Re:JPEG XL vs. AVIF for web use-cases on Friday October 16, 2026 @12:48PM (#50120854)
Great article!

Overall I am getting that AVIF is better on the web...unless Lossless is needed, in that case better take JPEGXL.

Re:Do dentists know what they're doing? on Wednesday October 14, 2026 @03:55PM (#50094110)
In other countries this would cause the medical practitioner to lose their practice license for life + get huge fine and depending on the damage they could be judged and even serve jail time. This usually deters anyone from doing such things as they already earn good money. As for the ones trying...well, they end up serving as an example.
Re:$2599 Microsoft Surface Laptop Ultra on Wednesday October 07, 2026 @02:52PM (#49997204)
Just found out how to get the $2599: it's not easy, only available in silver, 24GB RAM and 512 SSD

AI hasn't arrived either. I always find it so weird how marketing suddenly redefines words and concepts.

Re:Building a Linux GPU Driver for the M4 Mac Mini in One Month on Wednesday September 16, 2026 @10:27AM (#49727581)
I am also looking for what was used, I really like the design of these!
So I should verify that my data isn't just shared for product improvement but also to take credit from me?

I should verify with wireshark and other software that my LG TV isn't listening to me and selling my data.

I should make sure that whatever product I buy I spend the time to go over every setting page in case there is a switch (defaulted on) that says "I authorize the sell of my data".

I should make sure to look at every ingredients on the back of each box of food product to make sure it will not kill me.

I should document myself on the undisclosed growing practices (because no packaging here) of the vegetables and fruit I am buying and make sure that I equal PhD researchers on the dangers of the pesticides used by the specific company I am buying from.

I should make sure myself that the battery in any device is up to standard and will not blow me and my living place by researching the factory that made it and buying testing equipment.

I should make sure to educate myself on how my retirement 401k investment strategy works otherwise, I may not have proper retirement.

... I could go on and on; it's infinite.

We are asking people to become experts in all domains rather than providing a safe context through regulations and laws. I don't like thinking the issue is people, I am a person myself, and I often do mistakes on things I don't want to be an expert at but I do believe I should be in a safe context and not have to worry about every single thing.

Or at least: tell me I should be careful/worry about those particular things.

If I didn't dream it, I think their presentation said something like 50% increase so you should be quite right probably around ~110GB/sec
Re:App Store Rejection of the Week: Dark Hours on Friday August 07, 2026 @03:49PM (#49215410)
The "Astrology" reason emphasized in the article isn't the main reason, they actually quickly talk about it:

> the App Review Board and the Review Board responded that they determined the original rejection was valid because, I shit you not, “We understand that the app includes a live tarot reading feature.”

So that's it, they need to remove the live tarot reading. Which to me while not being astrology, isn't much better.

Re:Tailscale didn't stop the Hugging Face intrusion on Friday July 31, 2026 @05:02PM (#49128479)
Honestly, at this point if Tailscale is "guilty" then what about the ISP? And the electricity company?

And by saying that, I am not saying that they absolutely couldn't do anything about the stolen credentials, but still, they don't seem to really be the issue in the story.

It just seems like a PR post and it makes their solution at the same time looks good for taking accountability (if we don't wonder "accountability on what?") but at the same time they appear as security failing, which they aren't. That's very odd to me.

Re:The great wealth transfer reality check on Friday July 31, 2026 @03:02PM (#49127290)
The article says the exact opposite.

Wealth isn't with boomers: it is with rich boomers, pointing the high mortgage and debt that a lot of boomers have.

And they explain that the wealth is going to stay and be kept by these rich families (which will invest and not spend).

Re:Yann LeCun's $1B Bet Against LLMs [Part 1] [video] on Friday July 31, 2026 @11:09AM (#49124129)
Maybe it is assumed in this video, but Yann Lecun and many other demonstrated how physics remains a big, completely unsolved challenge for LLMs with no solution in sight due to its nature.

But I'm not at all an expert in the domain and I might have misunderstood something please feel free to contradict me!

Re:The coolest use for the Vision Pro on Thursday July 30, 2026 @12:02PM (#49111907)
> I don't know why people hesitate so much

Money? It's hard to stop getting revenue suddenly for an undetermined time. Especially with a family behind.

> Worst case scenario, you fail, learned a bunch, lean back on what supported you before

That's to my opinion very simplistic very often not true and dependent on the job market (which isn't that great right now!)

Re:The US government just banned Roombas on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @04:41PM (#49102803)
There is no evidence. I didn't know but apparently right-wing Americans are harassing her, according to Wikipedia[1]

> Lorenz has been the subject of online harassment, which multiple sources have described as coordinated or orchestrated.

> Much of the harassment has originated from right-wing online spaces.

> The Independent wrote, "Lorenz is a regular target of attacks from the right online, with comments she makes frequently blowing up and feeding an arguably disingenuous outrage culture, so much so that she has been called 'the most harassed technology journalist in America' and her career recommended for study to fellow reporters".

Re:Cooking for Engineers on Wednesday July 29, 2026 @02:25PM (#49101160)
I would rather see grams than tablespoons as a metric, I think it is much easier to cook with everything under one unit.
Is there a source? Or is that xenophobia?
Re:Designing emoji for the way we communicate today on Friday July 17, 2026 @03:42PM (#48951480)
How can you cut so many budget of so many products and decide "yeah, emoji in 3d, that's what we are going to do!". I don't understand... Maybe they have some AR/VR future usage of some kind?
Re:OnePlus halts operations in USA and Europe on Thursday July 16, 2026 @10:43AM (#48935314)

I also really like having 12pm being the moment the sun is at the highest point. But I think the whole point of that change is to simplify and this would go the other way.
Re:Don't discontinue Gemini 2.5 Flash on Friday July 10, 2026 @05:21PM (#48865450)
In the post the issue is performance. Are you saying that getting too attached to performance is a smell? That sounds very odd.

It's not because a model performs better in some applications (often by fine-tuning to get better scores at specific tests) that it is better across the board or that we have to believe the company releasing the model with a high number 3 > 2 so that it is commonly accepted as better.

Pushing the reasonnning further: f you need an Opus level performance then not accepting GPT 3 isn't a smell.

Re:Why American ambulance rides are so expensive on Friday July 10, 2026 @09:07AM (#48859388)
If there is no emergency way to contact an ambulance in network then there should be no in- or out-of-network.

Calling 911 does not give you an in-network and there no way to know in advance unless calling your insurance (in business hours, giving that you are not dying... which you probably are)

Think. Why did we start to pasteurize?

Re:EU plots long game against US digital supremacy on Wednesday July 01, 2026 @10:58AM (#48747927)
It's not a plot. Everything is public in within EU strategy and the issues with the US digital products have been long discussed in the EU parliament.
Re:Historical memory prices 1960-2026 on Monday June 29, 2026 @11:59AM (#48720985)
There is something wrong with these graphs: they indicate nand price to be back to 2020 level but in 2020 I got nand for half the current price.
They would never say it is about the other reasons because of politics.

Also RAM is impacting other components such as SSD

The cause is the whole thing, cost of shipping (container, gas, etc), cost of components (RAM, SSD, etc), cost of tariff, cost of lobbying and lawsuits, and overall inflation cost.
bad performance review and a layoff are completely different worlds.
