How would any of this information affect investors adversely? What she revealed is that they actually are doing what is in the best interest of the shareholders. The users are not the investors. She just revealed what we all already know and what FB has known all along…that high engagement doesn’t mean the content is worth sharing at scale in all cases, and deciding whether that line is, is often very difficult and technology/rules need to catch up to solve that problem.
Facebook is actually quite open to internal debate on these issues all the time. They want open dialogue from many diverse sets of backgrounds and opinions. Which is why just screen capturing people’s dissent internally is not some gotcha moment where FB is somehow squashing the existence of problems or people disagreeing with the current direction. It’s something that happens literally every day and they work out the best way forward or whether someone independent needs to make a decision for them.
Well that certainly changes our perception of her motivations. She claims to care about making social media better but probably just wants an easy payout.
Sorry but nothing she shared is incriminating. It’s just the challenges internally that Facebook has to deal with given their scale and how much content is shared every second. She makes a false choice that somehow Facebook can 100% make it safe but they just choose not to. It doesn’t matter who regulates it, who is in charge, the technology aspect of figuring out what is “dangerous” content and what isn’t is still impossible. Facebook has far more internal discussions and open debates about how to solve this problem than any other company. They are right. They are the best at this but they are still failing in many ways. But it doesn’t mean they aren’t trying and that they haven’t made progress.
