What's the solenoid option used for? Sorry I'm young and don't know any better.
Re:Generative AI Vegetarianism on Monday April 27, 2026 @08:40PM (#47929113)
I like the idea, but it needs a better name. Vegetarianism already means something very specific. Maybe something like Sloppite. Sloppitism. Something like that.

One criticism with your website: It incorrectly assumes I'm not on desktop and hides the download button from me.

Yeap, saw that coming.

Apparently there is a manual release lever, which this driver did not know about. But really, I think it's a bad design to have to think about a second way to open the door. When people panic, they fall back to training, and that training is just opening the door using the handle they always use.

I'm calling it-- 5 years and this will be vaporware. We live in a world where you have to 1) compete with VISA, Mastercard and 2) compete with Bitcoin Lightning Network.

How do you find a property like that? Is there a Zillow for cheap rural land?

Re:Mixxx: GPL DJ Software on Monday January 20, 2025 @04:49PM (#42773457)
I used mixxx to DJ my brother's wedding. I think it was 2013 or 2014. The moment I got the signal to switch to a specific track for the bride's first dance with her Father, mixxx locked up my laptop. Guests were staring at me, one offered a hushed, "they're waiting!" Completely unresponsive, I had to hard reboot my locked up computer and boot back into Ubuntu. Then I opened VLC where I played the tracks for the rest of the evening. Probably not mixxx's fault, but I will never forget that moment.
Federal Express Flight 705 comes to mind, in which a crew member disabled the CVR by pulling it's circuit breaker before attempting to hijack the plane.

Re:Debugging my wife's alarm clock on Sunday October 27, 2024 @02:44AM (#41960345)
I had one of these clocks in the past. I remember the clock working without a battery at all. The battery is only necessary if you want to unplug the clock and move it somewhere else without having to reprogram the time.
Re:Blue whale skeleton at New Bedford museum still oozing oil on Saturday October 19, 2024 @02:52PM (#41889778)
[1] "Typically, when a fresh whale specimen is collected, preparators will attempt to remove as much of this oil as possible. But even then, they cannot get all of it out of the bones."

[2] “The marrow is oily and the oil is a source of energy for these animals. Especially the baleen whales, who typically have a period of the year where they don’t feed,” Robert Rocha, the New Bedford Whaling Museum’s Associate Curator of Science and Research, tells Popular Science. “There’s energy stored in the muscles and in the blubber, but the energy stored in the oil and the bones is a reserve energy source for them.”

[3] "Their bones contain a lot of oil. In life this substance is critical for the animals to maintain buoyancy in water and was the reason why so many were slaughtered during the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. But it can cause major issues when trying to preserve their remains in collections."

Re:A Simple open-source Phone programmable with Arduino on Saturday October 19, 2024 @06:46AM (#41887049)
I owned a Wiphone for about 3 days before deciding it's not for me. I was hoping for something that followed the Unix philosophy of doing one thing well and working well with others. Unfortunately though the included firmware was rather bad at filling the role of a phone. I couldn't get my SIP account to reliably place calls. Sometimes the call would be established and I would hear the other end, but the other end could not hear me. Usually it wouldn't connect at all and there was no error logging to tell me what was going wrong. The Pacman clone was the most enjoyable app.

Re:Hoodmaps: Publicly Annotated City Maps on Thursday September 26, 2024 @12:07PM (#41660087)
The examples you are making are about free speech, not democracy. As in, free speech is people saying things you don't like. And that's a good thing because it means you also get to say things other people don't like.
Re:Hoodmaps: Publicly Annotated City Maps on Thursday September 26, 2024 @12:05PM (#41660056)
Cool, but it was impossible for me to navigate to my city. I entered it by name and the map put it's center at 500 miles south of where I was expecting. Then I couldn't even correct the mistake by scrolling to the city because the map stopped me from scrolling too far away.
