Re:Ruby 4.0.0 Released on Thursday December 25, 2025 @09:55PM (#46388804)
Types don't make testing in general unnecessary, but it removes a class of error handling that runtime type checking handles for you. You can really trust the types when using Sorbet.

(I also work in a 40m+ loc non-rails ruby codebase that is almost entirely typed with Sorbet.)

Re:Let go of StackOverflow; communities must take ownership on Sunday November 30, 2025 @05:28PM (#46101057)
The "closed duplicate" thing is blown away out of proportion than it actually is. I'm convinced people are just pooping on Stack Overflow, not because it's bad, but because they just like complaining about things.

out of curiosity, why are you trying to validate emails?
Re:The tiny chip that powers Montreal subway tickets on Monday June 24, 2024 @01:24AM (#40772832)
I really enjoyed this read, thanks.

In the footnotes you said:

> One complication is that the counters have an "anti-tearing" feature for additional security

Two questions:

1. Why is it a "complication"? Is it just that it makes the counters more complicated, or is there something frustrating about the counters? 2. I would love to learn more about how the anti-tearing feature works!

> Anyone wanna know what the optimal magic number is?

Sure.

The post mentions BYOIP. I assume Cloudflare wanted OP on BYOIP to mitigate risk, and Cloudflare wanted them to pay for the privilege.
And Spectrum has interruptions all the time.
Re:Updating Gov.uk’s crown on Tuesday February 20, 2024 @11:34PM (#39450193)
I miss gov.uk sites so much
I don't think spammers care if trimming the plus-alias doesn't work for some email providers.

Gmail is also pretty popular, so it's not much work to just hardcode it there.

This link is incredible, thank you!
Re:The Placeholder Girlfriend on Sunday December 03, 2023 @08:05PM (#38512539)
Knowing that a guy wrote this ruined the post for me.
25 and struggling with this.

I was feeling motivated last night at 1am, and it took every inch of my body to NOT whip out VS Code.

Still couldn't sleep until 4am. Woke up today at 1pm.

--

I used to think that growing up would mean that I could go to sleep whenever I wanted, and do what I want.

Turns out that growing up means you learn that you shouldn't do those things.

But why? My mornings are usually clear of meetings, and I could just work PST hours from the east coast, and it would be fine.

Turned out that working every evening is not good for your social life, and having a social life is something I try to prioritise more than hacking all day all night.

Interesting opinion. Why?
Re:And Then Came JavaScript on Sunday November 26, 2023 @01:50PM (#38423923)
That's what my university did.

First semester was Haskell and Logic (truth tables, state machines), and some other stuff

Second semester was Java, and some other stuff

Uno reverse card right there.
Re:Ilya Sutskever "at the center" of Altman firing on Sunday November 19, 2023 @03:14AM (#38330378)
Yeah, that seems like a very normal interaction.
Re:Giving a Shit as a Service on Sunday October 29, 2023 @01:58PM (#38061005)
This is so wise. I'm gonna ask my teammates next week about what it is in their job that they give a shit about.
Re:All of ChatGPT's System Prompts on Saturday October 14, 2023 @04:06PM (#37883813)
I haven't played much with it recently but I was under the impression that ChatGPT was not great at mathematical computations.

that's to say, 1+1=2 is a well known fact, so it'd get that right, but ask it to md5sum a string that is not in any existing rainbow table, and it'd get it wrong.

I've not used GPT 4 so it might have gotten better.

Re:Opening up access to GOV.UK Forms: an online form builder on Friday October 06, 2023 @10:21AM (#37791140)
When I retire I want to go work for the GDS
The only reason I maintain an Instagram is to have images to show on dating apps, and the only reason I use Twitter is to stay up to date with the tech community (and scream into the void).
Didn't most things do that back in the day? LinkedIn (owned by Microsoft!) supporting drug spam sounds ludicrous.
Re:One Guy Ruined Hacktoberfest 2020 on Saturday October 03, 2020 @11:54AM (#24672816)
Agreed. We got two this year. Never received a spam PR before.
Re:Compiler Explorer on Thursday August 06, 2020 @05:49AM (#24069507)

And it still is, right? Or is there also a Compiler Explorer domain?

It is a simple page in large black text saying "You spelled it wrong.".
Re:Zoom Acquires Keybase on Sunday May 10, 2020 @03:20AM (#23130923)
Indeed. We always knew that Keybase would have to find a source of income someway, get bought, or shut down.
Re:Slack Acquires Astro on Monday September 24, 2018 @12:08PM (#18058856)
Slack has always been fine for me... but my laptop has also become slow.... so maybe it's nicking all the power ;)
Re:Choosy opens every link in the right browser (Mac OS X) on Monday September 24, 2018 @11:28AM (#18058488)
This app looks neat. Why doesn't Google Meet and Coda.io work in Safari for you?
This is actually crazy. So I'm guessing this suggests playlists based on "similar people" in the most literal sense?
Re:Apple acquires Shazam on Monday September 24, 2018 @11:25AM (#18058461)
Nice, I heard about this a while ago but it's nice to see an actual press release about it.
