Aren't they in bankruptcy? They have a treasure trove of data and an unenforceable promise not to sell it.
Try the quotation dash (U+2015), sometimes called the horizontal bar. Unlike the em-dash (U+2014) it hasn't been hijacked by AI.

Half the time the communities were helpful, half the time they were hostile.
Re:StackOverflow now gets fewer than 1000 questions a month on Thursday October 29, 2026 @03:23AM (#50285522)
The communities were helpful half the time and hostile the other half.
Well, someone's got to.

Where in Florida? It makes a difference.
Where in the UCC does it say that? There may be a State regulation or a company policy, but I don't recall anything in the UCC about a "free" 14 day return policy. I can return a used car, no questions asked, after 14 days? Good luck with that.
While they're at it, they can bad other medical devices that assist the vision-impaired, but why stop there? Canes and wheelchairs should also be banned. Government buildings are only for the sighted and physically fit.

Several years ago, a German company whose name rhymes with "rowdy" sought permission from a Middle Eastern government to collect location and other information (e.g., speed) from its sold automobiles. The government asked them what they wanted to do with the information. They dithered and dawdled and failed to come up with an answer beyond "improved consumer experience." They failed to mention thay planned to sell the collected information to third-parties.

You might use such a device if you were vision-impaired and it helped you see.
Re:iPhone Duo on Thursday September 10, 2026 @08:30AM (#49642673)
As a medical device for the vision impaired, AVP has a built-in audience that is used to paying top dollar, especially if paying means just a co-pay. It also eliminates popular disquiet about improper recording--no one will complain about a device that helps the vision impaired get around. Why neither Apple nor Meta went down this path is inexplicable.

Not so fast...typos are now proof the content wasn't AI generated. AI doesn't make typographical mistakes except when languages are mixed.
Re:Unified Arabic on Monday September 07, 2026 @12:24PM (#49600061)
Those same teens came up with Arabizi so they could text. It consists of the Roman alphabet plus the numbers 3,5,7 and 9. It's written left to right and was created for texting on feature phones. Everyone can read it in any Arabic-speaking country. Given that so little is published in Arabic, a change to this grassroots script is long overdue.

There's an Arabic version of pinyin called Arabizi which consists of the Roman alphabet plus the numbers 3,5,7 and 9. It's written left to right and was created for texting on feature phones. Everyone can read it in any Arabic-speaking country. Given that so little is published in Arabic, a change to this grassroots script is long overdue.

Re:The Decline of America's Public Pools on Sunday August 23, 2026 @12:23AM (#49406048)
Who remembers the Arlington Heights Park District's successful "Zap the Gap (between people and pools)" campaign?
Let's congratulate these young entrepreneurs for their implementation of a complete, albeit irregular, supply chain under difficult circumstances to safely meet a need for their fellow classmates.

Drug deals consist of three elements: price, quality and terms of delivery. The last is where violence most often erupts. By eliminating dark web-based delivery, the authorities re-introduced in-person distribution which is inherently unsafe. Cloaking sales points with the cover of university-approved fraternities tends to eliminate the presence of strangers, pain in the ass innocent bystanders and possible informants.

In legal writing, an inline footnote begins with the word "see" in italics, e.g.,"football-related prayer in public schools is now permitted, see,Kennedy v. Bremerton School Dist., 597 U.S.507 (2022)." It's just as easy to make this a footnote but some judges have objected to "excessive" footnotes in legal submissions. Keeping them inline avoids this criticism.

ps On another note, AI legal hallucinations are a solved computing problem. Either a cite or case is contained in the closed universe of materials or it isn't--a simple binary question. Problem is, thos with control of the materials, starting with 1 Dallas (which predates the United States) won't share the list with AI companies.

pps This forum deletes unicode. The word see was gobbled from the original text.

Now having a revival because AI killed the em dash.
Payment of any bill, any online purchase usually requires 2FA and a phone. No phone? No online bill payment or online purchases. Were it not so...

Re:The AI Slop Backlash Is Having an Impact on Monday August 10, 2026 @09:56AM (#49243732)
And yet, book publishers have offered --in one instance--2.3 million USD for an AI written text. Those aren't em dahses but the mis-spelling was deliberate to show this coment was not generated by AI.
I would wager that many people are eager to read George R.R. Martin's latest were he unable to finish it. Stieg Larsson's Lisbeth Salander has featured in works written by others after his death. Why not AI?
Some people read for pleasure.
Wuddabout:

Works unfinished at the time of the author's death?

Abandoned works?

Lost works? Prompt: Aristotle's work on comedy has been lost. Write a short treatise on comedy, using Aristotle's methods as shown in his Corpus and especially his treatises on Rhetoric and Poetics.

The story is: they find the guy, call him and he doesn't talk. All they've discovered is that he, like many in the Assad regime, are now in Russia. Duh. This is a non-story.
Re:The Lost Civic Life of Movie Rental Stores on Thursday July 30, 2026 @12:48PM (#49112534)
Expensive motel rooms, a lack of housing and not renting rooms to teenagers or college students might have something to do with the continued longevity of this business. And don't forget that on weekends they become flea markets.
