Why just the old? I’m “young” and could benefit from an iron man suit
Re:The Dawn of the Age of the Exoskeleton on Thursday October 08, 2026 @05:07PM (#50012303)
As someone with asshole hips at a “young” age (osteoarthritis), I dream of having an exoskeleton so I can hike long distances.

Hell, give me flight while you’re at it - iron man style.

At one point I wondered if it was feasible to get into this industry myself with my prosthetic, electrical engineering, and software background

Maybe with AI assistance it’s possible, or in the alternative case it goes the “Thomas Midgely” way and cripples or maims me further

Heaps of Learnings here [0] from getting an entire games state into a url or QR code (a pretty damn complex game, 5-10 minute games comfortably fit in a QR code such that games can be replayed exactly as they happened - no server)

[0] - https://github.com/con-dog/snibble/blob/master/README.md

No he could have left out languages entirely. It’s not relevant for actual discussion.

A non transformer language model written from scratch is more interesting than

“I did X in Python/Rust/Flavour-of-the-month-thing”

“In Rust” man of all the cliche title baits, I hate this one the most.

Why did you choose Rust? Why does that matter?

Nothing wrong with Rust. Lots wrong with the bandwagon that “in Rust” somehow adds value.

Where to start? Doesn't have any match. Pressing replay does nothing...

If you’re interested in IDEs and want to see a completely different take, look no further

To me these show HN posts all build things that are a bit too obvious

Woah
Caveats to why I do so much - I quit my job. So,

Polishing my GitHub bio / project showcase which has landed me interviews

[0] - https://github.com/con-dog

Working on a second version of my maze solving neural network (14 byte brain, 96.5% solve rate up to 21x21 grids)

[1] - https://github.com/con-dog/tiny-neural-network

Also working on a self-editing IDE built from my “ADHD” architecture, slices

[2] - https://github.com/con-dog/slices-demo

Revisiting my first ever game and porting it as an LLM benchmark, but I worked on this for 6 months so it’s piecemeal because I needed time away from it. Oh yeah Astra, Fable, etc all lose to humans in this game. Massively. Also, 1 hour games comfortably fit in a QR code, no server in the loop.

[3] - https://github.com/con-dog/snibble

And finally, I’m working on yet another raycasting game engine and game which is what is taking most of my focus. It has some novel concepts that I’m not yet disclosing

Look into openrouter so you aren’t tied to just Claude or codex
Hey OP I made something very similar called slices-ide [0]

It’s a self modifying editor with embedded agents. Honestly that description doesn’t do it justice, it was an experiment in making an architecture to use the strengths of my adhd when coding.

You can chat with agents inside the editor itself and ask them to modify ANYTHING in the IDE itself, including adding custom panels, changing the theme, rewriting logic

Hell, if they wanted to they can brick the entire editor too or remove agents entirely lol. There is a global undo / redo and timeline so as long as the timeline isn’t bricked you can step back to an earlier point in time

The editor has a visualisation panel that shows all data flowing around the ide itself

You might enjoy it, i think it’s cool and it’s very very experimental

Thank you! Yes the maze solver has been a very fun experiment with LLMs, and code as policy is a good idea. I’m racking my brain trying to find my next thing to experiment with, but usually the ideas come to me in waves
Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (September 2026) on Sunday September 13, 2026 @10:11PM (#49691037)
I have ALOT of free time since quitting my job.

0) money-money-money: A sub 15Kb server-less opinionated household budgeting tool [0]. Why? Its made to be extremely compressible, so you can edit your household budget and share back and forth with your partner via short-links or QR codes. The idea is you edit your budget, send the link to other party, they can view or edit and send back to you without a server in the loop. [0]

1) slices: An alternative AI-first ADHD-friendly architecture experiment where everything you code is a "slice" with a shared event pool. A slice is a fully self contained "feature". Slices can only communicate with other slices through a shared event pool. Inspired by small-talk, vertical-slice architecture, and ADHD. I used slices to build a self-modifying IDE too. [1] [2]

2) text compression experiments: I'm experimenting with approaches to compress text in pursuit of the Hutter prize. The idea is to take the entirety of the English Wikipedia, and compress the text as small as possible whilst still being able to reproduce it. [3]

3) tiniest maze solving neural network: A write-up work in progress on a maze solver I built with heavy LLM help, managed to get a 14 byte neural network solving 96% of unseen mazes. [4] [5]

I also just quit a job, but on my own terms.

For me, I'm going to spend the next 6 months focusing on:

- Fitness and Eating right

- Baking bread

- Learning Spanish with my partner

- Travelling

- After 1 month, I'll pick up coding again - but for now my brain needs a big break. I have a few parked projects I want to revisit without the slot machine genies help

Just have a break from tech. It will still be here when you get back, look after yourself first. Just have the confidence that you will bounce back when you are ready. Thats what I'm telling myself.

If it doesn't work out, there are other careers, more to the world than computers

Haha yes. Try the readme [0] (the ide itself is best viewed on desktop or laptop, I didn’t design for mobile)

But basically it’s an attempt at an ide for someone with ADHD, instead of holding a whole feature in your brain you can look at 1 “slice” at a time (fully self contained feature)

It has the ability to connect an openrouter or Anthropic api-key to get an agent to modify the editor itself by using the editor itself. A ticketing system like a kanban board, instead of a chat log

[0] - https://github.com/con-dog/slices-demo/blob/main/README.md

Yes actually, on my GitHub account I shared a self modifying IDE (it can brick itself) [0]

You can connect a model via an open router or Anthropic app key, and file tickets for an llm to “go to town” on editing the IDE itself

The entire IDE code is editable (everything) in the IDE itself

[0] - https://con-dog.github.io/slices-demo/

Ideas and execution is basically dead, because any idiot with a keyboard and a spare hour and some api credits can build almost anything you can now.

I myself have built so much shit lately but it all feels incredibly shallow.

I used to get joy from software, now it feels like fast fashion. Even systems engineering and low level code. Fast fashion. Derivative shit, flung at the void.

Thanks for checking it out and I agree 100% with your conclusion - it was an insanely fun engineering problem to work on, but I forgot to make the actual game fun lol.

I know that for my next game! Next one will be fun not interesting :)

Re:Ask HN: What are you working on? (August 2026) on Tuesday August 11, 2026 @01:48AM (#49253826)
Working on this [0]

Trying to make the world’s smallest maze solving neural network. Why? Because it’s fun. Why aren’t you?

Current champion model is 14 bytes - it solves 96.5% of unseen mazes upto 21x21.

Try it yourself on the website. Also a work in progress write up at [1]

Haven’t read Nabokov, but Lovecraft is on the Bradbury end of the spectrum, but I love Lovecraft lol
Re:There Will Come Soft Rains [pdf] on Monday August 03, 2026 @10:28PM (#49163763)
Try some Arthur C Clarke, less doom and gloom
Re:There Will Come Soft Rains [pdf] on Monday August 03, 2026 @10:20PM (#49163718)
My friend, we exist at opposite ends of a spectrum ha
Re:There Will Come Soft Rains [pdf] on Monday August 03, 2026 @10:12PM (#49163668)
Ray Bradbury has some great ideas, but I hate his writing style. It’s far too flowery, he’s on a spectrum that contains Hemingway at one extreme, and Bradbury near the other.

I prefer Hemingway. Writing style at least.

How about a blog that contains its entire source code inline in the blog itself? [0]

Such that copy pasting its contents reconstructs the blog byte for byte
