Re:Google Search is now less than half of Alphabet’s revenue on Thursday October 29, 2026 @01:19PM (#50292636)
Android, Inc was 100% a Google acquisition from 2005. I thought this was a well known fact?

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_%28operating_system%29...

Adding `fly.io` to my permanent "never use" list. If they're not going to lawyer up when it comes to the 4th amendment, I will never use this service.

It's so reassuring to know that all a cloud provider needs to compromise its users trust is an official looking letterhead.

Definitely 0% chance they could ever be phished by a foreign (or domestic) power with enough email (or letter) know-how.

At least other big tech companies were forced to kneel with secret (unconstitutional) FISA orders. Both Apple and Google at least try to show that they're pushing back.

EG: google shifted location data to local device only to combat Geo fencing warrants

EG: Apple [requiring warrants](https://apnews.com/article/apple-push-notification-data-cour...) to read push notifications

(why aren't push notifications E2E encrypted in the year-of-our-lord 202X?)

Re:Getting ready to operate GNU Taler in Germany on Thursday October 22, 2026 @07:28PM (#50202519)
It's "money" but it has to be permanently connected to the Internet and it *expires* if disconnected for too long?? This is infinitely worse than Bitcoin.

https://www.taler.net/en/faq.html

> Taler e-money is issued with a validity period. One month before the expiration date, your wallet should automatically exchange any digital cash that is about to expire for new digital cash with an extended validity period. However, if your wallet is offline for an extended period of time, it may be unable to do so. Ensure your wallet is regularly online to avoid losing money due to expiration!

> Honestly Opus 5.5 had gotten good enough I've been considering a project to have it build a new browser based on the open source Chrome and keeps the v2 in place. Just customize it specifically for my preferences and call it done. No more unexpected breaking updates. Just a browser that does its job and nothing else.

Collaboration can happen on a zoom call. We don't need to be in shoddy tuna can meeting rooms.
Re:New gTLD Application for .lan on Thursday October 08, 2026 @12:37PM (#50008039)
Why should I have to purchase something (yearly subscription, mind) in order to access something that is potentially half a meter away?

This is not how anything should work.

Re:New gTLD Application for .lan on Thursday October 08, 2026 @12:23PM (#50007812)
router.home vs router.home.arpa

.home.arpa is so clunky. Why do I have to put the acronym of a US military project in my domain to access resources on my own local network?

Yes, I know that organization was central to the development of the l Internet, but it's not relevant as a domain 40 years later.

Re:New gTLD Application for .lan on Thursday October 08, 2026 @12:15PM (#50007701)
gTLDs were a mistake. I say that as an owner of several domains with gTLDs.

There's almost no value.

Large businesses almost never use them. The potential for scams / phish / etc are now limitless.

Re:The Forgetful CPU (Linux on M4) on Friday October 02, 2026 @08:29PM (#49940257)
I think you might be forgetting where you are. They call it "Hacker News" for a reason.
Re:GPU-time: A small neural model for parsing date and time on Friday September 11, 2026 @02:11PM (#49662792)
Initially it seems like a neat idea. I'm liking that it runs on mobile firefox.

Seems to break with my first query, "after 6" / "after 6pm". It can do "2 to 3". Doesn't seem quite ready?

Re:Be Using Rootless Containers on Thursday September 10, 2026 @12:10AM (#49638303)
Yes, I really don't want to read about American politics when discussing operating systems and technology. It's already shoehorned into so many discussions that it no longer makes any sense.

A blog post talking about security but refusing to mention which operating was vulnerable to an exploit out of virtue signaling(?) is absurdist comedy.

If the author is referring to Omarchy, should we also stop using and mentioning Ruby on Rails? Preposterous.

It's a stretch to compare LLM training/inference to "programming".

Also you're totally missing the point. the parent poster's account (with the gibberish name) was minutes old at the time of my post.

Is this a troll post? Claude is not "programmed" at all.
YAML is a nightmare fuel spec.

In its quest to make markup "human readable", it has created countless footguns.

I honestly prefer XML at this point.

Re: on Sunday August 16, 2026 @09:28AM (#49319873)
So many (disclosed) claude-isms. The subject is interesting, the LLM-"hydrated" text is not.

It feels like work to skim through all the unnecessary em-dashes and actually read the article.

Granted, the article is not long, but I just don't have it in me. I already parse Claude output for my day job and I don't enjoy doing it for my leisure time.

Re:Google News is just Forrest Gump's shrimp boat now on Saturday August 01, 2026 @04:39PM (#49138249)
Maybe because there was nothing to surface besides media panic?

Here's a study you probably won't read because science is somehow political these days. Hint: the numbers are a rounding error given 10MM doses. Myocarditis following COVID‐19 vaccine https://pmc.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/articles/PMC9538893/

Agreed 100%. I don't understand why we have to fear access to knowledge.
Model ablation exists and you can get far enough on commodity hardware with a local model.

Censorship is not the answer.

Incredibly insightful. Not everyone speaks English as a first language. On top of that, the title is not ambiguous.
Re:Sleep research led to a new sleep apnea drug on Saturday May 23, 2026 @11:48AM (#48248664)
Gross.
Re:Sleep research led to a new sleep apnea drug on Saturday May 23, 2026 @01:16AM (#48244931)
You have no idea what you're talking about and it shows by what you choose to type.

It's not exclusively caused by fitness or lack thereof. A cursory Google search would show you this. It's not "breathing at night", it's literally suffocating in your sleep.

This place used to be full of intellectuals. It's a real shame.

Re:Sleep research led to a new sleep apnea drug on Friday May 22, 2026 @10:44PM (#48244071)
Oh you don't say? I'm genuinely curious to know what you reduced your AHI to with these exercises. Or are you just making things up?

Yeah we'll go with fabrications based solely on this sentence "But things like this aren’t necessarily profitable or worth a doctor’s time, so you have to do them yourself, or see therapists, etc"

Re:Sleep research led to a new sleep apnea drug on Friday May 22, 2026 @10:37PM (#48244020)
What a ridiculous post. Please leave the Reddit pseudoscience at the door.

There are researchers actively working and studying people with sleep apnea. They're not suffering from "forward head posture" or "breathing wrong".

I have severe sleep apnea and no amount of "breathing exercises" are going to cause my soft palate to uncollapse itself while I'm trying to get REM sleep.

Requires an already compromised hypervisor / UEFI. Yawn.
Re:Welcome to Hell Developer on Saturday May 02, 2026 @04:52PM (#47990377)
I found this really hard to read due to the Claude-isms. "Classic" chicken and egg problem? 39 em-dashes, random numbered lists, etc.

If you're not going to even bother to take the time to write an article, why should I waste my time reading it?

Still sounds trivial. Not sure why you're trying to make travel sound like a complex problem that can only be solved by burning tokens.
It is certainly not a "search engine". Perhaps you should do some reading on how LLMs function.
Re:Windows 11 Notepad to support Markdown on Wednesday February 25, 2026 @11:39PM (#47161923)
Wordpad was horrible! Nobody reasonable misses binary encoded .rtf files. They were a nightmare for any other platform other than windows.

What are these horrible takes?

Re:Windows 11 Notepad to support Markdown on Wednesday February 25, 2026 @11:38PM (#47161914)
I can't believe I'm saying this on hackernews of all places... Markdown *is* plain text.
Re:Linux From Scratch ends SysVinit support on Monday February 02, 2026 @01:30PM (#46859426)
I know this is a bit tongue in cheek, but the systemd hate is so old and tiresome at this point.

I need my systems to work. Not once in my career have I experienced a showstopping issue with systemd. I cannot say the same for sysV.
