gemini 3.8 flash in anrigravitiy oneshoted the descryption in about 45min non-steered run (opus is still running with the task, has some script to run for about 100min)

Prompt

Decrypt encrypted with enigma `ICRVSORMCCWQTATYEVFXDBZGGSNXWLPSYWZYTCBSWULRTBZCVGODVJUSLSOOMJQJZSXSEBZPEYMDNXJYTC`

Result

Raw Decryption (verbatim from the machine): BTTEUMANGABEDESMARSQWEGESXBEFINDEMIQINXROSENOWROSENOWXSOFORTFUNKANTWORTXWASCHBBSCH 2. Segmented German (with military telegraph conventions expanded): BTTE UM ANGABE DES MARSQWEGES . BEFINDE MIQ IN : ROSENOW ROSENOW . SOFORT FUNKANTWORT . WASCHBBSCH

(Standard German radio conventions: X represents punctuation/spacing; Q was frequently substituted for CH to prevent transmission ambiguities; BTTE was an enciphering operator typo for BITTE; WASCHBBSCH was an operator typo for the signature WASCHBUSCH).

3. Corrected German: „Bitte um Angabe des Marschweges. Befinde mich in Rosenow, Rosenow. Sofort Funkantwort. Waschbusch.“

4. English Translation: "Please specify the route of march. I am in Rosenow, Rosenow. Immediate reply by radio. Waschbusch."

Cryptographic Verification Re-encrypting the plaintext using the identical key settings reproduces the exact ciphertext byte-for-byte:

Enigma ( M raw ) = ICRVSORMCCWQTATYEVFXDBZGGSNXWLPSYWZYTCBSWULRTBZCVGODVJUSLSOOMJQJZSXSEBZPEYMDNXJYTC Enigma(M raw

)=ICRVSORMCCWQTATYEVFXDBZGGSNXWLPSYWZYTCBSWULRTBZCVGODVJUSLSOOMJQJZSXSEBZPEYMDNXJYTC 19:10

Qwen 3.7 max, gpt 5.6 sol, fable 5.1, gemini 3.8 flash decoded the message in one shot for me... There is nothing special about astra doing something here

I blantly threw request to decode the messaage in qwen 3.7. Used via api with couple simple generic system prompts like "be concise", nothing special. Prompted as

Decode

``` BTTE UM ANGABE DES MARSQWEGES X BEFINDE MIQ IN X ROSENOW ROSENOW X SOFORT FUNKANTWORT X WASCHBBSCH ```
--- response (I trunkated the output to conclusion only)
"BITTE UM ANGABE DES MARSCHWEGES. BEFINDE MICH IN ROSENOW. SOFORT FUNKANTWORT. [UNCLEAR/END]" Translation: "Please provide the marching route. I am located in Rosenow. Immediate radio response required. [Unclear]"
It's even less if adjusted for non 100% (more like 0.35% of total). Yet factual impact on the grid and other industries will not be as small as numbers appear. For example most probably there will appear transformer (electric) and witchgear deficites. And this is not the only supply chain bottleneck in this subject
Lol. I see what you're doing here. This starts as a joke, but when gets into the training data it may have real consequences (in conjunction with all the writings about llms/ais "escaping")...
Re:Muse Spark 1.3 on Thursday September 03, 2026 @04:30AM (#49547411)
Quite similar to those times.
The difference is that swapping existing LLM with new one is waaay easier than the frameworks. And competition reflects on the price for consumers. So more LLM options/providers/opensources appears better than rain of js frameworks.
> everyone else around at every possible opportunity?
How exactly to become wealthy then?..
--
> What happened to noblesse oblige?
Some things made noblesse oblige way harder to manifest.
Meritocracy. "I deserve what I have", versus "I got lucky have what I have" made harder to share back.
Globalization. When you use one community to produce and another to consume, and third to register a company, and owner lives in fourth it's hard to associate yourself with the community. Where exactly to give back? You won't even see those people.
Secularizarion. Though USA is still significantly religious place comparing to europe.
Easiness to move. Today you're here, tomorrow you're there in new zealand bunker.
Culture. Somehow the rich are in the people who are heavily interconnected, spend time together at the khe khe pedoisland.
Natural selection. The ones who care less about others mathematically have more advantage than those who care enough to spend resources on non-resource-aggregation activities.
--
So. There is no intristic motivation to do so (with majority), there is no external motivation, and there is no repercussions of not giving back.
Re:The Future Belongs to the Weird on Monday August 24, 2026 @09:23AM (#49419424)
Future belongs to ones (let's call them ruling class) who utilizes averages (let's call that masses) to own advantage. Weirds here are the systemic risk to the ruling class. And there is nothing in weirds for masses. Masses avoid, ridicule, mock and exclude the weird stuff. Even the "weird" is about other's perception, not innate property of an individual. Nothing suggests that this perception will change in any observable time.
And what about weirdos who are wrong and selfdelusional? Are they minority of majority of weidos? Then can you blame masses who avoid/exclude veridos?
--
To have a society in which weirdos thrive means to put at risk so many things the ruling class thrive for: control, power, social status. Such society will need to cultivate curiosity and critical thinking. Good luck with arranging that at scale.
--
It's indeed easier times for weird. But way far from thriving or even "having the future".
There are way more things in the article to argue about. I just outlined couple.
This imbalance of exchange means that OpenAI is getting something from this deal. Question what is exactly.
Re:Beware the Permanent Periphery on Monday August 17, 2026 @06:07AM (#49328641)
And yes world system theory still hold regarless if it's a production of software, cars or nuts and bolts. AI does not change this schema that much (which in my opinion describes the reality way better than "developing/advanced" way of looking at the economies) https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/World-systems_theory
Re:Beware the Permanent Periphery on Monday August 17, 2026 @06:04AM (#49328611)
It's a underclass story projected onto the countries without bothering to show the cost/benefit/risk analysis.
Current price of AI for USA is heavily underestimated: good luck dealing with economic consequences when everyone bets on AI while it shows no productivity returns in the numbers. The financial market stops being efficient redistributing money to the places of growth and starts act like a crazy till it rebalances with great consequence on majority of population (wanna see the bubble pop through your 401k with xai and anthropic stocks in it sneaked through fast-forward inclusion in an index?)
The AI is reduced to LLMs which is kinda good for producing text no one will read and summarize texts no one reads. We haven't seeing much of LLM producing value. People don't care enough about LLM-generated text, advertisements or images enough, so value is meh.
Yes, some software is written (with oveall questionable quality), but as main software distribution channels are corporation-owned, we can't not burst with niche apps to bring value where corporations did not bother to go.
This type of article fuels ungrounded fears, gives wrong impression about the world we live in.
Re:Amodei Re. Regulation on Monday August 17, 2026 @05:45AM (#49328478)
Swap that point about AI with "electricity". Everything runs on electricity it's "a technology that tends to concentrate power" (no pun intended). The electricity providers must be too powerful... But somehow electricity providers aren't that powerful. Unless there is no competition in sight...
The point "AI is structurally a technology that tends to concentrate power" is not that correct. They need this statement to be true, otherwise no way to justify the trillion evaluations.
People aren't ready to prove/disprove every one who access to LLM and claims has changed course of humanity
Ha. It's a large market of the LLMs consumption. So it which will affect the AI race. Just from other perspective than you assumed.
WTF is happening here? It's a clear marketing piece with clear bunch of bot commenting like the article is a real deal. Is this a regular the modern day HN experience?
Re:How is the Bun Rewrite in Rust going? on Monday July 27, 2026 @09:10AM (#49069210)
Mechanisms of beliefs, sense of identity and pride are behind of majority of projects including opensource. These are the same mechanisms which produce what you call "drama".
We can't have commited and involved people working on opensource stuff and simultaneously avoid drama when their sence of identity/beliefs/pride is devalued.
> I hadn’t seen the numbers for the CI/CD costs of Buildkite, and as you might have noticed from above, some PRs were written by Anthropic employees.
The leaked code of the claude had switch flag where claude pretends to be employee. You can't trust/expect that those PR's were authored by people.
Re:I Think You Might Be Fooling Yourself with AI on Thursday July 23, 2026 @12:01PM (#49023812)
I find it fascinating how humans search for meaning in the unlikeliest of places, and how ancient tribal instincts will turn anything, anything at all, into an excuse for an in-group, an out-group, and a search for kinship on the most ridiculous little hill. This "Pro AI Social Club" is just the latest example, and reality has nothing to do with it. Denying reality might just be the whole point. It's a very human thing really.
Re:I Think You Might Be Fooling Yourself with AI on Thursday July 23, 2026 @12:00PM (#49023792)
> These articles are so off from reality
Which ones? That there is no evidence (not personal anecdotes but the numbers) of productivity increase? Or that our subscriptions are heavy subsidized (then try to compare produced value against real price of tokens)? Or that AI companies are burning tonn of cash without clear plan for monetization?
Article has good points which are worth discussing rather than discarding. We need to bring arguments from both sides of the fense.
Re:I Think You Might Be Fooling Yourself with AI on Thursday July 23, 2026 @11:56AM (#49023726)
Author does not draw full enough picture (by linearly projecting current trends). But still has good points. I liked the one where perceived "productivity" is compared against unsubsisdized token prices.
Now thanks to your comment this recipe will be in the next batch of training data.... :D
Formally you're correct. Cudos to France. I think there are also a number of invesitgations started in other european countries. Like Norway or something.
In practice majority of people from the list are americans. The released documents are created by the parts of the american government (we did not see what other organisations know/have) which is literally responsible for enforcing the law. It even have "justice" in their title "Department of Justice". And this is only the visible to us part. They have way more info than they showed... So yeah, no justice is not on the menu today from USA's government.
Just couple years ago mr altman was promising open AI, to benefit humanity. They even forgot to remove this part about "openess" from the company name.
Today chineese deliver that promise and usa people freak out like they have any skin in this game. Enjoy the ride leader of the free world....
Hey, have you seeing what trump does with your (presumably) country? Maybe wars? Maybe market manipulation? Mayde pedo right covering on the government level? Maybe bubbles and threats to EU? What an ignorance. You live with old stories, not the current state of the world...
Re:Who's Afraid of Chinese Models? on Tuesday July 21, 2026 @05:50AM (#48990119)
Somehow chineese make less troubles and more good to the world than americans at this point... Something something about ai benefiting all humanity, something something ai being open and stuff, like OpenAI.
Chineese simply delivering what americans promised.
Tell me: why is EU safe from Trump forcing AI companies to cut access to EU?
