As a Darwinist of sorts, I'm afraid that if this actually were true, we would be seeing some serious disruption of those nerds by much more functional diverse teams. The cat's been of the bag for so many years that somebody ought to have exploited it by now. But so far, it seems that one poster child example of a company which made tons of money bringing computing to the masses is Apple, under the lead of no one else but You Know Who, and (allegedly) with quite obsessive, arrogant, nitpicking and abrasive people working under him.
How is this not an abuse?
Does he even bother reading them nowadays?
If anything, I would say that if git were less popular, its developers wouldn't have to deal with constant complaints that their UI scares noobs.
Why, from his point of view - if GH lacks functionality he needs and git proper delivers this functionality in conjunction with email, GH is just about as useful as an empty beer can ;)
But sure, outsiders with zero idea of what is being discussed love to take his words out of context and derive all sorts of bizarre conclusions.
> I sometimes meet people, most (all?) of them women, who were not nice to one idiot groping them and woke up in the hospital.
In Europe? I suppose it's possible in some pathological neighborhoods but I would be surprised to hear it's a common occurrence. But then, I guess, once per lifetime is dangerous enough, as you say.
Either it's deception or perhaps some obscure low-end embedded vendor.
edit: for the curious, it's "(redacted) hardware bugs" :)
Dunno, it's just a hypothetical question and speculation whether there are any sensible reasons for Oracle to maintain status quo.
Chromebooks use kernel signing to prevent this. The problem is, Google doesn't give you keys to your hardware so you have to replace them yourself or use devmode which disables kernel verification.
Another possible solution is to keep the kernel on an external, physically secured pendrive and never forget to press CTRL-U during boot (to stop a hypothetical attack involving a malicious kernel installed to the internal flash which exfiltrates your FDE passphrase or something like that).
What to Submit
On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity.
Off-Topic: Most stories about politics, or crime, or sports, unless they're evidence of some interesting new phenomenon.
I too normally dislike things disappearing from the front page in 5 minutes but I made an exception for this submission and flagged it because such stories are dime in a dozen and this one brings zero new information, solves nothing and mainly just perpetuates hostility.
And no, I'm not from SV. I think many developers from all over the world, particularly of the sort hanging out at HN, will consider your stance somewhat crazy.
Well, it's possible to temporarily unlock firmware write protection and replace Google key with your own and run self-signed kernels and arbitrary distribution securely. But indeed, I haven't heard of anyone actually going through the effort to do so.
By allowing ZFS-derived works to be licensed under GPL, I suppose. I wonder if they could do it without allowing for a GPL fork which would become unmergable to the upstream?
Without links this post is useless to everybody besides people who know about this case. Both of them.
So let's count: the OP is one and I'm another. It follows that nobody else knows ;)
For example, in case of this "sexual harassment in tech", I really think it's a matter of significant lack of understanding between the parties involved. Apparently it's not the case that most women would agree to have sex with just any random dude, but nevertheless some men seem to expect exactly that. OTOH, I very much doubt that they would be willing to take them by force, but nevertheless women end up worrying about all the possible things that may have happened.
> good policy and good laws depend on a logical and unemotional view of things
That's plausible. Good policy probably benefits from understanding, which seems to be improved by familiarity, which reduces emotional reactions, particularly the negative ones.
> You should not, however, make decisions based on how you feel about things.
But OTOH, if for whatever reason you can't obtain familiarity and understanding, it probably may be safer to follow your gut feeling. I think that's what guides many people and they probably don't think about it much.
> The internet is all about the feels - the mob, the pain, the sadness, the outrage.
THB, you could equally well describe Bolsheviks or Nazis that way. And they have this curious property of predating the Internet by several decades ;)
... so he needs protection in case his lawsuit fails for lack of evidence and the defamer maliciously counter-sues him for defamation.
That's exactly parent's point. "Real" victims refers to victims of crime that actually happened and wasn't just made up, not some classification of crimes as serious or not.
Basically, the OP forgot to mention that harsh punishment should be reserved for cases where it can be solidly proven that allegations were made up and people started to nitpick on it.
Same thing as with Trump. It's because literally nothing else works today against self-righteous leftists.
You said in another comment that majority of Poles would rather leave EU than deal with the Islamic mess. AFAIK the most credible opposition to the current government is still PO, who were the ruling party before and literally in the last days of their term they signed an extremely unpopular obligation to accept forced resettlement of German Muslims, which the current government had to backpedal from, damaging the country's international credibility.
The Polish government doesn't really have to do anything to stay in power indefinitely now. Until something changes on the political scene and a credible opposition arrives which isn't a puppet of Brussels, it's enough that they shake their fist at Merkel's social policies every now and then and they are literally guaranteed to win every election forever.
Assuming you have done the hacking anonymously in the first place.
