Re:Which hobby do you think is most diverting and pleasurable? on Saturday October 31, 2026 @05:03PM (#50320207)
I love a good quotation, and when I come across one I will often write it up in my own rudimentary and imperfect calligraphy, usually on a 4x6" card. I enjoy creating the cards, and actually end up flipping through them pretty often. On the back of a card I will write the date, along with some notes about how I came by the quote and what seemed compelling to me about it when I wrote it up.
Did Augustus live before Isaiah 9:6-7 was written?
It's forward-looking brown nosing.
It really is amusing the extent to which progressive ideologues will attribute injustice/harm/transgression to inanimate objects and processes. Last year the Altadena fire consumed more houses belonging to people of color, so it was deemed racist. If it is found that female polevaulters suffer more per capita injuries than male, gravity itself will be declared sexist.

I'm from California, but I appreciate the love!
I had always read that acetaminophen/Tylenol was the gold standard for fever reduction, so this result (ibuprofen/Advil marginally better than acetaminophen/Tylenol) is mildly surprising to me.
Chaque à son goût.
Call it a dumb post if you like, but I've never used AI to write for me.
Some people's brains semi turn off when they speak in front of a crowd. I would say that there was some hubris involved -- not on her part but on Trump's. Ten hours of training probably would have made all the difference. There is perhaps an unconscious sense that exceptionally attractive people are also exceptional in their skills.

Maybe the Marin French Cheese Company in Petaluma could help them out if it comes to that.

I guess what I like about Camembert (relative to Brie) is its saltiness.
Re:AI Reflections of a New Grad Engineer on Monday October 12, 2026 @03:46PM (#50061948)
A thoughtful, well-spoken young engineer. She does a good job of sharing what it feels like to be the human-in-the-loop of an AI system.

Me? I'd love to travel to the home of Camembert, even though I've never been to France. A pretty mundane life goal. But it brings joy to my heart knowing people like this exist.
Can't we all just get along?
Re:The AI industry is booming. Women are getting left behind on Sunday October 04, 2026 @05:19PM (#49958002)
This is really a meaningless distinction. It would speak more strongly to equity to point out that people from South Dakota are being left behind or that people who attended under-performing elementary schools are being left behind.
This is like lamenting (if it were the case) that Johnson & Johnson is facing a shortfall in its bandage business because men aren't battering their wives and girlfriends as much as they did before.
Re:The Paradox of Free Time on Wednesday September 30, 2026 @10:02PM (#49916799)
It is related to one of the seven deadly sins: sloth. But the English word that transliterates the original Greek word is acedia.

My dad used to like to tell the story of how, when he was a boy in the 1930s, shoe stores would measure your foot with an X-ray machine!
Re:The Book Your Tech Boss Doesn't Want You to Read on Tuesday September 29, 2026 @03:07PM (#49898768)
This book has received the imprimatur of Mayor Mamdani.
The question is not why -- which is trivial -- but how.
I don't see how to access the search function. All I see are example videos.
yeah
I like it: a philosophical take.

What I would say is: "I assume that people who don't put the same value on the principle of self-sufficiency that I do would support a scheme to allow people of lesser means to buy groceries on the open market at a lower price than is permitted to me."

This is great news, but a bit surprising. I think, truth be told, the socialist left would like nothing better than to have surveillance pricing, so long as it is deployed in the aid of poor people. And of course the designation "surveillance pricing" would have to go. Something like "equity pricing" would have a much better ring to it.
Is AI going to put smokejumpers out of business?
Donald Trump would like to see Ireland reunited. I can't tell from this article if Northern Ireland wants reunification or simply wants to be severed from the UK.
Re:Grigori Perelman on Saturday September 12, 2026 @09:55AM (#49672351)
A fascinating and brilliant man! I personally would say, however, that he suffers from an overly scrupulous conscience. He should allow himself to be an advocate for himself rather than taking on the role of arbiter of what is fair in the world of mathematics.
Re:André Weil and the Hodge Conjecture on Saturday September 12, 2026 @09:41AM (#49672232)
Two factoids of interest:

1. André was the older brother of philosopher Simone Weil.

2. "Weil" is a jumbled version of "Levi" adopted by some so as to be less conspicuously Jewish, and thus be less likely to be persecuted or discriminated against.

Nobody can make you feel conservative without your consent.

If you are a tinkerer you will be impressed by the video.
