/cybertruck made life so much better. Nat gas water heater, furnace, and stovetop definitely helped. Had options to top up the charge too, took the kids to a play date at a house that let us charge, and I had a nat gas generator that worked well to charge the truck too.

New builds in WA state don’t get nat gas anymore though, so people will have to be a lot more careful about using appliances during an outage.

I very much want this to be true, I would shift as much of my workload as possible to local models. But is qwen 3.8 really good enough to do reverse engineering work? Is it because you have many sessions running at once, so it can "brute force" its way through problems?
They're the safest cars on the road and they drive themselves. If you want to maximize your family's safety, you put them in a Tesla. For me, the stress of driving is completely gone now. Traffic jams, slow drivers, complicated turns in unfamiliar areas, none of that bothers me anymore.

If Chinese cars were available here for cheaper, drove themselves just as well, and were similarly safe, I'd consider them.

Claude's insistence on protecting me from myself has already caused me enough frustration that I'm lowering my subscription tier and exploring if other models will work for me instead. The agents work in a VM I've set aside for them or in the cloud, the code & assets are backed up and in source control, and I don't care if the VM gets entirely destroyed because I can rebuild it. I've written this down for the agents. And yet the classifier keeps blocking agents from doing innocuous things like cloning an additional repo on-demand.

Having a "EVEN_MORE_DANGEROUSLY_SKIP_PERMISSIONS" flag is exactly what I'd use. Maybe Anthropic saw the constant profanity in the prompts I've been sending after getting refused.

Yeah, agreed. I do the same. I only contribute smaller patches that definitely fix bugs, and not big vibe coded sprawls of code that happen to work for me but who knows what it breaks. For example I started using opengym which is definitely someone’s vibe code project and then grafted SSO on top for my own needs, but there’s no way I’d submit that upstream. That’s fine. I got what I wanted out of it. Things will adjust but for now just enjoy the ride :)
Seems like a good use for AI. If people can use it to port video games from one system to another or jailbreak consoles, surely "get this library/program compiling on this device, then get all the tests passing, here's root ssh and an internet connection" could work pretty well in most cases. I wouldn't have bothered wasting my time in the past, but now, sure why not? It's not my time anymore and AI can turn the crank until it works.
Haha. I appreciate the intent behind this. HN will hate and downvote it of course, but we need constant reminders that we are emotional, take sides just like everyone else, and selectively get outraged about things.
The downvotes on your comments are weird. Maybe coming from an emotional place. I get it, I wouldn't want to be constantly reminded that the career I sacrificed so much for is a dead end. But it's true, at big companies there may be a ton of items in the backlog but none of them bring in more money. Having a bunch of idle engineers sitting around wastes money, and LLMs allow more engineers to do less. Why would a responsible VP keep around expensive employees who don't contribute to revenue?
Not a truck guy by any means but I wouldn’t want any other truck’s bed after having the cybertruck’s. The motorized tonneau cover and sloped roof adds a lot of volume to what a normal truck bed provides. It’s made the difference from having exposed camping/lake gear to having all of it protected and sheltered from the elements. Now I see my friends’ truck beds and rib them a bit about how petite their storage space is.
Re:Anthropic S-1 on Monday October 26, 2026 @09:43AM (#50243562)
"Best available public data source" isn't a good reason to insist on using irrelevant data to draw conclusions like "top 5 models by token consumption are Chinese/open models".
Strange, I lived in very blue states (WA and CA) and they definitely punish EV owners with large annual surcharges on registrations. To offset “not paying gas tax”. Money is money, red or blue, they will all take as much as they can from you.
Re:F-Zero X on Nintendo 3DS on Sunday October 25, 2026 @10:02PM (#50238204)
Not sure why online forums attract this kind of permanently grumpy person whose only contributions are complaints and nitpicks and snark, but I’m happy to shame, downvote, and flag them every time.
Claude is happily reverse engineering for me, a recently sunsetted mobile game and an old PlayStation game. If it doesn’t moralize at you and refuse to do it, it’s easier to use the smarter model on the subsidized subscription. I’m doing as much as I can now before they start refusing.
Re:No Signs of AI Payoff Outside the Tech Sector on Sunday October 25, 2026 @12:01AM (#50228192)
It'll be hard, when I'm never causing any accidents or speeding or running reds/stop signs. Maybe they could get me for inattentive driving but that's what the tinted windows are for.
Re:No Signs of AI Payoff Outside the Tech Sector on Saturday October 24, 2026 @06:50PM (#50226233)
Your information seems to be outdated, unless every single street I’ve been on for the past year is “vetted”. All the other (consumer) car brand’s self-driving systems do have that limitation though, maybe that's where the confusion came from. Tesla is self-driving 98% of my mileage, with the 2% being when I take over to choose a specific parking spot or I’m towing/carrying something big.

Don’t know much about how it does in the rain since moving to SoCal but in clear weather it hasn’t come close to hitting anyone yet. Even proactively warned me a few times while I was driving. Maybe I should let it take over in parking lots too :)

This is good advice and I wish I had read it before today. I use the state of the art model (Opus 5.5) and telling it with words how to interact with my issue tracker and my repo still doesn’t work. Mostly because of its overly restrictive auto-mode guardrails and brittle command whitelisting, but also a lot of “oops, I didn’t read the doc that you clearly tell me to read at the top of agents.md, I’ll make an ineffective note so this never happens again (it keeps happening)” The solution I’m using now is various scripts that encapsulate almost everything the agents usually need to do and just whitelist those.
Same. Opus 5.5 was my first exposure to a finally smart-enough model and I was blown away at how it reverse engineered everything I pointed it at. But after a few weeks, the undecipherable prose and "safety-first" everything are making it increasingly unpleasant for my toy project. I really don't care if it breaks anything, just merge the damn PR and stop roadblocking me. Oh and I guess I need to start being less curt with it, or else Anthropic may decide I'm verbally abusing their token generator and ban me?

I'll use the best tool for the job, but I am eagerly awaiting for others to catch up so I can stop giving money to those weirdos. I'm proactively going to start shifting my usage to OpenAI, and then diversify further into other providers as they get good enough.

> Everything below L4 is _incredibly stressful_ and unpleasant to drive, because you have to be constantly aware and alert without having anything to do.

Hasn't been my experience for the past year or so, give it a try sometime. Incredibly relaxing and frees up my mind to focus on potential hazards further than just one car length in front of me. Sometimes (don't hate me) frees up my hands/eyes to handle other things that need some temporary attention. Traffic jams, getting cut off by impatient drivers, being stuck behind slow drivers, none of it bothers me. I'm chilling out and talking to my kids and enjoying the scenery.

At this point if you’re able to afford FSD and you choose not to for politics, you’re just making your life worse and less safe for silly reasons. Fine by me as I get driven around in my tank, except for the fact I have to be inconvenienced by human-caused wrecks and my insurance is higher to subsidize them.
The bright minds here are busy posting Trump inauguration photos, trying to “gotcha” free speech advocates, and talking about prison time for tech CEOs. Quite the imagination these guys have!
Re:DeepSeek-v4.1-Flash-1017 on Saturday October 17, 2026 @05:14PM (#50135196)
Yeah, I have the same question. I'd like to incorporate cheap & fast models like DS into my workflow to reduce my reliance on OpenAI/Anthropic, but after trying several such models and having to have a frontier model review/fix/redo everything multiple times per task, I gave up and simply have the frontier models (Sol/Opus) do everything. All of this fits pretty comfortably in my monthly subscription.

Maybe the equation changes if I exceed my subscription usage, and need to fill the gap with something else. But it seems like a huge waste of your time to go out of your way to use a cheap model if you have the tokens to spare in your subscription.

Re:Tesla Roadster on Friday October 16, 2026 @03:35PM (#50123394)
Financial flop, maybe. I put down the pre-order fee on day one, then paid foundation series price for delivery and 2 years later it's still objectively the best car I could have for my family (space for toys, self-driving, safest truck on the road; not every family has these requirements). If they stop making it for financial reasons, that's fine, I'll have gotten my years of use out of it and hopefully someone else will have figured out how to put FSD on a production car.
Re:Using AI to reverse engineer hardware on Friday October 16, 2026 @11:31AM (#50119662)
Yeah I’m rushing to reverse engineer some of my favorite games now when I have tokens to burn. Document the addresses, functions, break the encryption, unpack all assets. There’s no way opus keeps this functionality for long. Then I can have a dumber model continue the work or a smarter model with guardrails reassemble the pre-extracted logic and assets.
Re:What I Self-Host on Thursday October 15, 2026 @06:31PM (#50111313)
That’s what I’ve been doing. Managing this stuff by hand is awful and I’m not a sysadmin who is good at it. I just added single sign on to my home network for a wide variety of various services. Some of them didn’t even support SSO but a quick AI patch fixed that. There is no way I would even attempt that by hand let alone succeed.

I saw statements to the effect of “this would be nice but it’s a lot of work” several times in the post. I don’t understand why that has to be a blocker anymore. All this tedium is gone.

“It’ll never work” -> “someone else can do it but not him” -> “if he does do it, it’ll bankrupt him” -> “well he did it late” -> “it wasn’t actually him” (we are here now) -> “fine but i still don’t like him”

The [flagged][dead] who replied to your earlier comment is an example of someone who reached the final, terminal stage.

My homelab has many fancy new things like a self-hosted gym app and many more metrics and dashboards in my home assistant instance, both of which I use on a daily basis. It also now runs a linux VM that is an always-on agent workspace, and various emulators & decompilers and their MCPs. I, like apparently everyone else, am also reverse engineering games and mashing them up for my own personal enjoyment. I've modded a few games for fun. I've done a security and utilization audit of my server and saved hundreds of dollars in server upgrades I would have bought if I didn't have AI identifying waste and optimizing things. I could have done all of those things before but I didn't, because of how annoying it is to have to dive so deep into the weeds to do small things.

People who have the technical skills and free time for these hobbies, and aren't having the times of their lives right now, are missing out.
