Re:CSS-Tricks has a new owner

I shared your sentiment maybe a year+ ago when it comes to css, and I do think it's one of the areas AI in general struggles with (where art and code meet), but it's a lot better today with the latest OpenAI and Anthropic models as someone that works on design systems for a living (for now). It follows stylistic patterns, it can inspect the issue in the browser and have a better understanding of CSS upstream effects than it used to (it used to suck at this and paint itself into a corner over and over like some game of whack-a-mole), and can even tackle things using latest interop features.
It does make really silly mistakes now and then, like using fallback css variables in the wrong order, but they are fewer and farther in between.

There's just less reason today for someone like me that liked the utilitarian benefits of a jailbroken iPhone. I used it for gestures, caller mini preview, grouped notifications, etc. All things that are now baked in.

I think todays latest models would satisfy most users, so it makes me wonder how soon until we can run it on our machines without having to subscribe and with China handing us freebies? I think they have dug well past the point of profitable returns before that happens, so I can see why big tech companies are scrambling to get into bed with US government more than ever as a backup plan when/if their big gamble fails. And now our corrupt government and its 3 letter agencies, they have bargaining power to use this tech and relax privacy efforts and add more backdoors for "safety and security" whereas in the past it was easier for these companies to say no. A match made in hell that we are all roped into now.

Hmm, does it ingest the knowledge base as part of its planning? I feel like AI often starts with the picture and works backwards, or goes room by room which kinda ends up Frankenstein-like. I wonder if one of the secrets to yours would be to grab the entire knowledge base, top Figma articles and those "10 things I wish I knew" for the edge cases, and have it iterate on a plan, kinda like someone creating a browser based on the test cases in the sense of building more holistically and realistically to how users would interact with it.

I find AI as a good baseline for how 80% of users would approach something. The negative space or that 20% is where it often becomes blurry and contradictory for AI. That's where your expertise in the industry in whatever you're building comes into play, and where you steer the design and functionality from painting yourself into the same corner millions of others vibe-slopped themselves into.

Yeah, I think that kind of view was more prevalent in the 90's and early 2000's, where media fed you with the most diehard of the disciplines, seeing a bone thin marathoner or a roided up weightlifter, and you're just like eh I 'm good with looking like me. It was often a looks thing or pushing your body to the absolute limits, or following some vhs or dvd program to get buff. But then we kept getting paper after paper about how it was measurably beneficial to your health to have some exercise and that you didn't have to go all in on these things to benefit; some of it you can do as you work.

Welp, I guess I should check that out, thank you.
Didn't you guys have to handwrite your code during exams, at least the basic programming classes? I feel like that's an immediate reason you need to know how to code.

Isn't this technically illegal to reverse engineer and share? It's awesome but I feel like it'll hasten big companies to lobby and make some harsh laws around this type of thing. I'm surprised Claude/Fable allows this? Or do we trick them to do it?

This is great... one thing I wish is to be able to exclude are lines, for instance some lines in my config that only benefits the work I do. Some configs don't allow extending and that's where this would come in handy. Anyone have any tricks for that?

What's it matter if I solved the problems then complained about it after? The bottom line is the battery life is garbage and not including a pedometer as a complication is silly.
Re:Apple Watch Ultra 4

No, I'm not opposed. I got my watch like 2 months ago and haven't really messed with it since. Just baffled that the option doesn't exist. Which app do you use for that and does it affect battery life?
Re:Apple Watch Ultra 4

I bought an Apple Watch recently so I can enter my workplace without much hassle (first world problems). Highly disappointing watch coming from a no-name Amazfit brand. I like my step counter, I don't care whether it's slightly off, I want to see it on my watch face - you'd safely assume it was possible, but no! So now I have to go through multiple menus and swipes to see it and it doesn't even show right away (takes several seconds at times). Don't get me started with the joke that is the battery life.
Apple Watch is probably Apple's shittiest product today.

For us we went with CSS modules, it just made more sense for us to stay closer to web fundamentals since our styles are used across different tech stacks. From my experience in the last year, AI is quite good at sticking to your css ground rules and gleaning css patterns from other files all while being underpinned by design tokens (can have linters raise raw values to question also). Gotta use whatever works best for the job!

I mean, Amazon just sucks in general when it comes to design. I don't understand why Amazon videos (or whatever their purchased streaming app is) doesn't even queue up sequential movies automatically. It'll play the first Harry Potter movie, then skip to the third, fourth, and then the second, etc. It's not just HP , either.
Re:Does whispering to agents in docs help?
on Friday August 21, 2026 @03:29PM (#49392811)
Not sure, but if shared in the same docs as what we would read, it also allows us to skip over it with the assumption that it's a special set of instructions for AI.
Re:Why some people mow a lawn better than others
on Tuesday August 04, 2026 @03:33PM (#49173791)
Yeah, I think most people who have a yard wouldn't have played it for fewest moves... I don't know why but this whole piece reminds me of someone that never had to mow their yard, or AI that optimizes for something without carrying the full context or nuance of why we might not have gone with fewest moves optimization.

I think the people that go into this field today (and for a while now) probably do it for the love of it, not the pay or widespread fame of doing something extraordinary in the field. Not that you can't have it all, but not being some legend I, well, I think that's a strange reason for someone already interested in game dev not to step into the field?
