Re:Mistral raises €3B on Saturday September 12, 2026 @04:55AM (#49670412)
how could I naively think this is going to be the technology to free human from being the slave of work.... of course, it is going to be a weapon, and it is only powerful when no one else has it.
Re:Mistral raises €3B on Tuesday September 08, 2026 @03:20AM (#49606685)
I don't get it when people all claim that AGI is a winner takes all game. It is not (unless it is used as a weapon). When one company reaches AGI, there will be a dozen very close to AGI, given time. Also a winner is not going to drive everyone else out of business, it is the opposite, one winner will have people betting on the second and the third winners, the technology will also help other develops. Once you have a good enough model, everything will be incremental. I think the hardware capability will be the real burden, not the model itself. If AGI is as powerful as it sounds, maybe hardware won't be a problem any more.

I have been on Douyin a lot, there is a lot chat rooms for people to debate politics, so it is a 50/50 divide for opinions (for and against). Many of them will say 'China sucks, and US rules'. People learn a way to speak avoiding keywords, if you are not careful, you get kicked out of the chat. Many of them you can tell are against the government, but these are not ordinary people, they probably don't work, and spending most of their time online talking about politics.

That happened to me, lost 16 years old gmail account, which is my main account for my digital life. It happened after I disabled some tracking, and Google was no longer able to recognize me, even though I had my phone number registered, it was not enough.

Sorry to branch out: How does this one meal per day work for you? There is recommended calories for a person, do you have to follow it somehow to make sure you have enough energy and exercise?
In my case, I think slower model makes it hard to manage context and tasks in parallel. I would much prefer to work in one task only, and finish it, take a break, and work on another task. Currently I have three tabs for three tasks in parallel, it is much worse than because constantly context switching is painful. I think a faster model would mean that you don't have to start a new task while waiting.
Re:DeepSeek V4 Pro beats GPT-5.5 Pro on precision on Monday June 08, 2026 @05:50AM (#48443244)
the extra 5% time you will need to help AI with multiple turns and information it needed. These 5% time reasoning rarely is enough to finish the task. i.e. 5% time AI is just not enough to complete the task without a lot help.
The page says Starbucks, not a random area, random coffee shop. I think it is a valid test. Starbucks is properly staffs, in reasonably busy area, the shop is enclosed.

OpenAI released a privacy filter model https://openai.com/index/introducing-openai-privacy-filter . It is small enough to run locally, I would pass my request through it first before sending to any apis.
Re:I’m joining OpenAI on Monday February 16, 2026 @06:55AM (#47033943)
I don't think he is hired for coding, he is hired for the product. It is not that he is going to join a product team and code, he probably will lead and influence the product, where other software engineers can help to fulfill.
"In the camera+LIDAR case, you conceptually require AND(x.ok for all x) before you accelerate." This can be learnt by the model. Let's assume vision is 100% correct, the model would learn to ignore LIDAR, so the worst case scenario is that LIDAR is extra cost for zero benefit.
Re:Lessons from 14 Years at Google on Monday January 05, 2026 @12:00AM (#46495484)
because the developing world is producing a lot of things except the housing.
Europe is like the US, money is owned by private but they are old money, not new tech billionaires, and does not take the risks as the US. In China, money is owned by the state, and they are willing to take the risks as the US. In this way, I think China is more similar to US than Europe.
I don't agree. I think this comes out of necessity. What else a developing country can do in order to develop itself? Everyone believes they are unique and different, I don't agree.
I think thats misunderstanding. China studied the US and learned from the US, the funding is almost the same way except the state funding has objectives other than returns. US has the best financial system, (well most effective and powerful). There is no way China can do better than the US, what we are seeing is that the objectives are very different.
Why is China not an ally to the US other than the fact that it is a growing economy may be too big for US? What happens if US does not want to contain China any more? Are there fundamental issues which will put China and US as enemies?
IMO, the difference between East and West is money allocation. In west, especially in the US, there are a lot money in the private sector, they will take the risk and fund moonshot projects; in China, the state will (have to) play that role. Yes, 90% of the projects will fail in the portfolio, that's part of the game.

what about its use of being the money of illegal activity, the market value of criminal activities is not a small number, surely it can support bitcoin and other coins.

I wish there is a way for the scam victims to claim some money back. That would be awesome.
China does not have a way to deal with crime in Cambodia. It does not have anti-terrorism law to operate in other countries, also it does not want to upset Cambodia or Myanmar government when not necessary. These Chinese operates in Cambodia are mostly on the wanted list anyway, they don't plan to go back to China. In fact, a person leaving China to Cambodia and Myanmar will be checked and make sure their trip is innocent. Personally I hate these scammers, they have ruined so many people's lives. It seems that it will never go away. Too much money involved. I wish we can launch drone attacks on these places.
I can see that. WingTech bought it for profit, the best way to get the maximum reward is from the stock market. It is actually not rare operation in Chinese companies. But I doubt this is the reason Dutch government would interfere using the national security excuse. There are other ways to handle this, and would be less damaging. I am more inclined to believe that the US's pressure and the current management who wants to use this as a chance to take control of the company.
this theory would contradict with the national security reason used by the government though. I have read in Chinese sources that they plan to remove the European directors, reasons I don't know.
oh no, you are saying China was not a full piece through out the history? That definitely kills the idea of China being a country /s
Re:Qwen3-Omni: Native Omni AI model for text, image and video on Tuesday September 23, 2025 @05:02AM (#45344544)
Is there a AI market for open weights? Companies like Alibaba, Tencent, Meta or Microsoft makes a lot sense. They can build on open weights, and not losing values, potentially beneficial for share prices. The only winner is application and cloud providers, I don't see how they can make money from the weights itself to be honest.
Re:A new theory of China's rise: rule by engineers on Monday September 15, 2025 @09:48AM (#45249723)
we like to simplify things for the ease of understanding. I wish everything can be attributed to one factor, the world would be so simple and easy to understand.

That said, I do have my own understanding on what has contributed to China's rise, and I agree, the engineer aspect has a big play in it: I read the Lean Startup book, while I was reading it, I realize that a lot happened in the country share similarity to startups. Chinese government is very flexible, they do A/B testing with economic policies, pivoting all the time, the measurement, it is so interesting to see how concepts are very similar in both governing and running a startup.

By research you mean web search/deep research or only use knowledge embedded in llm? I use ChatGPT most of time, didn't find Claude work better for me, maybe I should switch if there is a big gap in performance.
Re:Anthropic raises $13B Series F at $183B post-money valuation on Tuesday September 02, 2025 @03:30PM (#45107915)
Also not all compute was necessary for the final model, a large chunk of it is trial and error research. In theory, for $1B you spent training the latest model, a competitor will be able to do it after 6 months with $100M.
