Re:A weed is swallowing the Sonoran Desert on Tuesday May 16, 2023 @06:01AM (#35959667)
Humans have done more for conservation and "repopulating" than you could ever imagine. Soil, sea-life, species...List goes on and on.
We're all lectured to look side-eye at bitcoin while these machine learning processes consume more energy than Las Vegas on meth. LOL.
It's a legitimate question. Why is the mayor of NYC shilling a product? NYC is one of the worlds largest city governments so It's not out of the realm of possibility that this is a native ad for I-Phones.
LOL. I'll see if I can add to this Maoist word salad... We shouldn't just want to "step in the right direction" we should make a great leap forward. We should have a cultural revolution and bombard the headquarters and chill for a while... Maybe have a long-march.
Re:Rural Americans are importing tiny Japanese pickup trucks on Thursday April 20, 2023 @09:53PM (#35648944)
Japan doesn't have rural American dirt roads.
Re:Rural Americans are importing tiny Japanese pickup trucks on Thursday April 20, 2023 @09:48PM (#35648913)
My truck has a supercharger and a performance chip. It is a "city dwelling" truck...And I haul thousands of pounds of shit in the city just like I would anywhere else (hence why I have a truck). There's no rule saying trucks have to be for towing bovine.
Re:Rural Americans are importing tiny Japanese pickup trucks on Thursday April 20, 2023 @09:38PM (#35648863)
There's nothing more utilitarian than an extended-cab truck if you're a "divorced dad". You're hauling kids, furniture, trash, tools, etc. And if you need to move cross country guess what...You can tow a trailer. And I'd argue "ego lifting" is buying a 15k carbon fiber bike and riding in a traffic snarling peleton with your euro bike buddies...Everybody's guilty of some form of ego.
Twitter files show that there's a MASSIVE disinformation and censorship industry in the US government. It looks like they use shady NGO's to push government sponsored disinformation and to censor civilians:

That's only garbage if you believe democracy and liberty are garbage.

When a system overheats the CPU can speed up and the clocks drift and if you're producing volumes of events you will get corruption. Wouldn't ever use a system clock... You can write a hybrid logical clock in about forty lines of code that can scale as much as these wildly expensive appliances that these big tech companies shill.
Re:Maps show how parking lots “eat” U.S. cities on Friday March 31, 2023 @10:45PM (#35396531)
> People who want fiscally responsible government?

The Washington D.C metro is a multi-billion dollar money pit from hell that's mismanaged and filled with graft, death and delays. California built a 1 billion dollar bus station that nearly collapsed on itself. In the US, some of the most fiscally un-responsible transportation is public government run transportation.

Like strong arming US companies into putting party shills onto their boards? Disappearing CEO's for months at a time? I'm glad the US doesn't have to resort to CCP corporate facism and thugery. We're all doomed if they do.
Re:Reflections on a Decade of Coding on Saturday March 11, 2023 @10:02PM (#35116008)
LOL. Guy just wants to let his nuts hang after "a decade of coding"...I knew a molecular chemist ex Canadian Air Force pilot that taught himself Russian on a train ride and was a premier Canadian Pathologist out of mcgill that was more humble than this coder.
Nobody is forcing people to buy this garbage and there's plenty of alternatives. My car and no car I will ever buy will have a subscription model. No printer will either.
Re:Gorgeous Photos Capture Life Inside a Drop of Seawater on Thursday January 19, 2023 @05:54PM (#34446791)
Ocean water is lively. A single drop has something like ten million viruses.

https://www.news.ucsb.edu/2011/013097/decade-long-study-reve...

But in the article the photographer said he'd come up empty on some of the dives. So it's fairly spread out.

Re:EPA Proposes to Strengthen Air Quality Standards on Friday January 13, 2023 @10:41PM (#34377192)
LOL. I forgot all about that ozone hole and the mass frog-death (from fungal disease) that they tried blaming on the o-hole. I think before that their was the acid-rain and the "advancing sahara desert". At one point DDT was going to give the entire planet instant cancer... Will be interesting to see what they come up with next.
Re:Cuba and the Geopolitics of Submarine Cables on Friday January 13, 2023 @10:06PM (#34377004)
Owner of starbucks grew up in the projects. I doubt you see that level of mobility in your cuban utopia. And I'm glad that cuba isn't putting gay people into labor camps and forced re-education anymore. Nice.
Re:When did the First Peoples arrive in America? on Saturday December 31, 2022 @05:10PM (#34201279)
Comanche were the stereotype. The memory of the Comanche empire would have been fresh in the minds of Americans (and Mexicans) in the classical hollywood era. Comanche held territory from Kansas all the way to Mexico. They literally destroyed Northern Mexico. Europeans have no idea how intense life was for anybody that had to live in and around that tribe. And this was in the 1870's (not the 1400's).
My suspicion with Japan is that they commit large numbers of their population -- who would be homeless -- into shadowy psychiatric hospitals. Which I think is worse.
Re:Lionel Messi Is Impossible (2014) on Sunday December 18, 2022 @11:07AM (#34038974)
Haven't watched soccer in 20 years. Watched two teams in Europe kick a ball mid field for what felt like four hours.

Thank god for Patrick Mahomes...

Re:Paris Will Become ‘100% Cyclable’ on Saturday October 01, 2022 @11:01AM (#33047100)
Not pedestrians or runners though. Very common for cyclist's to blatantly mow through intersections and crosswalks like psychopaths. In Manhattan there's a famous local that uses a bullhorn to call them assholes. I've nearly gotten clipped by bikes multiple times. Americans also hardly ever use bell's or announce themselves. And then there's the silent killers on the E-Bikes...I think bikes and cyclist paths are good, it's just the US hasn't figured out how to integrate these things into society so you wind up with anti-social tour-de-france cyclists bogarting through children on tricycles and the general public. It's not a good situation.
Re:Paris Will Become ‘100% Cyclable’ on Saturday October 01, 2022 @10:55AM (#33047053)
During the crazy pandemic situation I'd much rather be driving in my own car than chilaxing on a bus with forty random people. Driving has it's place.
Re:Paris Will Become ‘100% Cyclable’ on Saturday October 01, 2022 @10:52AM (#33047022)
I'm guessing by safe he means crime. And Paris has always had crime and I wouldn't want to be one of those tour-de-france dudes cycling through the north-east. LOL
Re:Gen Z never learned to read cursive on Sunday September 18, 2022 @07:08AM (#32886479)
If you're American all of your foundational and historical documents (Bill of Rights) are written in cursive.
Re:A Visual Guide to the Aztec Pantheon on Friday June 17, 2022 @06:56PM (#31785527)
Be lucky you live in 2022. In the 1500's the Aztecs routinely sacrificed children for Tlaloc. And these weren't clean deaths. The children were tortured by the high priests and crowds to induce hysteria and sobbing before having their hearts ripped out of their chests. They were then skinned and the priests would wear the flayed skin for 20 days. And it goes without saying that these kids weren't willing participants.

https://www.mexicolore.co.uk/acrobats/319_1.pdf

There's a reason the Aztec had so many enemies and why the locals embraced a religion where the sacrifice was Jesus.
