Re:How solid is Tim’s plan to redecentralize the web? on Friday October 05, 2018 @05:52AM (#18146876)
the SafeNetwork seems like the best decentralised project in that respect. the more resources you share with the network (cpu, hard drive space) the more money you earn. that should more than enough incentives for most poeple!

there are a few other things too like only being charged to upload files once vs paying a subscription for the rest of your life, or only needing one password for all sites.

Re:More than 9M broken links on Wikipedia are now rescued on Tuesday October 02, 2018 @03:50AM (#18119538)
that does my head in. I have so many videos on most of my playlists that im hardly ever able to guess what the missing video was.
Re:Facebook Network Breach Impacts Up to 50M Users on Friday September 28, 2018 @02:16PM (#18095651)
a good argument for switching to signal is that you can also use it to send sms messages, which means you don't have to switch between apps as much or at least lets you cut down on the amount of IM apps you have installed
im using newpipe on android and adding the rss feeds to newsblur so I can watch on desktop. its actually really good since you get away from their suggestions side bar and autoplay (and the UI).

newsblur let's you organise things into subfolders too which is helpful

the other thing in going to start using is youtube-dl to download my watch later videos and then use something like emby or plex to watch them. maybe do the same with videos that I want to keep so I don't have to worry about then disappearing every second day

Re:Why I’m done with Chrome on Monday September 24, 2018 @05:10AM (#18056099)
I use Firefox every now and then just for reading articles so my main browser doesn't get bloated with tabs, but it runs far from fantastic on my computer for some reason.

whenever a page loads all the elements move around for a second or two before they settle in their right place. that would crack me up if I had to put up with that all day

Re:Why I’m done with Chrome on Monday September 24, 2018 @05:05AM (#18056077)
well there's always vivaldi or chromium if you want to slowly wein yourself off google
there are other chromium based browsers like vivaldi and brave that might disable a lot of the google crap but i couldn't be certain of the top of my head
Re:A DMT trip 'feels like dying' – and scientists now agree on Saturday September 22, 2018 @02:06AM (#18044730)
I have a vague recollection of someone suggesting small bits of DMT might be released while we sleep and that our dreams are like snack low key trips.

Well dreams are a fairly beneficial things to have especially if you have some epiphany or figure out the solution to a problem you're having.

The near death thing might just be your brain dumping that DMT out of your pineal gland all at once either when your body is shutting down from natural causes or when you are in some kind of traumatic accident.

Re:Evernote just slashed 54 jobs, or 15 percent of its workforce on Wednesday September 19, 2018 @04:32AM (#18022748)
maybe a lack of focus as well. just look at those apps they brought out years ago, evernote food and the other contacts app
Re:EU to stop changing the clocks in 2019 on Tuesday September 18, 2018 @03:07AM (#18013167)
"spring back fall forward" isn't much help either since you can fall back as well as forward
note station is actually decent enough. there's a web clipper, desktop app, mobile apps, and its pretty much a complete clone of evernote. they even managed to add text highlights before evernote did.

the only thing stopping me from importing everything into it is that there is only 1 export option. they need to add a html option and maybe plaintext

Re:$600 Chromebooks are a dangerous development for Microsoft on Saturday September 01, 2018 @02:09PM (#17893151)

they're all in you're user folder on Windows so wouldn't that be pretty much the same as the root gdrive folder and whatever subfolders you have things organised into?

Re:What Dropbox dropping Linux support says on Tuesday August 28, 2018 @04:52AM (#17857434)
I'm thinking of switching to syncthing soon, but I would probably recommend resilio to less techy types since it seems like its slightly easier to use, especially if you are paying the subscription fee where you can have all your folders added on new computers
I use both osmAnd and Maps.me from the fdroid store.

Maps.me: https://f-droid.org/app/com.github.axet.maps

osmAnd has a ton of features. maps is more basic but is better for navigation since it has a 3d option

I presumed they open sourced it already since the "Maps" app in the fdroid store is the same app just minus some ads or something
I've been using a trackpoint for a long while now and I was 99% certain they were superior to everything else but i had been hearing a lot of good things about the surface book trackpads and that they were at the same level as apples so I decided to switch for a while.

its been about 4 months of using nothing but a trackpad and even though its really good im fairly certain I'll be sticking with trackpoints from here on out.

one thing that's really starting to bug me lately is the accidental clicks from your palm hitting the edge of the trackpad. I don't know how people manage with those new macbooks with the oversized trackpads

I'm not sure what sensitivity I have it set at but most of the time I'm only moving the tip of my finger maybe half a millimeter at the most. you shouldn't have to press it that hard but it does take a while for most poeple to get the hang of it.
Re:Google tracks your movements, like it or not on Monday August 13, 2018 @09:46AM (#17750001)
is just second nature at this stage that nova launcher gets installed straight away. export/import the settings and you're all set to go
the safe network will be live in a few years so don't waste your time on r&d
well then sony had been lying to me for years. the last 3 phones I've owned have had waterproof headphone jacks
Re:My favorite apps on F-Droid on Sunday July 08, 2018 @11:13PM (#17487728)
I didn't see anyone mention fasthub, it's the best github so I could find so far
Re:My favorite apps on F-Droid on Sunday July 08, 2018 @10:58PM (#17487654)
it's impressive the amount of things that osmAnd but it ends up being a bit cluttered at times.

try "maps" for something more basic (white logo with black M). it's a fork of mapbox's "map.me" app just without any ads

Re:The failed quest to bring smells to the internet on Saturday July 07, 2018 @04:36AM (#17477682)
im wondering what smell you would have got when you scrolled through the comments section of a YouTube video...
one thing that might make it easier to sell the idea of using signal is that you can also use it to send regular sms messages as well as private ones. that means you only have to switch between two apps, which is what you would be doing anyway
Re:Apple Music now has 38M paid members on Tuesday March 13, 2018 @05:51PM (#16580192)
lack of playlist folders is the main thing that made me move back to spotify. I was using Google music for a year or two and made maybe 80 or so playlist before it got to much to handle. I had way more playlists on spotify and I would have moved them over to Google if there was a way of organising them

most of the new music i find these days is on discover weekly so I don't have as much of a need to upload tracks. it is really odd that none of the other services have added that feature yet. talk about being behind! its been 7 years

another thing that bugged me about Google music is the albums and singles being mixed up and also the album view not showing the order by year. it seems to be just random.

but apart from that its pretty decent and it is odd that its not mentioned as much as the others

Re:What to Make of Finnegans Wake? (2012) on Sunday February 18, 2018 @05:09AM (#16405311)
ive found that I enjoy reading about the wake more than reading the text itself. there's plenty of books around that walk you through the text but I've never got around to reading any of them. most of the things I've picked up have just been tidbits here and there online

there some audio on YouTube of the man himself reading a short passage that helps get an idea of how some of the words sound https://youtu.be/M8kFqiv8Vww

the mckenna video above was my introduction to the wake and its well worth a listen.

i jumped into the deep end with the wake a few years back without ever reading his earlier work but im listening to a podcast now by frank delaney where he goes through ulysses line by line and christ is that book dense. there are so many references that in some episodes he only gets through a single line! I'm thinking now that maybe ulysses is the deep end and the wake is one of those huge sink holes that collapse and swallow whole buildings.

Re:AMP for email is a terrible idea on Wednesday February 14, 2018 @07:46AM (#16375339)
"Also make sure you set-up getting your emails into ProtonMail from day one"

could you explain this a bit more? ive been routing my gmail to protonmail since i started using it but im slowly changing accounts from using gmail to protonmail as i go

Re:AMP for email is a terrible idea on Wednesday February 14, 2018 @04:25AM (#16374606)
there weren't any alternatives back then. there are plenty alternatives to gmail luckily enough
I've been using Bluetooth in my car to stream music for a long time now and ive had bluetooth earbuds for the last year so im believer, i just don't believe in taking away features that dont need to be taken away.

there are still plenty of times where a headphone jack can be useful. when you run out of charge, if youre at someone elses house but then dont have any bluetooth receiver.

maybe in the future when bt headphone batteries last more than a day i might be able to get behind the idea a bit more
