My team has been desperately searching for something like this. We actually started the effort to build our own, and were well into the prototyping phase. You may see some contributions from us in the future.

This is actually one of the root causes. It would be SO MUCH EASIER, for me, an app developer, if every linux user used centos, or ubuntu, or mint, or whatever the hell. Don't care, pick one. But, customizing is part of the fun... anyways.

Also yeah, desktop Linux is about 10% of users, depending on who you ask. Worse for gamers, although that's just feedback loops.

There's one more thing though, which most people aren't aware of... driver versions. Drivers often ship game-specific hacks for performance fixes. It's an insane, unspoken practice that occurs because some developers will only test heavily on one mfg GPU. Right now, nvidia is taking the brunt of the work because consoles are AMD based.

They made some impressive technical achievements, but their overall platform and infrastructure was awful. For example, no unified friend system, different online services for different consoles, no SSO for games.

I think for casual play like Mario Kart, Pokemon, etc, it worked fine. It absolutely hamstrung more complicated efforts like Smash, Metroid, and third parties were forced to all heavily build out their own infra or not build the feature at all.

These were problems that plagued much more powerful systems (Wii, 3DS - until very late in the lifespan of the console, Wii U, and even the Switch)

effectively, yes. This was a large part of why nintendo's online strategy was so poor for such a long time. The Switch is the first of their products where they specifically asked the younger employees to lay out what it should look like.
