ICE and the protests are an early symptom of hard times. The weak men are the ones who allowed immigration and the welfare state to get out of control in the first place.

Immigration was a pretty big topic during the election. People knew what they were voting for. I find it sad that you find it hard to believe people have civic pride they want to defend.

Because most people are happy to see immigration laws enforced.

I was interested until I got to the "fascist" line where the author reveals his motives for avoiding AI. Bummer, I was hoping for a level headed technical argument. This post doesn't belong on the front page.

I thought this article was going to talk about async IO's potential to cause insidious bugs that you don't notice until they're crashing jet planes. That's definitely a topic worth of a blog post.

Hawaii's "fragile native ecosystems" exist only in your fantasies of the past, or way up in the mountains where nobody lives or farms. If Medinilla wants to invade an Albizia grove, who cares?

Re:Why Climate Change Won't Be Stopped (2018)
on Friday June 26, 2020 @05:07PM (#23657057)
Thanks for stating the obvious, Sherlock. My point is: the WORRY about climate change is mostly focused on urbanism. The loudest voices come from the city. These people have a weak connection to nature aside from the occasional hike and holiday. The mostly worry about their cities going underwater. Country folks are used to dealing with the unpredictability of nature and are more likely to find a way to adapt.
Re:Why Climate Change Won't Be Stopped (2018)

All the worry about saving the environment is really a worry about preserving the viability of urban/suburban lifestyles.

Hawaii is not very expensive unless you want to live in a country club neighborhood and survive on imported products.
You left off Puerto Rico.
I know many Americans who have moved to Central/South American countries without much trouble. Costa Rica is so popular they're worried about gentrification. Ecuador is up and coming for expats.
Re:Fitful nightly sleep linked to chronic inflammation, hardened arteries
on Friday June 05, 2020 @02:00PM (#23431666)
There was a period in my life (almost a decade ago) when I was sleeping poorly due to unhealthy work habits and excess caffeine. I was in my 20s and early 30s during this time and felt invincible, but the effects on my body were profound. The damage became so tangible I had no choice but to make a change, and have for the last 5+ years been sleeping normally. I miss those days of nonstop work, I was more productive then, but it would have killed me if I had continued.
Re:Ask HN: If you could work remote where would you live?

I wonder why so many people wishing to live in rural locations pick places with brutally cold winters, rather than the tropics. If you want to live off the land you'll have a much harder time of it in cold places.
Re:It’s OK for your open source library to be a bit shitty (2015)
on Saturday May 16, 2020 @11:21PM (#23209295)
I used to maintain a bunch of open source libs but stopped because I felt the expectations from users were unrealistic for something that was not my full time job. Open source is great but I wouldn't do it again unless maintenance was my top focus.
