I am not surprised that this default GNOME anti-feature (extract instead of mount or open in File Roller) was also inspired by macOS, which at least has a standard mountable container format.
It becomes an annoyance as soon as you encounter your first archive that has no root directory (i.e. most Zip files created on a PC) and fills the parent folder with countless files.
Re:Rotation of Sprites Using Three Shears

The biggest downside is that Paint squeezes the result of shearing into the original selection, losing pixels in the process. Neither resizing or shearing is antialiased either, only resizing the whole image applies a bilinear filter.

These days it's exclusively MTP as an extension to PTP that can transfer more than pictures, but similar problems with slow directory listings still exist due to the required translation between names and object IDs. Also the protocol does not support multiplexing requests, so you can't copy files while a directory is getting iterated.

Combining encrypted DNS and TLS 1.3 with encrypted handshakes, there's a reasonable cause for deniability which service you have accessed even if you can never hide the resolved IP address.
Re:Android 12 will let alternative app stores update apps automatically

While this is nice for those who have a significant number of applications installed e.g. through F-Droid repositories, it won't make things easier for "standalone" third-party apps that only update themselves, since they will continue to be marked as originally installed by a browser or file manager app.
I assume Epic Games already has a separate launcher app similar to that on the desktop that takes care of updating games.
Re:Libschrift: A lightweight TrueType font rendering library
on Tuesday April 21, 2020 @12:04PM (#22936181)
On the contrary, this library currently cannot deal with a composed code point e.g. for “LATIN CAPITAL LETTER U WITH DIAERESIS” either, as TrueType fonts tend to only contain glyphs for the base letter and diacritical marks, but no combinations of them. This affects most accented characters from Latin-1, but not unique ones like ¶ or Þ.
